Saint Crescens, a martyr of Christ, came from Myra in Lycia, Asia Minor, and from a distinguished and proud family. Pagan worship was still flourishing, and the Church was living through persecution. Crescens was advanced in years and needed quiet and peace. But the Christian in him overcame the frailty of age. The flame of faith gave him the strength of youth to enter the struggle. One day he came upon a group of pagans sacrificing to idols. He spoke against the error of worshipping many gods and tried to persuade them of the truth of Christianity. Some listened to him; others rose up against him. Unmoved by the danger, he went on speaking about Christ.
When the governor heard of this, he summoned Crescens and told him he was out of his mind to believe that the one crucified by the Jews was God, and to seek torture and death at his age. Crescens looked at the governor gently and replied that the truth of Christ’s life was shown by the life and triumphs of the Church. For him, even in his old age, torture would be a great joy, because Christians count it a blessing to struggle and suffer for Christ. So the saint was first hung up and torn with instruments of torture. Then a fire was lit, and he was thrown into it. Giving thanks, he surrendered his soul into God’s hands, yet the fire did not touch even a hair of his head. And so
he received the crown of martyrdom.
The holy martyrs Anastasia and Basilissa lived in the time of Emperor Nero, who reigned from AD 54 to 68. Both were from the great city of Rome: women of noble birth, wealthy, and modest in their conduct. They embraced faith in Christ, and through their zeal and generous sharing of their possessions, they became a support and comfort to the Christians of Rome. When Peter and Paul were both present among their Christian community, the two women could hardly express their joy at seeing and hearing these great pioneers and champions of the Church. The foremost Apostles were put to death during Nero’s first persecution of the Christians.
By night, Anastasia and Basilissa took the precious remains of the Apostles and buried them. Before long, they were arrested and charged with belonging to the Christians. They did not deny it. Indeed, they said they were proud of it and prayed that the whole world might become worthy of the life of Christ. Neither threats nor torture could change their minds. They remained firm in their faith even when their hands and tongues were cut off. Finally, they were beheaded, and so, blessed and crowned, they ascended to heaven.
Today we see Saint Crescens, along with the holy women Anastasia and Basilissa, remaining faithful to Christ unto death, dying out of love for Him. On the other side were those who persecuted the Church, the Body of Christ, and Christ Himself. They are still with us today, and it seems they will remain until the end of this age. They hate the Church and seek to destroy her. Yet in the end, they only bring about their own destruction. Century after century, it has been shown that Christ and His Church are the mighty stone on which whoever falls will be broken.
We should also say that Christ and His Church have no enemies who can truly endanger them. Those who oppose them, like the devil, are blind and sick. In showing their sickness, they reveal their need for healing, and how necessary and saving Christ and His Church are.
For her part, the Church has no enemies, only benefactors; and the same is true of every Christian. Saint John Chrysostom tells us that all who fought against the Church failed to shake her. They lost their own strength and were put to shame. As they struck, they fell apart. As they attacked the Church, they grew weak and were overcome by those who suffered at their hands.
The wonder of the Church lies not only in her victory, but also in the way she won it. Though her people were persecuted and cut down in countless ways, they did not diminish; they grew. By their suffering alone, they overcame those who inflicted it. Even while persecuted, the Church loves. She longs and strives for the death of death and the deliverance of suffering humanity. She seeks to give each person what they most deeply desire: to become a citizen of the Kingdom of God, a partaker of divinity, a partaker of love, and a partaker of eternal, blessed life—true life, life itself.
