The martyr Saint Hesychios lived in the reign of Emperor Maximian, who ruled from AD 285 to 305. He held a leading position in the imperial palace and senate, with the rank of magister.

When Maximian began persecuting Christians, he ordered that every Christian soldier who refused to renounce Christ be stripped of his belt, the mark of his imperial military rank. Many Christians chose to live without worldly honors rather than lose their souls. Saint Hesychios was among them. Maximian tried to change his mind with advice, promises, and threats.

Then Maximian dismissed him from his post and took away the symbols of his rank. He was publicly humiliated before many officials, who mocked him. When it was over, Maximian expected him to repent of his decision. But even in the shabby clothes meant to disgrace him, Hesychios remained steadfast in his Christian faith. Enraged, Maximian ordered his death. Soldiers led the martyr to the Orontes River, tied a large stone around his neck, and threw him into deep water. Soon the waters closed over his body,

but heaven opened to receive his holy soul. He had shown his faith through two great virtues: contempt for worldly glory and the sacrifice of his life.

The holy hieromartyr Theodotus lived in the early fourth century, during the reign of Licinius. At that time, paganism, facing its end, lashed out like a mortally wounded beast with all the strength it had left, seeking to destroy the Church. Saint Theodotus, bishop of Kyrenia in Cyprus, drew the anger of the governor Sabinus through his great zeal for the Christian faith and his work to spread it among pagans. When he was called on to renounce his faith in Christ, he held firm in his confession. He also spoke to the governor against the error of pagan worship and urged him to renounce its false gods.

They flogged him, hung him up, and tore his flesh. Then they laid him on a red-hot iron bed. By the grace of God, the fire did not harm him. After that, they drove nails into his feet and forced him to walk. Finally, they threw him into prison. After Licinius died, the persecution of Christians ceased, and Saint Theodotus was released. He returned to the Church held in even greater honor, bearing on his body the marks of his living love for Christ. He resumed his care for his flock with greater toil and zeal, making up for what had been neglected during his imprisonment.

His martyrdom and the hardship of prison had weakened his health. Two years after his release, he departed this world to be with the Lord, leaving a blessed memory and a shining example for the clergy and the people.

The virgin martyr Euthalia lived in Sicily with her mother, who was also named Euthalia. Her mother suffered from bleeding and was healed through Saints Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyprinus, whose feast is celebrated on May 10. They appeared to her in a dream and said, “If you believe in Christ and are baptized, you will surely be healed and saved. If you do not believe, go away from us.” When Euthalia awoke, she trusted the words of the holy martyrs. She believed in Christ and was baptized together with her daughter Euthalia.

Euthalia also had a son named Syrmilianus, a fervent pagan. When he learned that his mother and sister had embraced the Christian faith, he flew into a rage. Both women tried in vain to reach him with the truth that gives life and with all their love as mother and sister. They hoped to open his mind and heart to Christian love. Instead, he reacted savagely to their Baptism and demanded that they return to pagan worship. His fury was directed especially at his mother, whom he blamed for his sister’s conversion. When she would not listen, he seized her by the throat and nearly strangled her.

A servant helped his mother escape, and she fled. Then all his rage fell upon his sister. Firm in her faith in Christ, she kept telling him that she could not turn away from the true God, the only Savior of the world. At last he stifled every trace of brotherly love and chose to imitate Cain. He came at his sister with a large knife. Seeing that he meant to kill her, she fell at his feet and begged him not to stain himself with so terrible a crime. She gave no thought to her own death; her only concern was for the man who would kill her. But Syrmilianus would neither hear nor take her words to heart.

He seized the head of his kneeling sister with his hands and slaughtered her. As she died, she prayed that God would show him mercy. In this way, she received the crown of martyrdom.

In the life of the holy virgin martyr Euthalia, whom we celebrate today, we see once again the Lord’s words fulfilled: “Brother will hand over brother to death, and a father his child. Children will rise against their parents and put them to death. And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake.” Such is the devil’s fury against the Lord, His work, and those who follow Christ. He stirs that fury in people who are unprotected by the grace of God. It overcomes even the love between family members and leads to terrible crimes. Within the Church, however, a new relationship appears: spiritual kinship, a bond formed neither by blood nor by nature,

but by the Holy Spirit. It is a bond beyond nature. “And stretching out His hand toward His disciples, He said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.’” Within the Church, our natural bonds and relationships are set right and ultimately surpassed. A person is no longer bound by natural circumstances or confined to the patterns of this present age. By God’s grace, he opens himself to something greater: he becomes a brother of Christ, one with Christ, and through Him a kinsman to all who love Him, and to the Lady Theotokos (God-bearer), and

Thank you. Spiritual kinship is attained through faith put into action: “For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” In this way, a person receives the grace of God. That grace is spiritual blood, giving spiritual, eternal, divine life.
