Saint Anna, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos (God-bearer), came from a distinguished priestly family. Her father was a priest named Marthan, and her mother was named Maria. We know very little about Saint Anna’s early life. As the priest’s daughter grew, she developed spiritually and was radiant in outward beauty as well.
Her beauty was so striking that girls her own age, though they dressed up and wore makeup and did everything they could to attract young men, could not rival her. We are told that the virtuous, God-fearing Anna married Joachim. The couple lived in Galilee with deep faith in God and devotion to His divine law.
Only one thing cast a shadow over their happiness and troubled their thoughts: they had no child to love. Childlessness was regarded as a cause for contempt and shame before God and other people.
The shame and stigma were so great that no one would share bread with someone who had no child. One day, during a great Jewish feast, Joachim and Anna were among the first to go to the Temple. Devoted to their faith and filled with love for God, they made their offering before everyone else, unaware of the custom. They were told, “Wait. Since you have no children, under the custom of the law you must make your offering last. Those who have children always go first, and those without children go last. Do you have no fear of God? You came and made your offering first.”
“How dare you show contempt for the law of Moses? Get out of here quickly, for God will burn you! Leave the Temple immediately, so that God’s wrath does not fall upon you!” Joachim and Anna were deeply hurt by the many harsh and humiliating words they heard from the Temple priest. After the priest’s insult, they left the Temple embittered.
They walked on in silence, with tears in their eyes. Joachim said to Anna, “I cannot bear to return home. I do not want to live like this for even one more day. I feel that together we are under the wrath of God and of other people.”
“My dear, go back to our home. Give alms as much as you can, and then withdraw to our garden. I must go into the mountains. There I will fast and beg God either to give us a child or to let the wild beasts tear me apart.”
They said goodbye. Joachim set out for the mountains, while Anna went home. Following her husband’s words, she entered the garden and prayed to God: “If You give me a child, I will dedicate that child to You, Lord.” Saint Anna’s prayer is a model of prayer. These were the words the all-good God heard when He looked with mercy upon her.
“Lord, mighty and all-powerful, with a single word You created heaven and earth and all we see around us. You freed our ancestors from Pharaoh’s hands. You, all-good One, at whose command the sea split in two and the Egyptians fell into it, fed our ancestors for forty years in the wilderness. You blessed Sarah, Abraham’s wife, to give birth to Isaac in her old age.”
“You blessed Hannah, who bore the prophet Samuel. Almighty One, grant me, Your humble servant, the joy of having a child too. Do not leave me childless and shamed before everyone. You blessed Your creatures, saying, ‘Increase and multiply.’ Grant me offspring, the fruit of my womb. I vow that if I give birth, I will gladly give the child to You and bring the child to Your Temple.” This was Saint Anna’s long prayer. Weeping, she asked forgiveness for every sin she thought she had committed. At the same time, Saint Joachim was in the mountains, kneeling and fasting. He too wept and begged God to grant them a child. God soon sent the Archangel Gabriel to the mountain where Saint Joachim was. The Archangel stood before the kneeling, tearful Saint and said, “Rejoice, Joachim, and be glad. I am the Archangel Gabriel, and I have come to bring you joy.”
“I bring joyful news: your wife Anna will give birth to a daughter. That daughter, while still a virgin, will give birth to the King of the world and our God. So set aside your sorrow and the bitterness in your soul, and return home rejoicing.”
“You need toil and sigh no longer. God has heard your prayer. Go home.” The Archangel Gabriel also appeared to Saint Anna in the garden of her home. For days she had been kneeling there, begging the Lord to grant her the joy of bearing a child.
A heavenly being stood before her. The Archangel Gabriel said, “Anna, the Lord your God has heard your prayer. You will conceive and give birth, and your child will be known to the ends of the earth.”
Saint Anna was startled by the Archangel’s arrival. She said, “Whether the child is a boy or a girl, I will offer the child as a gift to the Lord my God, to serve Him all the days of the child’s life.” After this, Saint Joachim returned home rejoicing.
There he found his wife, Saint Anna, who was also filled with joy because of the Archangel Gabriel’s words. That night Saint Anna conceived the Lady, the Theotokos, through Joachim’s seed, for Christ alone was born without the seed of a man.
Now she felt the joy of motherhood she had longed for so deeply. The day Joachim and Anna’s daughter was born was a day of joy and thanksgiving to the almighty and all-good God.
This devout family—Saint Anna, Saint Joachim, and their little daughter—spent many days filled with joy and tenderness. At that time, it was customary among the Jews for parents, eight days after a child’s birth, to invite the priests, offer them hospitality, and give the child a name.
So Saints Joachim and Anna invited the priests to name their little daughter. They called her Mariam, which was said to mean “Queen.” Others believe it may also have meant “gift” or “hope.” She is called Panagia, the All-Holy, to this day because she was the holiest of women, incorrupt and undefiled.
Each of the five letters of her name is also said to point to a woman in the Old Testament who was distinguished by at least one virtue. Her parents cared for her young soul and adorned it with the beautiful ornaments of virtue, such as self-control.
For three years, her devout parents rejoiced in their lovely little daughter, keeping her close and singing hymns of thanksgiving to God. When those three years had passed, they remembered the vow they had made to Him.
They had vowed that, if they had a child, they would dedicate the child entirely to the Temple. Saints Joachim and Anna called upon Zechariah, who, with his wife Elizabeth, had also been praying to the Lord for a child.
When the prophet Zechariah saw the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy), he recognized her at once. He paused and praised her. Then he turned to her parents and said, “Blessed husband and wife, rejoice and be glad, for you have been counted worthy to become the parents of such a daughter.”
“You have surpassed your ancestors and ours. You have brought into the world the Queen of the world. For this, God and all people will honor you.” Hearing the high priest’s words, Saint Anna said to him, “Take my little daughter, high priest—or rather, God’s daughter. Receive her, pure and spotless, higher than the heavens, and dedicate her to the Temple, for this is the vow we have made.”
Place her inside the temple, for that is where she is worthy to dwell. She is holy; place her in an undefiled place, in the hands of God. The prophet Zechariah took her, as her parents had vowed, and led her to the place where Aaron’s rod, the golden censer, and the tablets inscribed with the Law were kept.
There in the Temple, where the prophet Zechariah served as high priest, little Mariam, the purest soul since the beginning of the world, would remain for twelve years. Through fasting, vigils, prayer, and obedience, she would become holier even than the Holy of Holies, the new Ark who would bear within her the Word (Logos) of God.
At nine years old, little Mariam would know the sorrow of being orphaned, losing both her beloved parents. So when the time came for her to leave the Temple at fifteen and go out into the world, the Temple priests and her relatives decided to protect her from life’s dangers rather than leave her on her own.
After Saint Anna gave birth to Mary the Theotokos (God-bearer), she weaned her and dedicated her to the Temple as a pure and spotless gift.
She spent her life fasting, praying, and giving alms to the poor. At last, she peacefully entrusted her holy soul into the hands of the Lord. Tradition says that when Saint Anna fell asleep in the Lord, she was about sixty-nine or seventy years old, and Joachim was about seventy-nine or eighty.
We are not told which of them died first. We are told only that the Theotokos was orphaned of both parents when she was nine years old. The feast of the righteous ancestors of God, Joachim and Anna, is celebrated on September 9.
The Church celebrates Saint Anna’s falling asleep on July 25 with a special service. Emperor Justinian also built a church in her honor in Constantinople in AD 550.
