Today, September 18, our Church commemorates Saint Eumenios, Bishop of Gortyna and Wonderworker; the holy martyrs Sophia, Irene, and Ariadne; the holy martyr Castor; and Saint Romylos.
Our God-bearing father Romylos was born around AD 1300 in Vidin, a city on the Danube. His parents were devout and God-fearing: his father was Greek, and his mother was of Bulgarian descent. At his holy Baptism he was named Raikos. When he was old enough, his parents entrusted him to a devout teacher to learn the sacred writings. Intelligent and thoughtful, he learned them quickly. Everyone admired and praised him, and because he showed such wisdom at an early age, they called him the Child Elder. As Raikos grew out of childhood and entered his youth,
he began to think of leaving this vain world for a monastery, where he could cultivate virtue and be counted worthy of the spiritual blessings of heaven. His parents were less spiritually minded and did not know the purpose God had placed in their son's heart. They wanted him to marry, and they told him so. But Raikos longed for eternal blessings. He secretly left his parents and his homeland and went to the monastery of the Theotokos (God-bearer) Hodegetria near Tarnovo. There he bowed before the abbot, underwent a period of testing, and was tonsured a monk. He received the name Romanos, and the head of the monastery assigned him
to care for the Church and everything in it. He carried out this service eagerly, reverently, and with the fear of God for three full years. At that time, Saint Gregory of Sinai had left the Holy Mountain and come to those borderlands. He had built a monastery in the wilderness of Paroria, where he brought light to many through his God-inspired teaching, his remarkable life, and his example. When Romanos heard of him, he asked for and received a blessing to go to the God-bearing Gregory and grow in virtue. He took another brother, named Hilarion, with him.
The great Gregory welcomed them both. Because Hilarion was often ill, he gave him lighter duties in the monastery. Romanos was strong, so Gregory gave him heavier and more demanding work. Romanos carried wood and stones down from the mountain, and water from the river at its foot. He made mortar for the buildings, worked in the monastery kitchen and bakery, and cared for the sick brothers. He did all this while still at the beginning of his monastic life. There was also an elder at the monastery who was ill in body but so quick-tempered that none of the fathers there
could care for him and put him at ease. The great Gregory told Romanos to serve this irritable elder, and Romanos obeyed. It was remarkable to see him attend to the elder in every need, accepting his insults and outbursts of anger. Romanos bore them willingly and with courage. The elder also had a stomach illness and could eat nothing but fish. So, to give him relief, Romanos fished in the deep pools of the nearby river and fed him with what he caught.
Because that northern region was so cold, the river stayed covered with ice and snow throughout the winter, even into April. Yet Romanos, this athlete of Christ and worker of patient endurance and obedience, took a shovel and a hammer to those frozen pools. He cleared away the snow with the shovel, broke the ice with the hammer, and stepped into the freezing water to catch fish for the sick elder. He did all this for the sake of the commandment of love, hearing Christ the Master say, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” And so Romanos
was a martyr in his willing resolve, like the holy Forty Martyrs who suffered in the freezing lake at Sebaste. He did not die in the water as they did. Yet he would never have entered those icy pools had he not been ready to face death. This is what it means to lay down one’s life out of love for one’s neighbor. In time, the elder reposed in the Lord. After him, Gregory of Sinai also departed to the eternal dwellings. Romanos, whom everyone now called Kalo-Romanos, or Good Romanos, then became obedient to another elder: the spiritual father of his close companion Hilarion.
When raiders came into those borderlands, the monks left and went to the city of Zagora. They settled in a place called Vogris. Before long, this elder too, Romanos’s protector, reposed in the Lord at an advanced age. Romanos grieved deeply. From then on, he lived in obedience to Hilarion, who was older and had spent more years as a monk. Together they returned to the wilderness of Paroria when they learned that the raiders had been driven away. There, in the wilderness and its stillness, the saint
continually spoke with God through sacred prayer, both noetic prayer and prayer spoken aloud. He was counted worthy of many great gifts, especially katanyxis, or compunction, penthos, the mourning of sin, and tears. After a long time living in obedience to Hilarion, Romanos received his blessing to live alone in stillness. Free from distractions, he could commune with God and dwell on divine vision. After many years of solitude, he received the Great Schema, the great angelic habit of monks, though his deeds had already shown his spiritual maturity. He was then given the name Romylos. But when Muslims began to trouble the monks in those borderlands, this disciple of Christ
left and went to Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain. Outside the monastery of the Great Lavra, he built a small cell and lived there with his disciple Gregory, who later wrote his life. He continued his beloved ascetic discipline and hesychia, his life of inner stillness. When the fathers of the Holy Mountain learned that he had come,
they went to him for spiritual benefit. Saint Romylos counseled them on what they should do to save their souls. He taught them to keep the three powers of the soul undefiled: the power of reason, the spirited power, and the power of desire. They left edified and returned to their homes. But these visits interrupted Romylos’s stillness and his communion with God.
So he and his disciple went to live farther north. But a city set on a hill cannot be hidden. The hill is the height of virtue: those who climb it through a virtuous life shine like light. People came to Romylos again for spiritual benefit, fulfilling the saying, “The more a person flees human praise, the more it pursues him.” When war broke out between the Turks and the Bulgarians and Serbs, many monks left the Holy Mountain because of the turmoil. Romylos likewise went to Arvlon, probably in Albania. There he found people who were uneducated and rough, accustomed to murder and robbery,
and astray in the faith. With words full of grace, the saint called them to the right faith and to a life lived rightly. Young and old alike said, “Glory to You, O God, for sending us this light of Yours, who has led us out of darkness into light.” The Lord had sent him there to set many souls on the right path. From there, following the advice of a spiritual father from the Holy Mountain, Romylos went to Ravanica in Serbia. He settled near a monastery of the Most Holy Theotokos (All-Holy). After living a short time in Serbia, Saint Romylos departed this earthly life for the eternal dwellings, placing his blessed soul in the hands of God.
His disciples laid his body, worn by so many labors, in a tomb. From that tomb comes an indescribable fragrance, and miracles take place each day for those who approach with faith and reverence. Demons have been driven out of people, the lame have been made to walk, and the blind have received their sight. Every kind of illness and every passion is healed by the grace of God, whom the saint pleased throughout his life.
Wonderful!
“You are My friends if you do what I command you.” We could say this of all the saints, and especially of Saint Romylos, whom we celebrate today.
He was a friend of Christ, and he showed his friendship and love by keeping Christ’s many commandments, however heavy they seemed and however difficult they were to carry out. We can say that his love for Christ was great. Otherwise, he could not have kept commandments that demanded so much of him, such as serving that angry, difficult elder with such self-sacrifice.
The greater the sacrifice, the greater the love. When sacrifice goes as far as death, love reaches its greatest height. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
Keeping God’s commandments is an expression of love for Him. It opens the door to His grace, allowing it to work its miracle: to bring about a blessed change and heal the soul. Then, even if a person struggled to show love at first, they can come to live it freely and readily.
My son, listen closely to my words and keep them in your heart. They are life to those who find them and healing to the whole body. If we begin to keep God’s commandments with all our heart, His grace burns away our sinful thoughts like fire and fills our hearts with the sweetness of peace and love.
His grace teaches us to think spiritually, rather than according to the flesh. We begin to have the nous of Christ, His spiritual mind, and spiritual life begins to blossom within us. “My son, keep my counsel and understanding, so that your soul may live.” “Whoever keeps a commandment will know no evil thing.” “Whoever keeps the commandment guards his own soul.” The Lord God says this to us: “Blessed is the man who listens to me, and the man who keeps my commandments.”
