The Apostle Simon is called Simon the Cananaean by the Evangelist Matthew, and Simon the Zealot by the Evangelist Luke. The two names, however, have the same meaning. According to the sacred interpreters, “Cananaean” means “zealot,” since “Cana” means zeal. He may have been called the Cananaean because he came from Cana of Galilee, because he had previously belonged to the religious and political party of the Jewish Zealots, or because he had great zeal: an ardent and abundant love for Almighty God. According to one tradition, he was the bridegroom at the wedding in Cana, where the Lord had been invited with His disciples and where He turned water into wine.
When Simon saw this miracle, he left his bride, his wedding, and his home, and followed Christ: his friend, the worker of miracles, the one who brings the bride to the wedding, and the Bridegroom of pure souls. Saint Simon was one of Christ’s twelve disciples and Apostles, so he was with the other Apostles in the upper room. There he was filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit when the Spirit descended in the form of tongues of fire on the day of Pentecost. After this, as an Apostle, he traveled through many parts of the world, exposing everywhere the error of worshiping many gods. According to one tradition, he preached the Gospel in Persia and Egypt and died by crucifixion. According to another, he preached in countries of Africa
and went to England. There he brought many unbelievers into the light of the Gospel. He was crucified by pagans, completed his martyrdom, and was buried there.
The Holy Martyrs Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyprinus came from the land called that of the Basques, probably the people we now know as the Basques of Spain. They were from the city of Prefacton, noble and wealthy sons of Vitalius, the ruler of the city. They were raised in godliness through the teaching of a most holy man named Onesimus, who preached Christ. After being questioned by Anigelion, who had been sent from Rome with imperial letters, they were sent by him to Licinius in Rome. Licinius sent them to Valerian for examination. Valerian sent them to the governor Diomedes, and Diomedes sent them to Tertillus,
the governor of Sicily. Each of these rulers subjected the Saints to different kinds of torture. Their sufferings were so cruel and unbearable that any one of them would have exhausted someone else in their place, or rather, killed him. At last Alphius was beheaded, Philadelphus was laid on a red-hot grate, and Cyprinus was placed in a red-hot pan. In this way, all three most holy victors ascended to heaven.
Saint Lawrence, whom we commemorate today, became a monk at the Great Lavra on Mount Athos. Because the heresy of Barlaam and Akindynos was then prevalent on Mount Athos, especially at the Lavra, he left and went to the village of Saint Lawrence in the region of Volos. There he set about building a holy monastery. At that time the devout emperor Alexios Komnenos reigned. He sent Saint Lawrence an imperial charter, which is preserved in the Vatican Library in Rome, as well as the gold and sacred vessels needed to build the church. Saint Lawrence also founded a skete dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ and the Prophet Elijah.
Saint Hesychios the Confessor, whom we commemorate today, came from Andrapa, a city in Galatia. Never did so peaceful a name suit the character and life of its bearer so well. From childhood he was gentle and quiet, sweet-natured and obedient. He never caused his mother the slightest pain. In his dealings with others, both while he lived in his homeland and later when he lived as a recluse on the mountain called Maion with a few brothers, he behaved in the same way, giving no one cause for sorrow. Yet his love of hesychia, inner stillness, and his gentleness
kept him from showing all the active zeal in Christ needed to bring light to a soul or defend the faith against its persecutors. His last years, however, passed in complete peace, far from all worldly noise. He also quietly gave up his soul into the hands of the One whose grace had given him the virtue of gentleness and his kind, peaceable manner.
“On whom will I look, if not on the humble and quiet one who trembles at my words?” These are the words of the Lord. Saint Hesychios, whom we commemorate today, reminds us through his name, his virtue, and his life how deeply they matter, indeed how necessary they are for our spiritual life and our salvation. For how can a person be saved unless God looks upon him? And how will the God of peace look upon him? How will God’s peaceful Spirit come to a person when there is disorder and turmoil within, a storm of logismoi, intrusive thoughts, or of desires or anger?
Saint John Chrysostom, commenting on the Apostle’s words, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life in all godliness and reverence,” says: “There are three kinds of war that are hardest to bear. The first is war as we usually know it, when our soldiers fight foreign enemies. The second is when there is peace, yet we fight among ourselves. The third is when each person fights within himself. This is the worst of all. War with outside enemies cannot do us great harm, since it cannot injure our soul. Nor can the second kind harm us if we refuse to let it. Even when others fight against us, we can remain at peace.
The Prophet says, ‘I was peaceful among those who hated peace, and when I spoke to them, they fought me without cause.’ But we cannot escape the third kind of war without danger. When the body rises against the soul and fierce desires are stirred up, when fleshly pleasures, anger, and envy flare up, we cannot attain the good things to come unless this war is brought to an end. Whoever fails to quiet this turmoil is bound to fall and suffer wounds that bring the death of Hell. So, the Saint concludes, we must take great care every day
that this war neither rises within us nor, if it does rise, continues, but that it is calmed and put to rest. What good is it if the whole world enjoys deep peace while you are at war with yourself? This is the peace you must have. If we have it, nothing outside us can harm us. Peace among people also helps greatly toward this inner peace. That is why the Apostle says, ‘that we may lead a quiet and peaceful life.’ But those who are not Christians can also live quietly and peacefully. You might even find people given to excess and waste living that way. To show that he does not mean such a life, the Apostle adds
‘in all godliness and reverence.’ Godliness means both right belief and the way we live. Peace and stillness in God are closely bound to humility; indeed, they are born of it.

«Επιβλέψω αλλ' ή επί των ταπεινών και ησύχιων και τρέμοντα τους λόγους μου», είναι τα λόγια του Κυρίου, τα οποία ο σήμερα εορταζόμενος Όσιος Ησύχιος με το όνομα, την αρετή και τη ζωή του έρχεται να μας θυμίσει και να μας τονίσει τη μεγάλη του σημασία, το απαραίτητο, θα λέγαμε, για την πνευματική μας ζωή, για την υπόθεση της σωτηρίας μας. Και πράγματι, πώς είναι δυνατόν να σωθεί ο άνθρωπος εάν δεν επιβλέψει επάνω του ο Θεός; Και πώς θα επιβλέψει ο Θεός της ειρήνης, πώς θα έλθει το ειρηνικό Πνεύμα του Θεού στον άνθρωπο όταν υπάρχει ακαταστασία, ταραχή, θύελλα λογισμών ή επιθυμιών ή θυμού;
