On November 14, our Church commemorates the Holy Apostle Philip, one of the Twelve Apostles; Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessalonica and Wonderworker; and the Holy New Martyr Constantine of Hydra.
Philip was one of the Lord’s twelve apostles. He came from Bethsaida in Galilee, the hometown of Andrew and Peter. From childhood he devoted himself to studying and learning the Law of Moses, and he kept in his heart all that it said about the coming of Christ. So when Christ the Master found him in Galilee and called him to follow Him, Philip did not delay. Convinced that this was the Messiah they had been awaiting, he followed Him willingly.
Wanting to bring his friends to the Savior as well, he found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses and the prophets wrote about: Jesus, the son of Joseph, from Nazareth.” And so he brought Nathanael to Christ.
Grateful and obedient, Philip stayed close to the Lord and shared in His labors up to the Crucifixion. Then he witnessed the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the descent of the Holy Spirit. Afterward, he was sent to preach in Asia. He eagerly proclaimed Christ and, with Christ’s help, worked many miracles. Many came to believe; he built churches and ordained bishops. With him were the Apostle Bartholomew and Philip’s sister Mariamne. They helped him and shared both his joys and the many trials they suffered at the hands of unbelievers. In Azotus, the Apostle Philip
stayed in the home of a man whose daughter had an eye disease that threatened her sight. The whole household heard the Apostle’s preaching, believed in Christ, and received Holy Baptism. The girl’s father then asked Philip to heal her eye. The Apostle said to her, “Charitine, you yourself will heal your affliction. I grant this power not only to you, but to all who have received Holy Baptism, so that you may work miracles. In the morning, place your right hand over your eye and call upon the name of Christ, and you will be healed.” Charitine did as he said and was healed. From then on, she followed the Apostle.
The Apostle and his companions then went to Hierapolis. There, a ruler named Aristarchus seized Philip by the hair, dragged him about in mockery, and tormented him. So Philip asked God to paralyze that hand, perhaps to correct Aristarchus and to show God’s power.
His words took effect at once. The hand withered, and the ruler was also left deaf and unable to speak. While this was happening, a funeral procession passed by. Those with Aristarchus said mockingly to the Apostle, “If you raise this dead man, we will all worship your God, Aristarchus included.”
After a short prayer, the Saint said to the dead man:
“Christ commands you: rise and say what you wish.” At once the man rose, fell at the Apostle’s feet, and said, “I thank you, Saint of God. At this very moment you saved me from terrible evils. Dark and hideous figures were dragging me away to cast me into destructive Tartarus. They would have done so if you had not come in time to save me, wretched as I am.” Everyone who saw this was frightened and amazed, for Philip knew the stranger’s name and had immediately raised him from the dead. Casting aside every doubt and hesitation, they believed in Christ and confessed Him as the true and almighty God. Aristarchus, too, was completely healed by the sign of the Cross. Then they all received saving Baptism.
Among the first was Prefectus, the father of the man who had been raised. He was one of the city’s leading men. He gave the Apostle twelve golden images of gods to distribute to the poor, and he kept the faith to the end, completing his life in a way pleasing to God. After instructing everyone and strengthening them in the faith, the Apostle ordained a bishop, priests, and deacons for them. He told them to build churches, which he consecrated, blessed them, and departed to preach Christ in other cities.
He came to a large city in Phrygia whose people worshipped a great and fearsome serpent as a god. The Apostle grieved deeply over their error: the devil had so deceived them that they offered human sacrifices to the serpent. Philip approached it, called upon the awesome name of Christ, and killed it at once. Having freed the people from this evil, the Saint taught them about the true God. He baptized those he saw had received the word of faith into their souls, and ordained bishops and priests for them.
Then the time came for Philip to go to his beloved Lord by drinking the soul-saving cup of martyrdom. In Hierapolis, where he found himself, he was denounced to the rulers. They arrested him and tortured him severely in various ways. They beat him with rods.
Then they crucified him. They tied the Apostle Bartholomew by the feet and hung him upside down. Though Mariamne was not harmed in body, her soul suffered with her brother as she watched him being tortured in this way. At that moment almighty God permitted a terrible earthquake. Those present were seized with fear and came to recognize their sin. They approached the Saints in tears and begged their forgiveness. With all their hearts, they repented and confessed Christ as the true God. They took Bartholomew down from where he was hanging. When they wished to remove Philip from the Cross as well, he refused.
Knowing that he would soon go to the One he loved, Philip remained fastened to the cross and taught the people. He urged them to believe wholeheartedly in the true God and keep all His commandments. Then the Apostle prayed for them and departed to the Lord. On November 14, Bartholomew and Mariamne reverently buried his precious and holy relics, glorifying God and honoring His Apostle. They stayed a few more days and strengthened the people of Hierapolis still further in the faith. Then the Holy Apostle Bartholomew appointed Stachys bishop of Hierapolis
and went with Mariamne to other cities and lands, preaching the Gospel of Christ our God and Savior.
In today’s account from the Synaxarion, and throughout the history of the Church, we see many people who had gone astray and fallen into grave sins and idolatry, yet still had an honest and sincere disposition, a sensitivity and an openness to the truth.
God helps such people. We might say He does the impossible to bring them to knowledge of the truth, so they can escape their error, repent, and be saved. It is very important for us to keep this sensitivity, so that we can recognize, receive, and act on the messages God sends us. If we turn away from every kind of wickedness and remain simple and receptive, God can readily correct us. Let us ask God for this sensitivity, and let us take care to preserve it. I think it is most endangered by disregard. When God sends us a message, we may pretend we do not understand. We push aside and silence that inner voice, the quiet voice of conscience, and do as we please. When we do this repeatedly, our hearts harden, and we can no longer respond to God readily. We may become completely estranged from Him, or the message we need may have to come in a much stronger way.
And those strong messages are often painful. “Do not delay in turning to the Lord, and do not put it off from day to day. For just as His mercy is great, so too is His rebuke.”
