On December 8, our Church commemorates Saint Patapios; the six holy Apostles of the Seventy, Sosthenes, Apollos, Cephas, Tychicus, Caesar, and Epaphroditus; and Saint Sophronios, Bishop of Cyprus.
Patapios was born in Thebes, Egypt, to devout parents. After his Baptism, he was raised with care and taught the Holy Scriptures. As he grew in years, he advanced even more in virtue. He became a true lover of wisdom, knowing how uncertain all passing things are. So, thinking and acting wisely, he left behind his homeland, wealth, relatives, the pleasures of the flesh, and the vanity of the world, and went to live in the desert. There he advanced so far in hesychia, the life of inner stillness, that he shone like a great light of virtue.
The more Saint Patapios avoided human praise, the more God glorified him and made him known. Many people gathered
around him from cities and villages to be spiritually edified. They marveled at his great ascesis, his ascetic discipline, and at the extraordinary things he accomplished with God's help. When the saint saw how many people gathered there to honor him, he left the desert and went to Constantinople. He settled in Blachernae, living as a stranger, alone, to escape human praise. There he embraced even greater hardship and ascesis. Though he lived in a body, he imitated the bodiless angels. He prayed inwardly to God and kept that indescribable beauty before his eyes. God glorified him and gave him the power to work miracles. Let us recount a few of them, so that we may see how a person can come
to keep God's commandments. There was a devout young believer who had been blind from birth and could see nothing at all. Hearing of the saint's virtues and remarkable life, he was led to him and asked to be healed. Saint Patapios felt deep compassion for him, but in his humility he did not dare attempt such a healing. Yet when he saw the young man's faith and heard his pleas, he agreed. “In the name of Christ our Master,” he said, “who gives sight to the blind and raises the dead, receive your sight.” At those words, the man who had been blind could see, and he glorified God. Another man suffered from dropsy, a swelling caused by fluid in the abdomen. His belly was greatly swollen
and he had spent all he owned on doctors, without finding any relief. When he saw that human help could not heal him, he hurried to the saint. Showing him his condition, he begged for mercy and asked him to pray to the Lord on his behalf. The saint felt compassion for him: it was not only his belly but his whole body that was swollen, causing him pain beyond description. First, the saint prayed with tears to the Lord. Then he made the sign of the precious Cross over the man's belly and anointed him with oil from the vigil lamp, saying, “Christ our Master, who also healed the man with dropsy, will heal you today in His compassion.” The sick man was healed,
to the astonishment of everyone there. Another young man was tormented by a terrible demon. At times he tore his clothes; at others he fell into pits or over cliffs; and at still other times he fell into water, putting his life in danger. Once, the demon dragged him toward the sea to drown him. By God's providence, the great Saint Patapios happened to see him.
At the sight of the saint, the demon shook the young man violently. His eyes rolled, foam came from his mouth, his teeth ground together, and he glared fiercely at the saint. With his hand, Saint Patapios traced the life-giving Cross in the air and said, “Come out, unclean spirit, and go far away into the desert. Christ commands you.” At the saint's words, the demon convulsed the young man, threw him to the ground, and came out like smoke before fleeing. With tears of joy, the young man glorified God and thanked the saint. On another occasion, a woman suffered from a painful and dreadful illness: breast cancer, with worms appearing in the wound. Seeing that she was spending her wealth on doctors in vain, she went to the great Saint Patapios. Falling at his feet, she wept bitterly and said, “Heal me, servant of God. Have compassion on me in my misery. Even before I am in the grave, worms are eating me, and they cause such terrible pain that I long for death, though everyone dreads it.” The saint answered her:
“If your faith in the Lord is pure and you do not doubt that you will be healed, then may it happen according to your faith.” She sighed from the depths of her soul and said, “I believe, Lord, that You are almighty. In Your mercy, heal my pain.” The saint told her, “Your illness is hard to cure, but faith overcomes, and hope brings healing. Go in peace; you will suffer no more.” At these words, the woman was healed. She went away rejoicing and glorifying God, proclaiming the miracle everywhere and telling everyone about the saint. From these miracles we have recounted, each of us can understand how much grace Patapios received from the Lord.
Let us now come to his repose. This great man of God adorned himself with virtues and his life with miracles. When the time came for him to leave this passing life for eternal life, all the ascetics gathered and wept at his departure. They felt that losing him would leave them all orphaned. Grieving at their parting, they said, “O Father, so dear and beloved, why are you leaving your children as orphans and going so soon to another homeland? Who will ease our sorrow? Who will now heal the wounds of our souls? What a calamity! How can we bear losing you?” Saying these and many other things, they wept and gave voice to their sorrow. But the saint showed neither fear nor any desperate clinging to life
as death approached. Instead, he said to them with joy, “My beloved children, do not bid me farewell with tears. You cause great harm both to me and to yourselves. Pray to God instead, and beseech Him for my soul. This will bring you much spiritual benefit.” With these words, he quieted their lamentation and tears. He spoke to them with great wisdom about eternal blessedness. Then he prayed for them and joyfully entrusted his blessed soul into God's hands. His holy and revered relics were buried in the venerable church of the Honorable Forerunner. At the beginning of the twentieth century, in a hermitage in the Geraneia Mountains above Loutraki, across from Corinth, now known as the Monastery of Saint Patapios,
his revered relics were discovered, untouched by the passage of centuries and giving off an indescribable fragrance. The old hermitage consists chiefly of a small church built inside a cave. In 1904, the priest who served there was tall and had difficulty carrying out his duties because the ceiling of the sanctuary was low and the space was narrow. He decided to make a little more room. As the workers dug on the western side of the church, they were astonished to discover a hidden chamber. Inside lay the holy and revered relics of Saint Patapios, intact and giving off an indescribable fragrance. His identity was made known by a piece of parchment
found with the relics, on which the saint's name was written. After the discovery of his holy relics, many miracles took place and continue to this day for those who come in faith. For this reason, a women's monastery was established there. It remains active to this day, to the glory of God and His saint.
In the account of the saint's life that we heard today, we saw Saint Patapios flee from human praise. He left the desert, where he had become well known, seeking hesychia, inner stillness, in the anonymity and obscurity of a crowded city. In general, the saints loved humility and always avoided praise. They knew the great danger it carries, so they avoided praising others as well as seeking praise for themselves. They recommended it only when someone was in danger of falling into despair.
Today, it is very rare to find someone who truly does not want praise. Most of us accept it and say thank you. We pretend we do not want it and respond with humble-sounding words, while inwardly we enjoy it and think, “Tell me more.” And if no one praises us, we feel slighted. This too is part of our human waywardness. At least let us recognize it and be humbled by our lack of humility.
