Today, February 6, our Church commemorates Saint Boukolos, Bishop of Smyrna; the Holy Martyr Julian of Emesa; the Holy Martyr Fausta and her fellow martyrs Evilasios and Maximos; the Holy Martyrs Faustos, Basil, and Silouanos; the Holy Martyrs of Darios; Saint Photios the Confessor, Archbishop of Constantinople; our venerable fathers Barsanuphius the Great Elder and John, called the Prophet; Saint John of the city of Lykopolis; and Saint James the Ascetic.
Barsanuphius and John were living canons of ascetic discipline and masters of hesychia, inner stillness. They rose to extraordinary heights of virtue through their struggles in solitary cells near the renowned monastery of Abba Seridos, outside Gaza in Palestine. They flourished in the first half of the sixth century. Barsanuphius was from Egypt and was highly educated, as his answers to those who brought him questions show. His answers, together with those of Saint John, whom we commemorate with him today, have been preserved in a separate book. Saint John's homeland is unknown, because he never wished to speak of it.
Saint Barsanuphius left his homeland of Egypt and went to the Holy Land. After venerating the Lord's most holy Tomb and the other holy sites, he placed himself under a devout elder named Markellos. He became a monk and lived with him for some time. After his elder died, he went to a secluded cell and lived in hesychia, inner stillness. He advanced so far in virtue that many came to him for counsel and to confess their sins, although he was not a priest. Many monks and abbots came as well, and he counseled them all and brought them peace. He cleansed his heart of the passions and was granted the grace to become a temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of his purity, the saint was enriched with
the true, perfect humility that raises us to heaven. This was not the kind of humility made up of outwardly humble gestures and words, but the humility the Holy Spirit builds in the hearts of the faithful. Many abbots therefore wanted him in their monasteries to strengthen the monks with his wonderful counsel and teaching. Before long, he decided to go to Abba Seridos's monastery. Seridos had not asked him to come, but, as Barsanuphius himself said, God sent him there. The saint settled in an outer cell above the monastery and remained enclosed there for eighteen years,
receiving no visitors. The only person he received was Abba Seridos, who brought him the most pure Holy Gifts every week, along with three small loaves of bread and a little water. Blessed Barsanuphius became so disciplined that he often forgot to eat, and the loaves remained untouched until the following week. Through Abba Seridos, he also communicated with his spiritual children and with others who asked for his advice in writing. Because no one saw him, some ill-disposed people claimed that he did not exist and that Abba Seridos wrote the answers himself. To dispel this false belief, Barsanuphius received the monastery's monks on one occasion only
and washed their feet. The saint kept his strict rule of prayer under every circumstance. Even when he was ill, he never left his cell for treatment and never received a doctor. He also took care to avoid involvement in disputes among monks and monasteries, even the doctrinal disputes of his time. He sharply rebuked those who stirred up such quarrels. In one answer on these matters he writes: “Woe to our generation! What have we abandoned, and what are we investigating? The heavens tremble: why do people busy themselves with such matters?” They seek to fathom what cannot be understood.
God asks these things of us: holiness, purification, silence, and humility. And indeed, if we acquire these virtues, the spirit of error and heresy is driven away, and deep peace comes over the Church. Through the saint's wondrous way of life, God also gave him the rich gift of working miracles. He healed Abba Seridos when he became gravely ill. He likewise healed another brother who suffered greatly, and many others. It was not only the saint's soul and nous, his spiritual intellect, that were filled with grace and made holy. His sacred body, too, was filled with divine grace and holiness. For that reason, things that touched him
also received divine power and grace. The monastic hood he sent to Abba John sheltered him from many temptations. Another holy monk sent Barsanuphius his hood and his polystavrion, a garment marked with many crosses, and asked him to wear them and send them back so they might be a shelter and help to him. Many people sent for a blessing and received a piece of the bread he ate or some of the water he drank. When they received these, they found relief from the passions that assailed them. What has been said of Saint Barsanuphius can also be said of Saint John, the other elder. He lived the same quiet life as Barsanuphius
and was granted the same gifts of the Spirit. In particular, he had the gift of foresight and prophecy, which is why he was called the Prophet. Hearing of Saint Barsanuphius's virtues, Saint John longed to share his ascetic struggle. Barsanuphius, having foreseen through God's grace what John would become, gave him the first cell he himself had occupied at Abba Seridos's monastery and moved into another nearby cell. Saint John lived in hesychia, inner stillness, for eighteen years, until his death. During that time, as the monastery's abbot said, no one ever saw him smile or become troubled, or receive the Holy Gifts without tears.
He foresaw and foretold matters of life and death. With foreknowledge, he chose those worthy to be ordained priests, and he did many other things besides. Throughout their long years of ascetic discipline, these venerable fathers never met one another, for they kept the rules of prayer they had set for themselves with great care.
