Saint Theonas, whose memory our Church celebrates today, flourished in the sixteenth century. Where he was born, and how he became bishop of Thessaloniki, are unknown to us. What we know of his life comes from the Life of the Holy Martyr James the New. James lived a life of ascesis, or ascetic discipline, on the Holy Mountain, Mount Athos, above Iviron Monastery, where the Skete of the Honorable Forerunner now stands. That Life tells us that Theonas was a priest and served as prior at Pantokrator Monastery. But he loved the life of hesychasm, the tradition of inner stillness, more than life in a monastic community. So he would take offerings and other food
and go to visit James, who would later become a holy martyr. At that time James was renowned among all the fathers of the Holy Mountain for the mystical revelations and heavenly gifts he had been granted the grace to receive from God. Theonas became a disciple of Saint James and joined his company,
grateful that he had been counted worthy to have such a heavenly man as his teacher and elder, his spiritual father. After a divine revelation, Saint James left for the world and settled at the Monastery of the Honorable Forerunner near Nafpaktos. Saint Theonas followed him. With his own eyes he saw the divine light that had appeared, wondrously, above the monastery every evening for days before James arrived. There Theonas was also granted the grace to become a spiritual confessor, by written authorization from Akakios, the bishop of Arta. When Saint James was taken to the prison at Trikala on his way to martyrdom, the other disciples lost heart and returned to the Monastery of the Forerunner. But Saint Theonas did not shrink back. Out of great love, he stayed beside his beloved teacher, suffering with him and sharing in his struggle through the torments of martyrdom. There in prison, James was asked by his disciples Dionysios and James the deacon, who were imprisoned with him, “Father, tell us: what will become of the community and the brothers after your death?”
He answered them in a mysterious, prophetic way: “If God wills, when we are freed from the hands of the king, we shall go first to the Patriarch and then to Great Wallachia. Once we have gone there, we shall fear no more temptations. After that, we shall come from above and you from below, and we shall meet near Thessaloniki. Then, with God’s help, we shall find a monastery in which to live, and we shall be inseparable both in this age and in the age to come.” Here is the meaning of his riddle: the Patriarch is the Lord Jesus Christ, and Great Wallachia is Paradise, where the souls of the righteous dwell.
His words about some coming from above and others from below foretold what would happen next. After Saint James was martyred with his disciples James and Dionysios, his surviving disciples, especially Saint Theonas, left the place where they had been living and went to Simonopetra Monastery on the Holy Mountain. When a priest told them that the holy relics of the martyrs were buried near Adrianople, they sent men to open the graves and retrieve the relics. Then they left the Holy Mountain and went near Thessaloniki. There they found the Monastery of Saint Anastasia, then very small, very old, and in ruins, and rebuilt it from its foundations.
They built enough cells for the brothers, and by the grace of Christ as many as 150 brothers gathered there to live in community. Saint Theonas was their abbot and leader. The riddle also meant that his living disciples would come from Nafpaktos and the Holy Mountain, places farther south, while the holy relics of the martyrs would come from Adrianople, farther north. So all would be gathered in that monastery and remain inseparable: the living and those who had fallen asleep, together in this life through their bodies, and in the life to come through their souls. And so it happened.
Saint James appointed Theonas to succeed him and lead the other disciples, as we see in the letter he sent them near the end of his life. Among other things, he wrote: “Submit to Father Theonas as you would to me, and confess even your logismoi, your intrusive thoughts, to him.” Those few words are enough to show us that Saint Theonas was his teacher’s equal in virtue. The same Life of Saint James tells another story. A priest-monk named Barlaam once disobeyed an instruction from Saint Theonas, the monastery’s abbot, and became possessed by a demon.
The demon tormented him terribly. As many as thirty times a day it convulsed him, making him roll on the ground and foam at the mouth. Seeing this, the brothers bound his hands and feet and waited for the abbot, Saint Theonas, to return from Thessaloniki. When he arrived and learned what had happened, he performed the blessing of water with a relic of Saint James. He gave the sick man some of the blessed water to drink and healed him by the grace of God and the intercessions of his teacher. Once he had firmly established the community and arranged for his disciples to live according to the model and ascetic teachings of Saint Basil the Great, Theonas built a hermitage. From time to time he withdrew there from the monastery to live in hesychia, inner stillness, praying alone with God.
Then he would return to his disciples, comfort them with his godly teaching, and strengthen them in the struggles of monastic life. There are two great commandments above all others: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your soul,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Saint Theonas kept both. In the hermitage he had built, he communed with God and burned with love for Him. This shows that he loved God with all his soul and all his mind. And the monastery he built, through which he saved countless souls, shows his love for his neighbor. He kept those two commandments on which all the Law and the Prophets depend,
and brought that love to perfection. When the blessed Saint became bishop of Thessaloniki, who could recount all his labors? He added fast to fast, vigil to vigil, and prayer to prayer. As the Apostle says, he became all things to all people, seeking only to win over all the Christians entrusted to him and to guard his flock from the schemes of wolves, both visible and invisible. He was a true shepherd and a faithful disciple of Christ, the Chief Shepherd. Even if we had no other testimony that Theonas is a Saint, the honor God Himself bestowed on him after death would be enough: He made
his holy relic incorrupt, sound, and whole. We see it shining with a golden hue, giving off a spiritual fragrance and working miracles for those who call upon him in faith. This honor alone is enough to show that Theonas was truly a Saint, that he pleased God and lived an angelic life.
We know a tree by its fruit. In the same way, the holiness of Saint Theonas’s relic shows us that he was a Saint, equal in stature to the Saints of old, and that he lived a holy life beyond ordinary human measure. This honor, which God bestowed on him in a real and tangible way, surpasses any praise the most gifted speakers in the world could offer. His sacred and venerable relic remains whole to this day at the Monastery of Saint Anastasia. It gives off an indescribable fragrance and brings miracles and healings to those who come in faith. The venerable fathers of the monastery celebrate his memory on the fourth Sunday of Lent with an all-night vigil and a feast attended by many Christians. In this they follow the example of Saint Gregory Palamas, celebrated on the second Sunday of Lent. Theonas succeeded Gregory on the episcopal throne and was his equal in virtue and holiness.
End.
People seek God and long to meet Him, apart perhaps from those who are indifferent. Even those who fight against God reveal this longing, for no one fights against something he believes does not exist. Yet people often take the wrong path in trying to meet God. Some seek Him through intellectual arguments. Others, like Thomas, want to grasp Him with their senses. Most have no idea what God is. First, we should know what the Fathers teach: God’s essence, His divine ousia, cannot be shared in. It remains completely unknown to us.
But we can share in His divine uncreated energies, and through them come to know God. Meeting God is also a moment of judgment for us. The sun melts solid ice into water, while it dries soft mud until it is hard as stone. So when a person meets God, He becomes a joyful light to one who has been cleansed of sin, but a consuming fire to one who remains impure. This happens when we receive Holy Communion.
When someone receives Holy Communion unworthily, it becomes a cause of judgment or condemnation. But for someone who has prepared properly, it becomes light. In the life to come, too, everyone will receive the rays of God’s love. For the righteous they will be light, shining upon them; for unrepentant sinners they will be a fire that consumes them. So the way to know God as a gentle, joyful light is the way of purification and humility. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God,” said the Lord. Whoever, like Saint Theonas, is unafraid to become foolish and childlike will enter the Kingdom of God and share communion with Him. That communion is essential to knowing God.
To know God, to know Christ, is the salvation of the human person.
