Thrice-blessed Basil, there you shall go and be filled with joy. Saint Basil, whom we celebrate today, lived during the time of the impious iconoclasts. Because of his exceptional virtue and godly life, he became bishop of Parium. He refused to agree with the iconoclast heresy or sign a decree rejecting the Holy Icons. So this blessed man spent his whole life amid tribulations and persecutions, always fleeing from place to place, defending the teachings of the Holy Fathers and rejecting those who held false beliefs. Having served God in this way and pleased Him in all things, he fell asleep in peace.
From a foul-smelling root came a most fragrant fruit: the venerable Anthousa, who flowered beyond this earthly life. Venerable Anthousa, whose memory the Church also commemorates today, was the daughter of the Christ-hating emperor Constantine Copronymus, who reigned from AD 741 to 775. Although she grew up in the imperial palace, surrounded by iconoclasts and people devoted to bodily pleasures, she was deeply devout and a defender of Orthodoxy. She revered and venerated the Holy Icons and turned away from sensual pleasures and bodily comforts in general.
Her father tried many times to force her to marry, but she would not yield. When that emperor met an evil end, the blessed Anthousa took the opportunity to distribute her wealth to the poor, to churches, and to monasteries. In this way she became a support to widows and a mother to many orphans. The Orthodox empress Irene, her sister-in-law and the wife of her brother Leo IV, repeatedly urged her to stay by her side and share in the rule of the empire. But Anthousa never agreed. While the blessed Anthousa still lived in the palace,
she wore royal garments outwardly, but a hairshirt underneath. Her food was simple and ascetic, and she drank only pure water. Tears were always in her eyes, and hymns and psalms never left her lips. After living this life pleasing to God, she was counted worthy to become a nun through the hands of Patriarch Tarasios, at the monastery called Homonoia. From then on, she never left the monastery or missed worship in the Church. She never slackened or neglected her prayer. Above all, her humility was boundless.
She served all the sisters, adorned the Church, and carried water. She served at the table and eagerly carried out every other task assigned to her. Having spent her life in such works pleasing to God, the blessed Anthousa departed to the Lord, rich in virtues, at the age of fifty-two.
Today people divide themselves into different groups and shut themselves within them, breaking the unity of humankind. This is a consequence of the Fall, when humanity lost its life in Paradise. The Fathers teach that, after our relationship with God was broken, we became divided within ourselves and separated from our neighbors and from nature. Yet in Christ Jesus, all these divisions have been, and continue to be, overcome. One of them is the division between male and female. The Apostle Paul speaks of this division in his letter to the Galatians
and of how it is overcome.
He writes, “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” Within the Church, all who have been baptized and live according to Christ’s commandments form one body with one head, Christ, and are inspired by the one All-Holy Spirit. All become Christ. Christ is all and in all. Thus, within the Church, differences of race, nationality, and sex are overcome, though they are not erased, because the one who reigns over all is Christ.
In all this variety, there is unity through the Holy Spirit. We can say this about feminism, too. A woman finds her place within the Church. As a member of Christ’s Church, she fights the good fight of faith and becomes holy just as a man does. She inherits the same eternal blessings, is honored by all the members of the Church, and experiences even now the reality of a future in which distinctions of sex will cease. No one raises the human person, and especially the woman who has been brought low, as high as Christ does. In Orthodoxy, we have a healthy feminism that raises women up without, in the name of equality, violating their nature and
their role.
