On the first of November, our Church commemorates Saints Cosmas and Damian, the Wonderworking Unmercenaries; the Martyrs Kyriene and Juliana; the Martyrs Caesarius, Dasius, and five others; the Hieromartyrs John the Bishop and James the Priest; the Martyr Hermenes Geldos; the Martyrs Cyprian and Juliana; the New Venerable Martyr James and his two disciples, James the Deacon and Dionysius the Monk; and Venerable David, who lived an ascetic life on Euboea.
Saints Cosmas and Damian, called the Unmercenaries because they healed without payment, came from Asia and were the sons of the devout Theodote. There are two other pairs of Unmercenaries named Cosmas and Damian. One pair came from Rome, suffered martyrdom in AD 284, and is commemorated on July 1. The other came from Arabia and is commemorated on November 17. Theodote, the mother of the Unmercenaries we celebrate today, had been a Christian since childhood. After she was widowed, she devoted herself to raising her sons in godliness, in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
She taught them through her words and her excellent example. Her sons studied medicine and immediately began their work of great compassion. Yet they sought to heal souls even more than bodies, proclaiming the name of Christ everywhere and at all times. By putting love into action, our saints were counted worthy of apostolic gifts. Just as the holy Apostles received from Christ the gift of healing every disease, so these brothers received the same gift. They healed the sick through the grace of the Holy Spirit, without herbs, ointments, or other remedies. With great humility, they tended the patients’ wounds themselves. They also lived in such poverty
that they acquired neither money nor even a second garment. That is why people called them the Unmercenaries instead of calling them by their names, Cosmas and Damian. Their mercy extended beyond people to animals, which they also healed. They treated rich and poor alike, strangers and their own countrymen alike. The saints attributed everything to the grace of God. Although they had read the works of ancient physicians such as Hippocrates, Galen, and Dioscorides, they relied far more on the name of Christ, through whose power they healed. Medicine cannot make a blind person see,
a lame person walk, or a dead person rise. But through the power of Christ, the brothers did all these things. So people brought them many who were sick, blind, paralyzed, or afflicted by demons, and all went away healed in body and edified in soul. Let us tell one particular story. A woman named Palladia had long been seriously ill and confined to her bed. The saints visited her and healed her at once.
Overjoyed by this great and wondrous healing, Palladia offered the saints three eggs as a small token of thanks. They refused, not because the gift was small, but because they would accept no payment at all for healing. The woman was deeply saddened. Waiting for her chance, she approached the younger brother, Saint Damian, and tearfully made him promise not to hurt her feelings but to accept her small gift. Moved by compassion, he relented and took the three eggs. A few days later, blessed Damian told his brother what had happened. When Saint Cosmas heard, he was indignant. He sighed and wept for his brother, believing that Damian had fallen into the grave sin of greed. He rebuked him for breaking their express agreement never to accept gifts for their healings.
Cosmas also said that, after his death, his body must not be buried where Damian’s would be buried. But God, who knows every heart and knew Damian’s innocent intention, did not leave Saint Cosmas grieving over his brother. In a vision, God revealed why Damian had accepted the gift, brought peace to Cosmas’s heart, and reconciled them. Cosmas, however, did not tell the others about the vision. Our saints continued to do good for many people. They reached a place in Asia called Phereman, where Saint Damian fell ill. By God’s will, he departed this perishable life to enjoy the imperishable beauty of Paradise. Not many days later, Saint Cosmas also fell asleep in the Lord. But the Christians
had been instructed by Saint Cosmas not to place his relics beside Saint Damian’s, and they knew nothing of the vision. So they did not want to bury him near his brother. But God, who works wonders, arranged what happened next. A camel whose leg Saint Cosmas had once healed came to them. It spoke with a human voice, as Balaam’s donkey had long ago. For when God wills it, the order of nature gives way. The camel said that God’s will was for the two brothers to be buried side by side. When the Christians who were there witnessed this extraordinary miracle,
they did as the camel had said. Miracles and healings continued after the saints fell asleep in the Lord. Let us mention just a few. One farmer, while harvesting his field, lay down at noon to sleep in the shade of a tree. A snake entered his stomach through his mouth, and his life was in danger. Some relatives carried him to the saints’ tomb and laid him upon it. That night, the Holy Unmercenaries appeared and gave him something to drink. The next day, he vomited up the snake. Another Christian, an elderly man, became gravely ill with dropsy and a swollen abdomen. He expected to die.
Then he heard about the miracles taking place at the church of the Holy Unmercenaries. At his request, his relatives carried him there on a bed and laid him before the saints’ icon. He stayed for several days without seeing any benefit, because the saints were testing his faith and had not yet healed him. Instead of showing patient endurance and asking the saints more earnestly for help, he complained and spoke against them. One day, he sent word to his relatives to come and take him home, so that at least he might die there. They came for him, but on the way they stopped to rest and fell asleep. The sick man remained awake, and the Holy Unmercenaries appeared to him as travelers.
As they spoke, the sick man told them how disappointed he was in the saints. They urged him to return to their church. Since that would have been difficult for the people accompanying him, the saints themselves carried him back and placed him before their icon. That night, the Holy Unmercenaries appeared to him holding swords. Cosmas said to Damian, “Cut open this elder’s belly, for he has spoken blasphemously.” The man felt as though Damian cut him with the sword, and a great deal of foul-smelling fluid poured out. In this way, he was healed of the swelling in his abdomen. The following night, the saints appeared again and healed the wound from the sword. So the man went away healthy, glorifying God.
In the Church of Christ, many spiritual gifts are at work: discernment of hidden things, foreknowledge, healing the sick, casting out demons, teaching, guiding the Church, and others. These gifts come from God; it is God who gives them. As a rule, a supernatural, divine gift is given where there is a corresponding human virtue. For example, the gift of healing various illnesses is given to people who possess the human virtue of compassion in great measure. I think two points should be stressed. First, gifts
from God, as well as human gifts such as positions of responsibility, are not given so that a person can take pride in them. They bring obligations. They are given to serve society, especially the Church, to build up the saints, and ultimately to save souls. Second, these gifts and positions do not in themselves give worth to those who hold them, since they are received from outside. A person’s worth comes from what that person is: from virtue, and above all from love.
That is why the Apostle Paul tells us that whatever gift I may have, if I have no love, I am nothing. When a gift or position becomes a means of putting love into action, it benefits both others and the one who holds it. When it is used with self-interest and pride, it may benefit others, but it harms the person who holds it. So it is better not to seek gifts or positions. Instead, each of us should use the many gifts we already have to cultivate love. To acquire love is to acquire God, and love enables us to live in Paradise. As Saint Maximus the Confessor says, whoever has acquired love has acquired God Himself, because God is love.
