The Life and Miracles of Saint Irene the Great Martyr. Irene lived around AD 315 in Magedon, Persia. She was the only daughter of Licinius, the ruler of that region.
Her name was Penelope. Because she was very beautiful, her father wanted to protect her. He placed her in a tower with precious vessels, furniture adorned with gold, and magnificent rooms, all decorated with precious stones. She was six years old and was taught by an elderly tutor.
Her father appointed an elderly tutor named Apelianus to educate her according to the customs of the time. As Irene grew up in their tower, her curiosity about the world outside grew too.
She ran to Apelianus for an explanation. Timothy came, began teaching her the Christian faith, and then baptized her. He left her the Gospel and other sacred books and departed, guided by an angel. Afterward, Irene pulled down and smashed her father’s idols in her tower. Her father was enraged by her actions. After she was questioned and he learned that his daughter remained steadfast in her faith in Christ, he ordered her to be bound and trampled by animals. But the animals stood still.
One of them, instead of harming the Saint, turned on her father. It knocked him to the ground, broke his right arm, and trampled him to death. No one could help him.
They begged her to forgive them and her father for the torments they had inflicted on her. They were ready to believe in Jesus Christ and in what she preached.
She prayed and raised her father from the dead. He immediately believed in Christ, and his wife believed with him.
Through her teaching, she brought people to faith in Christ. After this, the Saint came to Callinicum, where Numerianus was ruler. She appeared before him and confessed her faith in Christ.
The third bronze bull, though lifeless, strangely walked a little, then split open, and Irene emerged unharmed. Numerianus grew very angry and took his own life. Before dying, he ordered the prefect to punish Irene with various tortures. The prefect had her bound with chains and a fire lit beneath her. But an angel of the Lord descended, extinguished the fire, and kept Irene unharmed. Seeing this, the prefect and his household believed in Christ. News of the Saint’s miracles quickly spread beyond the local area and throughout the kingdom.
Everyone spoke with wonder of the Saint and the divine power at work through her. In AD 330, during the reign of Constantine the Great, Satorios, the king of Persia, ordered Irene beheaded. She was beheaded and buried, but within three days an angel of God restored her to life. The angel blessed her for bearing witness to Christ’s teaching, as well as those who believed in Christ through her and those who would commemorate her on the day of her martyrdom. Many Ephesians believed in God after seeing with their own eyes. Irene met her teacher Apelianus. After teaching the Ephesians, she took him with her. He followed her everywhere and recorded her life and miracles. Together they left Ephesus.
After two days, Apelianus went to the tomb. The account then turns to a hymn addressed to Irene: “You longed for Christ your Bridegroom, O Irene, worthy of all praise.”
