Today, August 12, our Church commemorates the holy martyrs Anicetus and Photius, Saint Palamon, the twelve holy martyrs who had left military service, Saint Castor, the holy martyrs Pamphilus and Capito, and Saints Sergius and Stephen.
The holy martyrs Anicetus and Photius lived in the time of the emperor Diocletian, at the beginning of the third century after Christ. Photius was Anicetus’s nephew, and both came from Nicomedia, which then served as the eastern capital of the Roman emperors. When Diocletian spoke against the Christians before the Senate, intending to launch a persecution, Anicetus was there. He was not afraid of the tyrant’s threats. At last he addressed the emperor publicly, telling him that his measures against the Christians were misguided. It would be a blessing, he said, if the emperor understood that they were the healthiest part of his people,
the people on whom he could build the strength and glory of the empire. But Diocletian could not grasp this truth. And Caesar Galerius, who stood close to him, kept him from seeing things more clearly. So Diocletian put Anicetus on trial.
Anicetus remained steadfast in his confession of Christ. In the amphitheater they released a huge, fearsome lion against him, a lion that had not eaten for two days. But as the beast approached Anicetus, it lost its ferocity.
The Saint thanked God. Then an earthquake struck, and a great statue of Hercules fell and shattered.
The emperor ordered the martyr to be beheaded. But the soldier commanded to do it found that his hand would not move; he could not bring down the sword. So the emperor changed his order. He had the Saint bound to a wheel, with a fire lit beneath it. As the wheel cut into this athlete of Christ and the flames burned him, Anicetus prayed to God. At once his bonds came loose, the wheel stopped and could not be moved, and the fire went out. Photius, who was there, ran to his uncle Anicetus and embraced him. It became clear that he too was a Christian. He was arrested and persecuted.
Photius was tried on the spot, and together with his uncle he suffered a series of unbearable torments. Both were bound in chains and thrown into prison. Then they were torn, burned, and pelted with stones by the executioner in the theater. Through all this, these athletes of Christ remained unharmed, but the torments continued. They were tied by their feet and dragged by wild horses, beaten severely, and thrown back into prison. There they spent three years in hardships and privations beyond description. Their bodies wasted away, but their resolve and their faith in Christ never wavered. Each time they were pressed to deny Christ, they repeated:
“We are Christians.” Their persecutors heated the so-called Baths of Antoninus fiercely and shut them inside, but once again they remained unharmed. Finally, Diocletian ordered them into a blazing furnace. There the Saints prayed and gave up their souls into God’s hands, receiving from Him the crowns of their martyrdom. It is said that they remained alive in the furnace for three days. When their bodies were drawn out with iron implements, they were whole and intact: the fire had not harmed even a hair of their heads.
The whole struggle and steadfast effort of the Saints we celebrate today—and, we might say, of all the Saints—was to remain in communion with Christ. For them, that communion was a matter of life and death.
A person who is in communion with Christ has Him living within, as the Apostle Paul says: “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” Communion with Christ helps us grow in the spiritual life. It cleanses us from sins, sanctifies and illumines us, and grants us eternal life. Communion with the Lord sanctifies body and soul, drives away troubling imaginings, and cleanses us of the passions, those disordered desires. It gives us confidence before God, illumination, and strength to grow in virtue and move toward perfection. It brings spiritual joy and health of body and soul. We too can have and preserve this communion with Christ through a pure Orthodox faith: “that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith.” We can also cultivate it through the Jesus Prayer, as the nous, our spiritual mind, descends into the heart and continually says, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God,
have mercy on me, a sinner.” We enter into communion with Christ by keeping His commandments and acquiring the virtues. “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.” We enter into communion with the Lord by listening to the words of God. We enter into communion with Christ by truly eating and drinking His Body and Blood: “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.” Above all, the spiritual place of communion with Christ is His Church. The Church is communion with Christ,
the communion of the created with the uncreated, of God with humanity.
