On the seventeenth of September, our Church commemorates the holy martyrs Faith, Hope, and Love, and their mother Sophia. We also commemorate the holy martyrs Agathokleia, Maximos, Theodotos, Asklepiodote, Lucia the Widow and her son Enkeminianos, Theodote of Nicaea, Charalambos, Panteleon and their companions, the most glorious Fathers Theios and Elias, the holy hieromartyrs Pileus and Nilus, bishops, the one hundred Egyptian martyrs, the fifty martyrs from Palestine, and the holy hieromartyrs Herakleides and Myron, bishops of Tamasos in Cyprus.
We also commemorate Venerable Anastasios of Peristerona in Cyprus.
Saint Sophia, whom we celebrate today, lived in the time of Emperor Hadrian, who reigned from AD 117 to 138. She was devout in faith, noble by birth, and modest and virtuous in character. She came from a large city in Italy. Widowed while still young, she had three daughters: Faith, Hope, and Love. Circumstances brought them to the great city of Rome. There Saint Sophia lived a virtuous life and taught her daughters to fear God and long for His kingdom.
She taught them to live up to their names. Word of them spread through the city, and people praised the gifts they possessed in soul and body. But the devil, who hates all that is good, stirred up Antiochos, the ruler of the city, to report their faith to the emperor. He accused them of despising the gods and disobeying imperial commands. When Hadrian heard this, he angrily ordered them brought before the court. They heard the order and willingly prepared for their struggle for Christ, united in purpose and resolve. They appeared before the tribunal, armed with the sign of the life-giving Cross.
Their spirits were brave and their faces radiant. After the usual questions, the judge saw how firm they were in their faith. He handed them over to a noblewoman of senatorial rank named Palladia, so that she might persuade them to abandon their faith, and ordered her to bring them back for questioning three days later. Throughout those three days, their blessed mother kept teaching and encouraging her daughters. She urged them to hold fast to their confession of Christ until the end, to place all their courage in Jesus Christ, and to trust in His help from above, so that they might receive unfading crowns
and enjoy unspeakable glory and delight in His heavenly kingdom. After the three days had passed, the young women were brought alone before the governor. He thought that, because they were so young, flattery and promises would easily persuade them to offer sacrifice. So the judge began with sweet words, then threatened them, even with death. But these brides of Christ, Sophia’s beloved daughters, answered that they desired eternal blessings and the heavenly Bridegroom. They rejected the rewards this world could offer. His threats did not frighten them; they filled them with joy, for they said
that nothing was sweeter for Christians than to suffer for love of Christ. The one thing that would grieve them was if their youth kept him from putting them to the severest trials. Seeing their firm resolve, the judge decided to question the saints one by one. He brought forward the eldest, twelve-year-old Faith, and urged her to sacrifice to the false goddess Artemis. She refused completely. The ruler ordered her to be beaten mercilessly with rods and then subjected to other tortures. Through divine grace, the young martyr remained unharmed, glorifying God and singing His praises.
The tyrant saw that no punishment had any effect on the saint. Her endurance was even leading the pagans to marvel at the power of Christ. So he ordered her beheaded. When she heard the sentence, she was filled with joy. She embraced and said farewell to her sisters and her mother. Her mother gave thanks to the Lord, who had counted her worthy to see her daughter offered to Him as a spotless sacrifice. Blessed Faith bowed her head and joyfully accepted death by the sword. Promises and threats were then used against the middle sister, ten-year-old Hope. But she said she was eager to follow her elder sister’s glorious path, and she proved herself fully her equal. The order was given to scourge the martyr with oxhide whips. When she paid no heed to this torment, they were ordered to throw her into a blazing furnace. But the God who had kept her sister unharmed through every trial also kept her untouched by the fire. Standing in its midst, the saint thanked Jesus Christ and asked Him to keep her faithful in her confession to the end. At the sight of this, the tyrant grew still more furious. He ordered her to be hung up and her flesh torn with iron claws.
As they tore at her, her face shone brighter than the sun, and a wondrous fragrance came from her body. Then came the order to throw the saint into boiling pitch and resin. But as the bronze vessel was heated, it began to melt. Its contents spilled out and burned many of the pagans. The senseless judge saw that he could not persuade the saint and that she welcomed her tortures as occasions for joy. Still refusing to relent, he sentenced her to death by the sword. And so she too was counted worthy to receive the radiant crown of martyrdom through beheading.
Then came the turn of Love, who was only nine years old. Her mother encouraged her with even greater warmth and fervor. “Lord, Lord,” she said, “I ask nothing more of You than this: receive my third and last daughter also, adorned with the crown of martyrdom.” The little girl went boldly before the tribunal. With the wisdom and courage that the Holy Spirit gives even to children, she told the astonished tyrant
that he would soon learn that she had sprung from the same root as her sisters. She would prove no less brave than they had been, and with Christ’s help she would endure all the more, though she was the youngest. Unable to bear the martyr’s boldness, the tyrant ordered her to be whipped fiercely with leather straps. But the grace of God that had strengthened her sisters also kept her from pain and harm. Then they lit a furnace and heated it. As soon as the order came to throw her in, she leapt into the fire herself. The flames left the martyr untouched but spread and burned many pagans, including, in part, the judge himself. Instead of taking heed and marveling at the power of Christ, he ordered the saint’s body pierced with sharp nails. Finally,
when the Lord had kept her unharmed through this torment as well, the judge ordered her beheaded. The little martyr heard the sentence with joy. She thanked the Lord and asked Him to preserve her mother’s life long enough to see to their burial. That blessed mother sent her last daughter on her way with words of encouragement, and the girl willingly accepted death for Christ. Blessed Sophia gathered her daughters’ remains and buried them with tender love and reverence. Her soul longed to go where they now shone, crowned with glory. And her fervent desire was fulfilled. Three days later,
the Lord received her as she embraced her daughters’ tomb. Devout Christians placed her remains there beside theirs. Just as, while they lived on earth, they had shared one purpose and seemed to be one soul, so after death their bodies lay together on earth and their souls were together in the heavenly kingdom, rejoicing and glorifying the Holy Trinity.
“We offer You what is Yours, from what is Yours, in all things and for all things.” In today’s account of the saints, we saw Saint Sophia offer God what was most precious to her: herself and her dearly loved daughters. And the daughters themselves offered their whole lives as a sacrifice pleasing to Christ. They offered themselves with joy. We might say that here we see the Eucharistic way of life in its fullness. In such an offering, we do not lose what we give, or simply receive its equal in return. We receive far more, infinitely more. In the Divine Liturgy,
we offer the artos, the bread, and the wine, the basic gifts that stand for our whole life. Even these are God’s, not ours. In offering them, we offer our whole being and our whole life. Through this offering, they are sanctified and become the Body and Blood of Christ. They are then given back to those who offered them, for their sanctification. What we offer is not lost or merely preserved; its worth is increased beyond measure. We are called to continue this Eucharistic offering outside the church building too, making our whole life a Holy Eucharist. Remembering God’s gifts, we give Him thanks not only with words of prayer, but by offering our being and our life to Him, living and dying for Him. Only in this way can we be sanctified and saved. What is offered to God can be sanctified and, being sanctified, saved. This is what the saints we celebrate today—Sophia, Faith, Hope, and Love—show us. This is what all the saints of our Church show us. This is what our Lord shows us: “Whoever loses his life for My sake and the Gospel’s will save it.” Such a loss is truly to our benefit and truly brings salvation. That is why it can…
it must be done with joy.
