This was during the fearful, turbulent reign of Emperor Diocletian, toward the end of the third century after Christ. Julitta came from Iconium and was among the most devout and virtuous Christian women. She was widowed while still young and did not marry again.
She cherished the memory of her husband, who had departed to the Lord, and devoted herself to caring for her only son, Cyricus, who had still been an infant when his father died. Her child’s life was precious to her, and she feared for him when persecution broke out against the Christians. As the number of victims in Iconium grew, she left her home and property behind. Taking only the money she could gather, she went to Seleucia in Cilicia. But the persecution had reached there too. With her son in her arms, she fled to Tarsus. There, what she feared most came to pass. When Prefect Alexander heard about Julitta, he had her arrested. Seeing how dearly she loved her son, he tried to break her faith. He told her that if she persisted, both she and her child would die. But this loving mother was also a devout Christian. She would never betray Christ, even if she and her son were to be slaughtered a thousand times. The prefect took little Cyricus from his mother.
He tried to win the child over with caresses, but the little boy kept looking toward his mother, murmuring and calling on the name of Christ. At one point he kicked the prefect in the stomach as hard as he could, making him cry out in pain. Then he said, “I love Christ.” Enraged, the prefect threw the child down the steps of the tribunal. Cyricus struck his head and gave up his blessed, holy soul to Christ his Master, who crowned him with the victor’s crown of a martyr. At the sight, his poor mother wept and groaned. But faith gave her courage in that hour of martyrdom, and she did not break into wailing or give way to sobs.
Mastering her grief, she said to the prefect, “As you have crushed my child’s head, so your false religion will be crushed, you wicked ruler.” Blessed Julitta endured many tortures. When she still refused to deny Christ, she was beheaded and received the crown of martyrdom. The gathering in honor of these Saints was held in Constantinople, in the church of Archangel Michael, a little above the place known today as Katerga Harbor.
Saint Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles of the Russian Church and ruler of Rus, was the son of Sviatoslav, ruler of Kiev. He was born in the year 949. His mother was named Malusha. She had served as steward to Sviatoslav’s mother, Saint Olga, who was the first to embrace Christianity in Rus and led many others to the faith. After his father’s death, Vladimir was pursued by his brothers Yaropolk and Oleg and fled to Sweden. Later, however, he defeated them and took the throne of Kiev. At that time Vladimir was still a pagan. His father had worshiped idols to the end of his life and had not followed his mother Olga in the faith of Christ.
Vladimir took many wives, with whom he had twelve sons and eleven daughters. Before becoming a Christian, he raised a great idol of Perun on a hill in Kiev, near the bank of the Dnieper. Perun was worshiped as the god of thunder and lightning and was the chief god of the Slavs. According to ancient Russian chronicles, human sacrifices were offered to him. At that time Kiev had two churches: one dedicated to the Prophet Elijah and a small wooden church of Holy Wisdom. They had been founded by Vladimir’s grandmother, Saint Olga, and by the first Christians she had led to faith in Christ.
Vladimir was then a vigorous and warlike ruler. He fought the various Slavic peoples, the Lithuanians, and the Bulgarians. But through the grace of God, and through the prayers and supplications of his grandmother Saint Olga, he came to believe in the true God. Ancient chronicles tell of many wondrous events surrounding this holy ruler’s conversion to the true faith of Christ. Christian peoples, including Greeks and Latins, sent missionaries to him in Kiev. He sent them away, however, and dispatched his own envoys to Christian lands to learn from which people he should receive Christian Baptism.
Vladimir’s envoys went to Constantinople, where they attended the Divine Liturgy and other services in Hagia Sophia. What they saw moved them so deeply that they were astonished. Later they told Vladimir, “We did not know whether we were in heaven or on earth.” They could not tell which it was. They added, “If the Greek faith were not the finest, your grandmother, who was a very wise woman, would not have embraced it.” Then Vladimir came to believe in Christ and was baptized in Kiev in the year 987.
He also married Anna, the sister of the Byzantine emperors Basil II, known as the Bulgar-Slayer, and Constantine VIII. He had all the idols thrown down. First he baptized the people of Kiev at the mouth of a tributary of the Dnieper, also called the Borysthenes. A monument was later raised there to commemorate this great event. He then baptized the rest of the people of Rus. Only in the principality of Novgorod did he meet resistance from the priests of the idols. Vladimir built two beautiful churches in Kiev, known locally as Desiatinnaya and Spasna Beretsove. After his Baptism, his character changed completely, and he became a true Christian. The chronicler Nestor says that throughout his realm
he abolished the death penalty because he believed Christianity forbade it. Blessed Vladimir was held in great esteem by the people of Rus, and the Russian epic songs known as byliny place him at the center of the Kiev cycle. Having lived in a way pleasing to God, the Saint reposed on July 15 in the year 1015. The Lord, who rewards His faithful, numbered his blessed soul among the Saints. The Church named him Saint Vladimir, Equal to the Apostles, and honors his memory on July 15, the day he entrusted his holy soul to God.
In these two accounts of the Saints, we have seen how parents, and elders more generally, can help children spiritually and guide them toward salvation. We saw a little child, still an infant, become a Saint. His mother surely played an important part. We may suppose that she proclaimed Christ to him through her words and through her example. The seed fell on good ground, on a gentle and innocent soul, and by God’s grace it bore fruit a hundredfold: faith, confession of Christ, and martyrdom leading to salvation. Of course, this case may seem relatively easy. It is common for young
children to receive readily what is offered to them. They are receptive to the Word of God, which can bear the fruit of faith in them. Children usually do well at that age; difficulties often begin in adolescence. That is when things become hard. What can be done then? Saint Olga, the grandmother of Saint Vladimir, whom we commemorate today, shows us. Vladimir had grown up among idols. He was a powerful supreme ruler, with wealth and glory, and nothing prevented him from living a life of sin. From a human point of view, there seemed little or no prospect of his repentance.
Yet there was one powerful influence: the example and prayers of a saintly grandmother. Through these, the grace of God worked a miracle. It brought about the repentance that had seemed so difficult, even unlikely. This was deep, genuine repentance, turning a great sinner into a Saint, and indeed one Equal to the Apostles. He was saved, and he led others toward salvation as well. Saint Olga thus shows us what helps in difficult cases: a holy example and the mighty power of prayer. Let us not despair. God’s grace can work miracles, but it seeks something human on which to take hold. Let us attend
to our struggle to live according to God’s will and, above all, through our prayers give His grace the foothold it needs.
