Saint Theodore, whom we celebrate today, was born during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, who ruled from 527 to 565. His birthplace was Sykeon, a village in Galatia in Asia Minor, and so he became known as Theodore of Sykeon. His father was Cosmas, an imperial envoy, and his mother was a woman named Mary who worked as a prostitute. Though the blessed Theodore was born outside Holy Matrimony, he rose to the highest degree of virtue. He was counted worthy to become a bishop and, because of his many virtues and great gifts of the Holy Spirit, to be numbered among the Saints of the Church. At Holy Baptism he received the name Theodore. At eight years old he was sent to a teacher to learn his letters. By the grace of God, he made rapid progress and grew skilled in every virtue. A devout and virtuous cook named Stephen worked at Theodore’s family inn. Stephen gave the money he earned to churches. He made sure to pray morning and evening, and during Great Lent he fasted until late in the day, eating nothing but a little boiled wheat.
Stephen had a deeply good influence on those around him, especially Theodore. Theodore fasted with him and went with him to the churches, where he prayed and received the Holy Gifts. Theodore had great devotion to Saint George. He often visited the saint’s church on a nearby mountain and immersed himself there in the study of Holy Scripture and the Psalter. Whenever he heard of a holy person, he hurried to meet him, to learn how he lived and to gather the fruits of his virtues. At fourteen, Theodore decided to devote himself to ascesis, the ascetic life. He went to that church of Saint George and began to...
live there with strict fasting and many other hardships and privations. He became so devoted to the worship of God that he was counted worthy to cast out demons, heal the sick by God’s grace, and even raise a dead child. Later he climbed higher up the mountain, dug out a cave, sealed its entrance, and lived there for two years in fasting and prayer. When Bishop Theodosios of Anastasiopolis heard of this, he visited Theodore and ordained him first a reader, then a deacon, and finally a priest. As Theodore studied the Holy Scriptures, he longed to visit the Holy Land, and he did so.
At the Monastery of Choziba, he asked for and received the angelic monastic habit. He returned to his homeland and undertook still greater ascetic struggles. God also counted him worthy of even greater gifts. By the grace God had given him, even wild animals grew tame. For three years running, a bear came to him, received a blessing from his hand, and went away without harming anyone. Through his prayer, a swarm of locusts that had caused great destruction disappeared. A sorcerer named Theodotos sent demons to harm the Saint, but despite their repeated attempts...
they returned having accomplished nothing. They confessed that a great divine flame came from his mouth and burned them. Theodotos then put a deadly poison in a fish and, through some envious people, persuaded the venerable Theodore to eat it. Theodore blessed the fish first and came to no harm. Theodotos was ashamed, and this brought him to metanoia, to repentance. He confessed his evil intent to Theodore, burned his books, and, after fasting and giving alms, received divine Baptism. By the grace God had given him, the Saint worked many miracles, and many people received his help.
Some of those he helped stayed near him, serving in various ways or becoming monks. When he visited the Holy Land a second time to venerate its holy places, a severe drought threatened people and animals. They held processions and prayed, but still the rain they longed for did not come. The Patriarch, monks, and leading men of the city came to the Saint and begged him to ask God to send rain. He told them to hold a procession. After he prayed at length, rain began to pour down. After the death of Bishop Timothy of Anastasiopolis...
the clergy and laypeople of the city asked the Archbishop of Ancyra to make Saint Theodore their bishop. Theodore would not even hear of it. They brought him out by force from the cave where he was living his ascetic life and took him to Ancyra. There, after many appeals from Archbishop Paul, he was ordained bishop. In Anastasiopolis he worked many miracles and shepherded the flock entrusted to him in a manner pleasing to God. He visited the Holy Land to venerate its holy places for a third time. He also went to the Lavra of Saint Sabbas, intending to stay there. He felt that his duties as bishop were drawing him away from his monastic calling.
Saint George appeared to him, however, and urged him to return to his diocese. Along the road and back in his see, Theodore continued to work miracles. He healed a man who was deaf and unable to speak, healed a paralyzed woman, and restored a child who was at the point of death. Yet his deep and undying longing was for monastic life. After eleven years of pastoral service as a bishop, he gathered the city’s leaders and told them he was resigning. Then he went to Metropolitan Paul of Ancyra and asked him to appoint a successor. Paul would not accept his resignation.
They decided to seek the intervention of Patriarch Kyriakos of Constantinople. After receiving a message from Emperor Maurice, the Patriarch instructed the Metropolitan to accept the Saint’s request and to give him his omophorion as he left his episcopal throne after a holy and blameless ministry. After his resignation, the Saint was invited to the imperial city by the Patriarch, the Emperor, and the city’s leaders so that he might bless them. There he healed many people afflicted by demons, people unable to speak, and women suffering from bleeding. By God’s grace, he restored sight to a blind child, healed a person with a disability, and cured one of Emperor Maurice’s children of a serious illness that had covered his body with sores. Yet while he healed so many people of so many ailments, Theodore himself...
The Apostle Paul had bodily ailments. Theodore, too, had a persistent wound that became irritated and bled when it rubbed against his coarse garments. He also suffered from an eye condition that returned for a month and a half each summer. Yet he thanked God for these afflictions, saying they had been given to him to bear until his death, in keeping with the words, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Following a revelation from God, Saint Theodore taught people not to bathe after receiving the Holy Gifts, as many did at that time. He rebuked those who swore oaths or blasphemed with a stern look and told them to abandon these habits.
He urged them to seek God’s forgiveness with tears, prayers, and good works. He advised everyone to avoid hostility, to love one another, and to count the things of this world as nothing. Above all wealth, they should choose God’s commandment: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39). He urged everyone to show hospitality and mercy, for through these virtues they would receive deliverance from their sins. He did the same himself, setting a good example for others. His passing shared in the joy that had graced his life. It was revealed to him that his death was near, and he received the news with gladness.
Then his beloved Saint George the Great Martyr appeared to him on horseback, leading another horse and inviting Theodore to mount it. Thus he departed this world on Monday, April 22, in the third year of Emperor Heraclius’s reign, that is, in the year 613.
The devotion and love for God of Saint Theodore of Sykeon, whom we celebrate today, are striking and deeply instructive. He lived out this longing for God, this ardent love for Him, through monastic dedication and a life of hesychia, inner stillness. His longing was so strong that he first tried to avoid even the high office of bishop. After taking it up, he still longed intensely and sought in every way to be released from its duties. Those duties were pleasing to God and blessed, yet to some extent they...
drew him away from a closer relationship with Christ. His love for God swept away every other attachment. Moved by this intense longing for God, the Saints left behind everything else in order to be united with Him: money, property, homelands, earthly and passing glory, relatives and loved ones. They left everything, even their own comfort, security, and life. Thus they undertook great ascetic struggles and endured martyrdom. Thus the passions faded, while life according to God, apatheia, freedom from the passions, and holiness flourished. How else can we explain Saint Theodore’s extraordinary self-denial and immense struggles? To do something wholeheartedly and succeed at it, people need a motive. Those who live for this world seek worldly things: wealth, glory, and the like. Those who struggle in the spiritual life may be moved by fear of God, by hope of heavenly rewards, by longing for God, or by the desire to please Him. We too should ask the source of every good gift from above...
to give us such spiritual motives, so that we may move steadily and zealously ever closer to our blessed end: God Himself.
