On September 24, our Church commemorates Saint Thecla, the Protomartyr and Equal to the Apostles; Saint Coprius; Saint Silouan the Athonite; and the miracle worked by the Theotokos on the island of Kythera, where her icon, found at Myrtidia, healed a paralyzed man.
Saint Thecla, the Protomartyr and Equal to the Apostles, whom we celebrate today, lived in the time of the Apostles. She came from Iconium in Asia Minor. Her mother, Theocleia, belonged to a prominent family. Thecla had been raised as a pagan and was engaged to a young man named Thamyris, whom she was expected to marry. Meanwhile, the Apostle Paul came to Iconium and stayed at the home of a devout man named Onesiphorus. There he began to preach the Word of God, and many people came to hear him. The steady stream of visitors caught the attention of Thecla, who was eighteen years old. She did not have the courage to enter Onesiphorus’s house
or go there by day, so one night she took advantage of the darkness and stood among the crowd near the door. What she heard touched her soul so deeply that she returned the following evening. She went a third time as well and came home late. Where had she been? Her mother had watched her, and Thecla did not deny it. Theocleia began to speak harshly against the Christian faith. Her daughter told her that no one should speak about things they had made no effort to understand. When challenged, Thecla openly said that the Apostle’s teaching had drawn her in. Her mother responded with shouting, threats, and insults.
Theocleia thought of a plan and summoned Thecla’s fiancé, Thamyris. She told him it would be best to hold the wedding at once. He gladly agreed, but Thecla refused. Her mother pleaded and pressed her in vain, and so did Thamyris. Thecla continued to attend Paul’s teaching regularly. Who was this Paul, Thamyris wondered, who had so captured Thecla’s attention and, as he saw it, turned her heart astray? Determined to find out, he watched Paul without being seen. Paul was short, bald, and unimpressive in appearance. So this little man, he thought, was the cause of all his troubles.
Thamyris had no eyes for anything higher or more spiritual. He would put Paul in his place. One day he met two of Paul’s companions, Demas and Hermogenes. Their faith was dead and fruitless, for they were filled with pride, and their hearts were full of envy and malice. Paul’s standing, and the deep respect people showed him, seem to have troubled them. They were ready to turn against him and do him harm. As we know, the Apostle Paul did not oppose Holy Matrimony; he recommended it. Yet he made no secret of his preference for virginity, while never trying to impose it. Hermogenes and Demas
consulted with Thamyris and made this the basis of their accusation against the Apostle. They claimed that he demanded celibacy, broke up marriages, undermined the family, and threatened the survival of the human race. The governor, Castelius, took up the case and placed Paul in prison. Many people visited him there, including Thecla. To make it easier for her to enter, she gave the jailer some of her valuable jewelry. The governor questioned Paul but found no wrongdoing. In fact, he enjoyed listening to him. Yet the other authorities and the crowds had been stirred up against Paul through Thamyris’s efforts.
To save Paul, Castelius expelled him from the city, first having him flogged to satisfy the crowd. Even after this, Thecla would not agree to marry. Her soul had been set aflame with love for Christ and the Gospel. Having learned the Gospel, she could not keep it to herself. She would proclaim it openly. But in those days this led to persecution and martyrdom. Why would she seek a wedding? Finally rejected, Thamyris flew into a rage. Even Thecla’s own mother was merciless toward her daughter. She would rather see her dead than Christian. One day her former fiancé, now filled with bitter hatred for her,
came at the head of a large crowd and denounced Thecla as a Christian. He accused her of working against pagan worship and bringing people to the Gospel. They demanded that she be put on trial. The governor summoned her, and she did not deny that she was working for the Gospel. It was her duty. Would they put her to death? She would count that a blessing.
For this confession, she was condemned. The crowd shouted that she should be burned. Even her own mother, beside herself with anger and forgetting that Thecla was her own child, cried out to Castelius, ‘Burn the lawless woman in the middle of the stadium, before everyone!’ A great and terrible fire was lit. The Saint stepped forward and entered it, making the sign of the Cross. But the flames,
like those in the furnace of Babylon, cooled her instead of burning her. At the same time, heavy clouds covered the sky. Lightning flashed, terrible thunder sounded, and a torrential rain fell, putting out the fire. The astonished crowds fled. Amid the confusion, Thecla slipped unnoticed out of the stadium and then out of the city. Outside Iconium, Paul was kneeling with Onesiphorus and his family, praying for Thecla’s deliverance. When she reached them, she cried out, ‘Father, Maker of heaven and earth, I bless You, for You saved me from the fire
and granted me the grace to see Paul.’ From there Thecla followed Paul to Antioch. A prominent pagan man named Alexander, a Syrian, suddenly seized her and began kissing her. She cried out, freed herself, and refused his advances. Enraged by her refusal, he approached her brazenly again. This time Thecla tore his cloak and made a fool of him by knocking the wreath of love from his head. That same day she was accused of sacrilege for throwing down the wreath. For the time being, she was placed in the care of a wealthy and noble widow named Tryphaena,
whose daughter Falconilla had recently died and who showed Thecla great love. Thecla was then tried, condemned, and taken to the amphitheater to be devoured by wild beasts. A lioness was released against the Saint, but God had tamed it, and it did her no harm at all. The next day Thecla was brought into the arena again. Lions, bears, and wild bulls were released and driven against her, but all in vain. The grace of God protected her from them all. The crowds then shouted for her release, and she was set free. From Antioch, Thecla went to Myra in Lycia, where Paul was teaching.
From there she returned to her hometown of Iconium. Her former fiancé had died, but her mother was still alive. Thecla tried to bring her to Christ, though without success. She then went to Seleucia, where she taught many people and persuaded them to receive Baptism. She also worked many miracles, especially healings. The blind regained their sight, the lame walked, the paralyzed rose, and those afflicted by demons were freed from evil spirits. Pagan physicians, whose livelihood suffered because of the Saint’s work, stirred up a new persecution against her. She died at the age of ninety on a mountain near Seleucia, where she was buried
after a long and radiant life devoted with such self-denial to the service of the Lord.
‘And this is eternal life: that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.’ Saint Thecla, whom we celebrate today, believed; through faith she came to love, and through love she came to know God. She knew Him with her whole being, beyond what her intellect alone could grasp. She experienced God. The Holy Spirit made God known to her and brought spiritual life into her. This knowledge of God, this life in Christ, is the work of the Holy Spirit. A person receives the divine work; it is not something a person can bring about. Saint Silouan the Athonite, whom we also celebrate today, writes: ‘How blessed we Christians are! What a God we have! Those who do not know God are to be pitied. They do not see the eternal light, and after death they go into eternal darkness. We know this because, in the Church, the Holy Spirit reveals to the Saints what is in heaven and what is in Hades. Oh, those poor people who have gone astray! They cannot know true joy. At times they amuse themselves and laugh, but their laughter and pleasure will turn to weeping and tribulation. Our joy, though, is Christ. Through His sufferings He has written our names in the book of life. Thank you.
In the Kingdom of Heaven we shall be with God forever, see His glory, and rejoice with Him. Our joy is the Holy Spirit, so sweet and pleasing. He bears witness in the soul to salvation. Oh, brothers and sisters, I ask and implore you in the name of God’s mercy: believe in the Gospel and in the witness of the Holy Church. Then, even here on earth, you will taste the blessedness of Paradise. Truly, the Kingdom of God is within us. The love of God grants Paradise to the soul. Many princes and rulers gave up their thrones when they came to know the love of God. And this is understandable, for the love of God
burns like fire. By the grace of the Holy Spirit, the soul’s joy moves it to tears, and nothing on earth can compare with it.’
