Fathers Nektarios and Theophanes, the founders of the wondrous Varlaam Monastery at Meteora, were brothers by birth. They were born in the second half of the fifteenth century in Ioannina, in Epirus. Their family, the Apsarades, was among the most prominent noble families of Ioannina.
The family had power, wealth, and honor, but also great virtue and holiness. Seven of its members—the father, the mother, three daughters, and these two sons—entered monastic life and dedicated both their wealth and themselves to God. Their family’s standing and their intelligence enabled them to receive an excellent education.
They counted all the things of this world as rubbish. Leaving behind the world, its pleasures, and its comforts, they became monks. They did not set out without discernment. They chose a holy elder named Savvas, a spiritual father gifted with discernment, and placed themselves under his obedience, keeping his instructions to the end. From the time they put on the monastic habit, they tasted neither fish, cheese, nor milk, neither oil nor wine. They lived only on legumes, vegetables, and fruit. Nektarios and Theophanes spent ten years with that holy elder. He taught them the whole of monastic life and raised them, as worthy men, to the priesthood. Then he departed to the Lord. Left without such a spiritual father, the venerable brothers,
still being young, went to the Holy Mountain, to the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou. There they found Saint Niphon, the Patriarch of Constantinople, living as a monk. His memory is celebrated on August 11. Saint Niphon welcomed them with joy, heard their concern, and advised them to return to their hermitage on the island of Ioannina. In obedience, the saints returned. But others had occupied their hermitage, so they built another farther inland on the island, together with churches dedicated to the Honorable Forerunner and Saint Nicholas. When many troubles arose there, the saints longed for hesychia, for inner stillness. So they followed what Saint Niphon had told them:
“If a temptation comes upon you, do not resist it. Leave that place and go elsewhere, so that you may live in peace.” They left behind everything they had built with so much labor and expense, and in 1511 they went to Meteora in Thessaly. After searching, they decided to stay for a time on one of Meteora’s steep rocks, called the Pillar of the Honorable Forerunner. They remained there, pursuing their spiritual struggle for seven years. Then, with the encouragement and blessing of the Metropolitan of Larissa, under whose authority Meteora fell at the time, and of the abbot of the Monastery of the Great Meteoron, they climbed the Rock of Varlaam in 1518.
The rock was uninhabited then. There they established a place for their ascetic struggle, alone in prayer with God. On the rock they found the ruins of the church of the Holy Three Hierarchs—Basil, Gregory, and John Chrysostom. An earlier monk named Varlaam had built it, and the rock took its name from him. They rebuilt the church, small but beautiful. As time passed, other monks began to come, drawn by the saints’ virtue. Before long, a full monastery had grown there. Then the venerable fathers saw that the church of the Three Hierarchs could no longer accommodate
the growing number of brothers. They built a magnificent new church dedicated to All Saints. Completed in 1544, it became the monastery’s main church. These venerable fathers also built other facilities for the growing brotherhood, including a place to care for the sick and one for elderly monks. They tended fields and vineyards and provided everything else needed to sustain the brotherhood. While caring for all these things, they did not neglect the spiritual progress of the brothers who were pursuing the ascetic life, and still less their own growth toward perfection in Christ. And so,
where there had once been no trace of life, a community arose whose people lived for God alone. That deserted rock became a ladder lifting those who sought salvation from earth to heaven. These venerable fathers continued their holy struggle to the end. Having pleased God and been counted worthy of many gifts and graces, they departed to the Lord, whom they had longed for and for whom they had struggled. Venerable Theophanes had been ill and greatly weakened for ten months. On Saturday, May 17, 1544, at the ninth hour, the splendid and most revered Church of All Saints was completed with its chief builder. Then,
such was his longing for the church that he rose eagerly and joyfully, leaning on his staff, and entered it. Seeing it complete, he raised his hands to heaven, said, “Glory to You, O God,” and gave thanks to All Saints. That sanctified soul also prayed for and blessed all the stonecutters, builders, masons, and craftsmen. Then he walked back to his cell. He made the sign of the precious Cross over himself and laid his body upon his bed, facing east. He stretched out his feet and began to breathe his last. It was about four in the afternoon, and his expression was gentle and joyful.
The brothers gathered around him were weeping: the disciples for their teacher, the monks for the one who had guided them into the Mysteries. They sang the canon of compunction, their rule of prayer. And then, O wonder, as they sang, a pure, bright star shone above the building, filling it with light. After sunset, this sun of monastic life also departed from this world. His holy soul entered the heavenly courts, where the song of the celebrating saints never ends. At that same moment, the star disappeared. Such was the passing of Venerable Theophanes. Venerable Nektarios fell asleep in the Lord later, on April 7, 1550.
What marks the lives of Venerable Theophanes and Nektarios, whom we celebrate today, is their offering of themselves, their dedication to God. It is striking that five other members of their family also dedicated themselves and their wealth to God. Dedication means freely and completely giving ourselves to God. We often make offerings to God, small or large: vows, gifts, alms, and the like. Usually, though, we stop there and keep ourselves for ourselves.
We may do many things for God, yet we do not give Him our lives. We are ready to give much, but not our hearts. And yet God says, “My son, give me your heart.” He asks us to dedicate our hearts, our whole being, to Him. He asks this for our sake. He needs nothing, not even us. He asks for our hearts so that He can give Himself to us. He asks for our whole being so that He may make us sharers in His grace, sanctify us, and bring us to theosis, to union with Him. Dedication is no heroic act reserved for a few, and monasticism is not its only form. Dedication is for every Christian.
It is for every Christian, whatever their particular place or way of life: married or unmarried, man or woman, rich or poor, uneducated or educated, prominent or unknown. To dedicate oneself is to live according to God’s will, and God’s will alone; for God, and for God alone. Then a person truly does good both for others and for themselves. Anyone can do this, at any time and in any place.
