Today, October 25, our Church commemorates the Holy Martyrs Marcian and Martyrius; Saint Anastasius the Martyr; Saint Valerinus the Martyr; Saint Sabinus the Martyr; the Holy Martyrs Valerius and Chrysaphus; Saint Tabitha, whom the Apostle Peter raised from the dead; Saint Varus the Martyr; Saint George, Bishop of Amastris and composer of Canons; the Holy Martyrs Papias, Diodorus, and Claudian; the Holy Martyrs Faustus, Basil, Lucian, Nicephorus, and Stephen; Saints Philadelphus and Polycarp; Saint Macarius, Bishop of Paphos in Cyprus; and the two Holy Martyrs of Thrace.
The martyrs Marcian and Martyrius lived in the fourth century after Christ, during the reign of Emperor Constantius, the son and successor of Constantine the Great. Deceived by the Arians, Constantius embraced their heresy and used every power at his command against those who defended and followed the Orthodox faith. He refused to recognize Patriarch Paul I, the successor of Alexander. More than that, he persecuted Paul and sent him into exile. The saints we commemorate today, Marcian and Martyrius, were Paul’s secretaries. They were steadfast, faithful, and courageous defenders of the truth, of Orthodoxy.
As followers who would not be swayed by the hardships of their times, they remained devoted to Paul I. Wherever they went, they shone with reverence, modest conduct, every other virtue and holiness, and above all with their Orthodoxy. After that holy Paul was exiled to Armenia and suffered a martyr’s death there, hanged by the Arians, these saintly secretaries openly rebuked the impious and proclaimed to everyone that the Son is consubstantial with the Father, of one essence with Him. Neither flattery nor threats of wounds and torture could persuade them to change their minds and betray Orthodoxy. So they were put to death by the sword, and their precious relics
were buried near the gate of Constantinople called Melandysia. Later, John Chrysostom built a church in their honor.
No one had accused the martyr Anastasius. Burning with love for Christ, he went of his own accord to the pagan ruler and astonished everyone by boldly proclaiming Christ to be the true God and Creator of all. His words and his courage made clear that he would not change his conviction. For this he was beheaded, and his body was thrown into the sea. A few days later, a devout woman found the martyr’s precious remains. She wrapped and anointed them, built a church in his honor, and buried them there. Many wondrous healings took place through his relics, and still do.
On this same day, Saint Tabitha, whom the Apostle Peter raised from the dead, peacefully ended her earthly life. Tabitha is a Syriac name rendered in Greek as Dorcas. It belonged to a devout and charitable Christian woman who lived in Joppa. The Apostle and Evangelist Luke praises her, writing that she was “full of good works and acts of charity.” We also learn from the ninth chapter of the Acts of the Apostles that Dorcas organized the making of tunics and coats for widows and orphans. While the Apostle Peter was preaching the Gospel in Palestine,
he reached Lydda, and Dorcas fell ill and died. Her funeral was being prepared when word came that Peter was in Lydda. The news gave hope to those mourning her. Two messengers asked the Apostle to come to Joppa, and he answered their request. When he arrived, they took him upstairs to the room where they had laid her body. All the widows she had helped came to him, weeping for the woman who had cared for them so lovingly. They showed Peter the tunics and coats Tabitha had made while she was alive among them.
The Apostle sent everyone out of the upstairs room where her body lay. Then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, arise.” At his command she came back to life. She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her stand. Then he called the disciples and the widows and presented her to them alive. News of the miracle spread throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. Tabitha lived for many more years, always filled with good works and acts of charity. Death came to her in old age, and she departed to the Lord in peace and joy,
whom she had loved and served in the persons of His brethren.
There are many paths leading to the Kingdom of God. Today we heard three brief accounts from the lives of saints. We saw three paths that led to the same destination. The first, taken by Saints Marcian and Martyrius, was love for Orthodoxy even unto death. The second, taken by Saint Anastasius, was a longing for martyrdom. The third, taken by Saint Tabitha, was love for one’s neighbor expressed through charity. All three reached holiness and salvation. Others became saints as missionaries, as monks in monasteries, as hermits, or as recluses. God does not give everyone the same gifts, or give them in the same measure.
That is why He does not ask everyone to do exactly the same work. The gifts are many and varied. They complement one another, so that each has its place and all serve the Church and our salvation.
So we should not expect everyone to do the same thing. Often, because we place such value on what we ourselves do, we want others to do it too. Nor should we take pride in what we have, for “every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down.” What matters is not what we have,
but how we use it. Saint Symeon the New Theologian says something about this:
Far from it. Some have blessed the solitary life, others the shared life of a monastery, and still others the work of leading people, guiding and teaching them, and governing Churches. But I would not prefer any one of these ways of life, or call one worthy of praise and another worthy of blame. In every circumstance, and in every work and deed, blessed is the life lived for God and according to God: a life lived for His sake and as He wills. And wherever we are, however we live, in the world or in a monastery, with a family or in solitude, if we take care to live according to God and for God,
we can please Christ and receive the Holy Spirit for our holiness and salvation.
