Artemon the bishop was from Seleucia in Pisidia, where he was born and raised in the days of the holy Apostles. When Saint Paul the Apostle traveled through those parts preaching the word of the Gospel, he met Saint Artemon and appointed him bishop, shepherd, and teacher of that city, for a lamp should not be hidden under a basket. Artemon shepherded his flock faithfully and in holiness. He became a haven for all in need: a caretaker of widows and orphans, a helper of the poor, and a healer of souls and bodies. After a life filled with such works pleasing to God, he departed to the Lord in great old age.

Saint Artemon the Priest, whose memory our Holy Church also keeps today, lived during the fierce persecution of the Church under Diocletian. He was already very old. He had served as a reader for sixteen years, a deacon for twenty-eight, and then a priest for thirty-three. So he must have been over a hundred when Diocletian’s savage persecution came upon the churches. The news deeply troubled Artemon because he loved the many faithful in his care, among them countless women and children. As for himself, his only sorrow was that his bodily strength was no longer great enough.

He could no longer take a more active part in the struggle and encourage those whose hearts might falter. But Divine Providence did not leave the elderly priest without a part to play in that trial. An imperial envoy named Patricius had been sent to Laodicea in Asia Minor to oversee harsh measures against the Christians there. He heard that Artemon, though too old to travel about, was working through Christians he trusted, inspiring and encouraging them so that the Christians of Laodicea remained steadfast in their devotion to Christ. Patricius summoned him before him.

He rebuked Artemon and warned that, if he continued, he would condemn him to death despite his age. Artemon said nothing. But once he left, he continued his work with even greater energy. One of his greatest achievements was bringing Vitalius, a priest of the idols, to the Christian faith. Still, Artemon was not content to work only there. He begged God to strengthen him so he could serve the Church beyond Laodicea. His longing and prayer were heard. With almost youthful vigor, he visited various cities of Asia Minor, where he strengthened the faithful

and brought unbelievers to faith in Christ. At last, he was counted worthy to die a martyr. Thus he ended his life on the front line of the Christian struggle. His body was worn down by age, yet he was a courageous spiritual athlete, through the wonderful resolve, faith, and love that burned within his God-loving, fearless soul.

Zacharias, whose memory the Church also keeps today, appears to be that grace-filled son of Abba Carion, who is commemorated on November 24. While still a child, Saint Zacharias went with his father to the Skete in Egypt and became a monk.

He advanced so far in humility that he was counted worthy to have the grace of the Holy Spirit dwell richly in his soul, as the Sayings of the Desert Fathers tell us. Many great fathers and elders asked him how they should live, knowing that the Holy Spirit rested upon him. Abba Macarius asked him, “Tell me, what is the work of a monk?” Zacharias replied, “Are you asking me, Father?” Abba Macarius said, “I seek to learn from you, and I trust your answer, because something within me urges me to ask you.” Zacharias replied, “As I see it, Father, the work of a monk is to press himself in all things.” Abba Moses also came to Zacharias and asked, “Tell me what I should do.” At this, Zacharias fell at Abba Moses’ feet and said, “You are asking me, Father?” The elder answered, “Believe me, my child Zacharias, I saw the Holy Spirit descend upon you, and that is why I must ask you.” Zacharias then took his hood,

put it under his feet, and trampled on it. He said, “Unless a person is humbled like this, he cannot become a monk.” His father Carion said of Saint Zacharias, “I labored much more than my son Zacharias, but I did not reach the spiritual measure he reached through his humility and stillness.” Once, Abba Zacharias entered a state of theoria, or divine vision, and through God’s grace and divine uncreated energies, he felt as though his inner being were on fire. His father Carion thought this came from demons and struck him. Zacharias went to Abba Poemen and told him what had happened, and Poemen sent him to another elder.

From that elder he learned that the vision had come from God. He was also told to remain obedient to his father. When Saint Zacharias was near death, Abba Moses asked him, “What do you see?” Zacharias replied, “Is it not better to keep silent, Father?” The elder answered, “Yes, my child, keep silent.” As Zacharias was dying, Abba Isidore, who was sitting there, looked up to heaven and said, “Rejoice, my child Zacharias, for the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven have been opened to you.”

Today, the account of Zacharias’ life reminds us of the great and essential virtue of humility. We could say that humility draws all the other virtues along with it. That is why it is the spiritual place where the Spirit of God rests, as He rested upon the humble Saint Zacharias. His father, Saint Carion, said that although he had labored more than Zacharias, he had not reached his son’s spiritual measure. Saint Isaac the Syrian agrees, telling us that God gives grace not for our labors in pursuing the virtues, nor for the virtues themselves, but for humility.

The grace of God is everything, and it rests on the foundation of knowing that, on our own, we are nothing. The deeper that foundation, the greater the building God raises. The more earth of pride we dig out of ourselves, the more the Spirit enters in. The smaller we make ourselves, the greater we will be in the Kingdom of Heaven. It is rightly said, then, that progress in the spiritual life is progress in humility. We should truly love and cultivate this virtue that lifts us up: choosing what is simple and humble, avoiding honors and praise, and above all bearing the humiliations

that God allows to come into our daily lives without complaint, and even gladly. Saint Zacharias said, as he trampled on his hood, that unless a person is humbled like this, he cannot become a monk.

And we believe that unless a person is humbled like this, he cannot become a monk or even an ordinary Christian. For God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.
