Saint Spyridon, whom we celebrate today, lived in the fourth century after Christ, during the reigns of Constantine the Great and his son Constantius. He came from the great island of Cyprus. This great father of our Church was, from his youth, a very simple, humble, and merciful man. At first he was a shepherd. Full of love, he welcomed everyone into his home and offered whatever hospitality he could. He washed the feet of weary travelers, set food before them, and served them in everything with the humility of a faithful servant.

Along with humility and modesty, he had self-control, gentleness, and many other virtues. He was married to an honorable and virtuous woman. They had children, whom he raised in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. After his wife died, he lived a devout life, free from fleshly pleasure and desire. He studied the law of God and practiced every virtue to a degree few attain. These virtues earned him everyone's respect and love. After many appeals, he agreed to be ordained a priest. He was a true priest of the Gospel, and God granted him many abundant gifts. He healed various illnesses, gave sight to the blind, and drove out evil spirits

and performed many other miracles through the grace of God, which worked with him. In the reign of Constantine the Great, after that devout emperor defeated his enemies and established his sole rule, the bishopric of Trimythous in Cyprus became vacant. Who should be chosen to fill it? Clergy and people together called for Spyridon, and he proved fully worthy of this high ministry. He was a father to his priests and his people, a protector of the weak, a comforter of those who mourned, and a guardian and preacher of Christian truth. Though he was a bishop, he remained simple and humble. Indeed, he used to say that without this humility,

I would be neither a bishop nor even an ordinary Christian. As he traveled through his diocese, he always went on foot; he never wished to ride a horse. Even so, he found great grace with God. Once, because of the people's sins, God allowed such a drought in Cyprus that severe famine and widespread death followed. Another Elijah was needed to open the heavens through prayer. The wondrous Spyridon became that Elijah. Grieving for his perishing flock, he prayed with deep sorrow, and so much rain fell that the whole island was watered. The earth bore fruit, and the people were delivered from their suffering.

A farmer found himself in great need. He went to a rich man and asked to borrow wheat, promising to repay it with interest at harvest time. The man told him that without money he would not give him a single grain. With no other hope, the poor farmer turned to Saint Spyridon. The next day, the saint gave him a piece of gold shaped like a snake and said, “Go, pledge this gold and get what you need.” The rich man immediately gave him the wheat he needed. The farmer sowed it, gathered a rich harvest, met his needs, and paid his debt. Then he took back the golden snake and returned it to the saint.

Spyridon placed it on the ground and prayed, and the gold became a living snake again, as it had been before he turned it into gold. On another occasion, a virtuous friend of the saint was falsely accused of a grave offense, and the governor condemned him to death. When the saint heard, he set out to save him. But he had to cross a river that had flooded, and there was no way across. So, in the name of the Master of All, he commanded the river to stand still. It did, and he and his companions crossed. When the governor heard what had happened, he was amazed. Out of reverence for the saint, he freed his friend. Then, in the year 325,

the First Ecumenical Council met in Nicaea of Bithynia. There, the 318 God-bearing fathers condemned the heresy of Arius and proclaimed that the Son of God is consubstantial, of one essence, with God the Father. Among the Orthodox, Saint Spyridon stood out: great in virtue, though simple in learning. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he proclaimed that the Holy Trinity, though three persons, is one God and one essence. He demonstrated this by taking a clay tile. He made the sign of the precious Cross and said, “In the name of the Father.” At once, the fire that had baked the tile rose upward.

At the words “and of the Son,” the water used to form it flowed downward. At “and of the Holy Spirit,” earth remained in his hand. Everyone was amazed, and many returned to Orthodoxy. The ordinary people and the bishops revered the saint, and the emperor, too, marveled at him and honored him greatly. When the saint returned to Cyprus, he was deeply grieved to find that his daughter Irene had died. A few days later, a woman came to him in tears. She said she had given his daughter a precious jewel for safekeeping and had not been able to retrieve it before Irene died. The saint searched the whole house but could not find it. He went to his daughter's grave and, as though she were alive, asked where she had put the woman's jewel.

She answered in a living voice, “I have kept it in such and such a place, Father.” There it was found, to everyone's amazement. Saint Spyridon was also granted the grace to heal Emperor Constantius, the son of Constantine the Great, of a serious illness that no physician could cure. The emperor wanted to thank him and offered him a great deal of gold, but the saint refused it. The emperor insisted, and at last the saint accepted it, only to distribute all the money to the poor soon afterward. As the saint was leaving the palace, a man who loved Christ took him home as his guest. There, a woman brought her dead infant and laid the child at his feet,

asking him to raise the child to life. The saint prayed fervently, and God heard his prayer and raised the dead child. But when the mother saw her child alive, she died from overwhelming joy. Just as the saint had restored the infant to its mother, so he restored the mother alive to her child. He prayed to the One who gives life to the dead and said to her, “In the name of the Lord, arise.” At once she rose as if from sleep and took her child in her arms. Saint Spyridon knew beforehand that his death was near. On December 12, in the year 348, at the age of seventy-eight,

he entrusted his holy soul to the hands of God. His holy relics remained in the earth for many years, while miracles continued to take place. When they were brought up, they were found whole and incorrupt. They remained in his homeland until the seventh century. Later, because of barbarian raids, they were taken to Constantinople and, after its fall, to Corfu. There they remain to this day, working countless miracles. The saint delivered the island from famine and plague and gave sight to the blind, among many other wonders. In remembrance of such events, his holy relics are carried in four processions each year. At one time, the admiral of the Venetian fleet,

Andreas Pisani, who governed the island, decided to set up an altar in the saint's church so that a Roman Catholic priest could celebrate the liturgy there every day. But how could this champion of Orthodoxy allow clergy of another confession, whom the account calls heretics, to serve in his church? The saint appeared twice to Pisani in a dream and ordered him not to go ahead with his plan. Pisani would not listen, for he trusted his own theologian, who said that the dream was from the devil. Then, one night, the gunpowder magazine in the old fortress caught fire, and many Latins were killed. Pisani was caught between two pieces of timber that came together,

crushing his neck, and his theologian was found dead. A Venetian saw three flames come out of the bell tower of Saint Spyridon's church and move toward the citadel. At once the gunpowder magazine exploded. That same night in Venice, lightning struck Pisani's portrait and burned it completely, without harming anyone else. Such was the divine Spyridon's defense of the faith, even after death. Wondrous is God in His saints.

Saint Spyridon, whom we celebrate today, was and remains a bearer of God and a worker of miracles. He had been cleansed of the passions and adorned himself with holy virtues. Foremost among them were his simplicity and humility, virtues he seems to have possessed from the beginning and kept until the end of his life. Perhaps his humble work as a shepherd helped him in this, as did the fact that he never sought worldly wisdom. The Lord told us, “Unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven.” Unless we become simple and humble like children,

we cannot receive the grace of God. Simplicity and humility open the soul and make it receptive to God's grace. The difficulty begins when a person does more than learn much: when he becomes carried away by what he knows and starts to trust only what his mind can grasp, his own judgment, and, more generally, himself. Then his soul closes itself to the grace of God. May God grant that the abundance of knowledge in our age deepen our humble knowledge of ourselves and our complete dependence on Him, so that we may always be more open to His grace.