Abba Seridos alone carried their messages to one another and to the brothers who sent them questions in writing. Blessed John, however, showed boundless obedience and reverence toward the great elder, Saint Barsanuphius. He faithfully carried out the instructions Barsanuphius sent him in writing, as many passages in their book show.
Through their wondrous way of life, the saints received such grace and attained such unity of spirit that whatever one wrote from his cell to build up the faithful, the other confirmed from his own cell, without any special discussion between them. Often, when people put the same question to each saint separately, they received the same answer from both. Though these blessed men remained enclosed in their cells, they were deeply concerned for the salvation of their neighbors. Every day they strengthened the faithful with written counsel, as we have said. And they supported the faithful in their struggles not only during their earthly lives;
they also took care to benefit them after death. They left their holy book to all the brothers as a father's inheritance to his spiritual children, so that they might read it continually and draw lasting benefit from it. Some of the answers in the book were written by the other elder, Saint John. Most were written—or rather dictated—by the Great Elder, Saint Barsanuphius, at the command of the Holy Spirit and for the benefit of souls, not of his own will. As he himself says, “I write all these things, not of my own will, but at the command of the Holy Spirit.” All were given for the correction and benefit of the soul
and the conscience of the inner person. A remarkable event also took place. Once Saint Barsanuphius summoned Abbot Seridos, who served as his scribe, and told him to write an answer to the monk John. Seridos could not hold in his memory everything the saint had said. He wondered how he could write down so many words, and why, if the elder wanted them written, he had not told him to bring paper and ink so he could hear and record the words one by one. Through the Holy Spirit's gift of discernment, the Great Barsanuphius knew Seridos's thought. His face immediately shone, and he said to Seridos:
“Write, and do not be afraid. Even if I speak ten thousand words to you, know that the Holy Spirit will not let you write a single word or letter more or less, even if you wish to. He will guide your hand to write everything I told you in its proper order.”
Three weeks after the death of Abbot Seridos, Saint John the Prophet peacefully gave up his holy soul into the hands of the living God. From then on, Abba Barsanuphius kept silent and gave no more answers to anyone. Such was the life and conduct of our God-bearing fathers, Barsanuphius and John.
God granted them supernatural, heavenly gifts, and their end was blessed. Now they see God face to face. They are bathed in the ineffable light of the three-sunned Godhead, and they intercede without ceasing for the whole world.
We will share a few of Abba Barsanuphius's many teachings filled with divine wisdom, and with these we will close today's account of the saints. How can a person find rest? “Place all your hope in your Master,” the saint tells us, “and be at rest.” Then you will find rest. How can a person live free from worry and anxiety? Recognizing the good that tribulations can bring to the spiritual life, the saint advises us: “Whether you face tribulations, need and hardship, illness, or bodily toil, give thanks to God for everything that comes upon you.” This is the carefree life of a person of God. Elsewhere,
emphasizing the great value of giving thanks to God, he says: “What brings God's gifts to a person is a heart that gives thanks without ceasing. Lips that continually thank God receive His blessings. Thanksgiving intercedes with God for us in our weakness. And in prayer, whether we receive what we ask for or not, let us thank God.” Clearly, when God does not give us something, He withholds it for our good. On prayer he also said: “Since the prayer of a righteous person has great power when offered with warmth and zeal, as Holy Scripture says, let us not neglect to ask the righteous to pray for us.”
For even if we are unworthy, our good Master regards His servants with favor, as He has done many times before, and has mercy on us. For Scripture says, “The righteous cried out from the depths of their souls, and the Lord heard them.” What attitude should we have when people praise us? “Having a reputation or glory greater than one's deeds,” the Abba tells us, “does no harm, provided one takes no pleasure or delight in words of praise and does not agree with what is said. Likewise, a person falsely accused of murder is not judged guilty before God if he has committed no such murder.” The person who is praised
When someone praises you, you should think, “People respect me because they do not know who I really am.” Abba Barsanuphius said to his brother by birth, who had become a monk late in life and asked for help when he fell ill: “This illness has come upon you so that you may not depart to God without the fruits of ascetic discipline. If you show patient endurance and thank God for this trial without complaining, God will count this bodily suffering as part of your struggle in monastic life, since you have not spent many years as a monk. So thank God, my brother, for bringing you into a condition from which you will benefit so greatly.”
This counsel of the saint is valuable for every one of us: “When you go through sorrow, hope that relief will come. Then you can bear your trials bravely and avoid despair, which harms the soul. When the joy you have hoped for does come, take care that it does not carry you away or scatter your attention among happy events, so that you forget the beneficial mourning for sin that belongs to life in Christ. Be measured, knowing that sorrow will come again. Then, when it does, you will be ready for it. It will not take you by surprise, and you will bear it bravely.”
This is also the meaning of the saying, “I was dishonored, and I was not troubled.” In general, if we want to grow in our spiritual life, we must learn to love our sorrows. “Love sorrows in all things, that you may become a proven son of the saints.” And let us remember that the things of this world decay and pass away, while patient endurance for God’s sake saves the one who possesses it.
