Sophronius was born in Damascus, Syria, probably around AD 575. His devout parents were named Plinthas and Myro. God had given him rare gifts, especially intelligence and a love of learning, and he acquired a great deal of knowledge. More important, though he lived in the city, he cultivated virtue and devoted himself to ascesis, the ascetic discipline practiced by those in the desert. According to one account, Sophronius taught rhetoric while still very young. Before long, however, his calling to theology and the life of the Church took hold of him, and he went to Jerusalem.
He entered the Monastery of Saint Theodosius. There he found, as he had hoped, a man named John Moschus, well versed in both Christian and secular learning, and became a monk. He learned from that blessed John what John knew best, while sharing his own knowledge in return. Both men of God longed to visit the renowned monasteries of the East and meet the great ascetic fathers of their time, so that they might be spiritually edified by them. They traveled through Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, Cyprus,
Samos, and many other places where there were monasteries and renowned fathers. In Alexandria they met the Patriarch of the time, the most holy John the Merciful, and formed a close friendship with him. There Sophronius developed an eye condition and was miraculously healed by Saints Cyrus and John, the wonderworkers. In return, they asked him to record the miracles they performed each day. The saint gladly agreed and wrote them down as they wished. Sophronius and the blessed John Moschus remained in Alexandria until 614. After that,
they went to Rome. There Moschus, with Sophronius's help, wrote the celebrated Spiritual Meadow, a book of wonderful accounts from the lives of the venerable fathers. While these venerable fathers were in Rome, John the Merciful, a man of great virtue, died in 619. When Sophronius heard the news, he composed a eulogy for him. In it he revealed the boundless treasure of mercy and compassion in that blessed man's soul, and mourned his loss. The blessed John Moschus wrote the life of Saint John the Merciful,
but he did not live to finish it. He too died that same year, and Sophronius completed the work. After John Moschus died, Sophronius took his holy remains, following John's wish that he be buried on Mount Sinai, and went to Palestine. Arab raids prevented him from reaching Sinai, so he buried him at the Monastery of Saint Theodosius the Cenobiarch. Seeing the Church troubled by the teachings of the Monophysites and other heretics, Sophronius then went to Alexandria.
He tried to persuade Pyrrhus, the Patriarch of the time, who was working toward union with the Monophysites, to remain faithful to what the holy Fourth Ecumenical Council had established at Chalcedon. When Pyrrhus would not be persuaded, Sophronius went to Constantinople to see Patriarch Sergius and Emperor Heraclius. He found that they held the same views and were trying to alter Orthodox doctrine by teaching that Christ had only one will. Sophronius rebuked them sternly before everyone, then returned to Jerusalem deeply saddened. Yet his struggles were not in vain. Powerful as the heresy was at the time, Orthodoxy triumphed.
The holy Sixth Ecumenical Council, which met later, in 680, anathematized the heretics Sergius, Pyrrhus, Paul, and Peter, all Patriarchs of Constantinople, along with Honorius of Rome, Cyrus of Alexandria, and the heretics who stood with them. It vindicated Sophronius, the most holy Maximus the Confessor, and the other defenders of Orthodoxy. Even before he was ordained a bishop, Sophronius had fought courageously for Orthodoxy. Following the example of the holy Apostles, he traveled through East and West, strengthening the Orthodox in the truth of the faith and denouncing the heretics of the time: the Monophysites, the Monothelites, and many others.
At that time, Saint Modestus, the Patriarch of Jerusalem and a man of great virtue, departed to the Lord. Through the illumination of the Most Holy Spirit, Sophronius, that tireless preacher of Orthodoxy, was called to ascend the illustrious throne of Jerusalem. Clergy and people, rulers and citizens of the Holy City, judged him worthy to lead the Patriarchate of Jerusalem in those difficult days, when Arabs threatened the city from without and various heretics threatened it from within. His extraordinary virtue and rare gifts—his keen mind, learning,
discernment, and more—brought Sophronius, already so worthy before his ordination, to the throne of the mother of the Churches in 634. Once this lamp had been set on its stand to give light to everyone in the house, who could tell how carefully and with what labor he shepherded the flock God had entrusted to him? He struggled spiritually against the Monothelite heretics, who were then growing in number in other Churches. At times he refuted them with Holy Scripture and the traditions of the Apostles and Fathers; at other times he overcame their arguments through his own teaching. But Sophronius also
had to face a harsh war brought by invaders. The Arabs surrounded Jerusalem and subjected it to countless hardships and dangers. Sophronius had long foreseen the attack and organized the city's defense, enabling it to hold out for many months. In the end, because of the sins of the people, the Arabs captured the city in 637. Even in those bitter days for the Church of Jerusalem, Sophronius acted wisely. He secured terms that did much to safeguard the Church and its holy sites. These agreements made it possible
for the Patriarchate to endure throughout the long centuries of Arab rule in Palestine. They also secured the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate's authority over the holy sites, which, under those agreements, continues to this day. Saint Sophronius wrote ten homilies on feasts and biblical figures, Church hymns, and lives of saints, including that of Saint Mary of Egypt. Having lived well and in a way pleasing to God, and having guided many onto the straight path, this blessed man was, in the words of the prophet Jeremiah, a mouth for God. After shepherding Christ's flock for three years and three months, this great Father and Patriarch departed in peace to the Lord
on March 11, 638.
Sophronius loved truth in both belief and action. He loved the truth who is Christ. He loved the truth of Orthodoxy, both as doctrine and as a way of life: right belief lived out in right action. He embraced the truth that he was created by God and belonged to God. That is why he gave himself wholly to Christ. As we said, Saint Sophronius had many gifts, both natural and acquired. He was intelligent, eager to learn, and possessed of great knowledge. But he did not keep these gifts for himself or use them deceitfully or for his own gain. Everything he was, everything he had, he gave to God. It all belonged to God, and he gave it back to Him. He did not treat it as his own or claim it for himself. Every person should feel and act this way, especially a Christian. The Apostle Paul tells us: “You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.” And Saint Sophronius glorified God in body and spirit, with his whole being. Every person should live in the truth and be truthful in thought, word, and deed. And because Christ Jesus is true God, and because
Christ is also true man, no one can live in the truth without a relationship with Christ, without longing for Him, giving oneself to Him, and being united with Him as one. He is the way, the truth, and the life—true life and our salvation.
