Our mother Saint Paraskeva the New came from Epivates, a town in Thrace near Selymbria, the birthplace of Saint Nektarios. Her parents were noble, wealthy, and devout. After she was born, they raised her in the instruction and counsel of the Lord, teaching her from childhood to do all that is good and pleasing to God. When she was ten, she went with her mother to a church of the Most Holy Theotokos. There she heard the Gospel passage: “Whoever wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me.” At once, love for God filled her whole being.

As soon as she left the Church, she began to live by the words of the Gospel she had heard and to deny herself. One day, while walking with her mother, she met a poor woman. Moved with compassion, she slipped away from her mother’s notice and persuaded the woman to give her the old, ragged clothes she was wearing. Paraskeva took off her own fine clothes and gave them to the poor woman, then put on the woman’s torn garments herself.

When she came home, her parents saw what she was wearing and learned what had happened. Thinking they needed to correct her because she was still a child, and to keep her from doing it again, they scolded, threatened, and beat her. But Paraskeva did not lose her love for the poor. She gave away her clothes a second time, a third time, and many times after that. Neither scolding nor blows frightened her. These were the things she did while still living in her parents’ home, early signs of the virtue and spiritual perfection she would later attain. As her longing for God burned ever more strongly in her heart, she could no longer hold back. Without telling her parents, the servants, or her relatives, she left her homeland for Constantinople. There she took in the spiritual blessings the city offered at that time: she venerated many holy churches and the relics of many Saints, and received the prayers and blessings of the holy men who lived there.

Then she crossed over to Chalcedon and went on to Heraclea, in the region of Pontus. She traveled through many places, seeking holy people who could teach her virtue and a suitable place to worship Christ and please Him. She was also trying to avoid her parents, who were searching for her from place to place in great anguish and might have stopped her. When Paraskeva reached Heraclea, she found a church of the Theotokos. She entered with spiritual joy, fell to the ground, and soaked it with her tears. She prayed to the Theotokos, who guides people toward salvation, to guide her and show her what to do. She stayed there for five full years,

cultivating every virtue and struggling through nights of prayer, constant fasting, and many tears. She slept only as much as her body needed, on the bare ground without a mattress. Above all, she was humble and modest. She cleansed her heart of desire for worldly things. All her thoughts, all her longing, and all her love were directed toward God alone. The Saint also longed to go to Jerusalem and venerate the holy places. She fervently asked Christ and His Most Holy Mother to grant her the grace to fulfill that longing. Her prayer was heard, and after she had spent much time cultivating virtue

at the church of the Theotokos, God arranged for a group of travelers to welcome her into their company. In this way she reached Jerusalem, as she had long desired. After venerating the holy places, she went to the Jordan Desert, where she found a women’s monastery and stayed there. It is hard to tell of all the temptations the devil brought upon her, or all the struggles through which she fought and defeated him. But let us mention a few things to show her ascesis, her ascetic discipline, and how she struggled. She drank only water, and even then only a little, with great self-restraint.

Her bed was a reed mat. She had just one garment, old and worn. Hymns to God and prayer were always on her lips. Above all her virtues shone love for everyone, the summit of the virtues, and humility. After spending many years in that monastery, struggling and cultivating virtue, she left at the age of twenty-five and went to Joppa in Palestine. There she boarded a ship bound for her homeland. During the voyage she faced many trials and storms at sea. At last she reached Epivates, but she did not stay there for the rest of her life. She went to Constantinople, where she venerated many holy churches and met with many holy men for her spiritual benefit.

From there she went to Kallikrateia and lived at the Church of the Holy Apostles. She continued her accustomed spiritual struggles there for two years. Having attained perfection in virtue and “the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ,” she completed the course of this passing life in holiness. She departed in peace for eternal life and made her dwelling in the heavenly tabernacles, where all who rejoice have their home. Her precious, holy body was buried with honor and lay hidden in the earth for many years, until the Saint chose to reveal it through a vision in the following way.

A man who had lived a wicked and sinful life died and was buried near the Saint’s grave. Paraskeva would not accept that his defiled body should lie beside her holy relics. So the pure and spotless bride of Christ appeared in a vision to a virtuous ascetic and said: “Take these foul-smelling remains and cast them far from me. For I am sun and light, and I cannot bear darkness and a foul smell.” In other words, she told him to remove the decaying body and take it far away from her, because, being sun and light, she could not bear to have darkness and a foul smell nearby.

The ascetic was not sure the vision had come from God. He wondered whether it had been only a dream, so he delayed carrying out the command. The Saint appeared to him a second time and said the same thing. But he still did not understand who she was or what she meant. So she appeared a third time, sternly commanded him to do as she had said, gave him her name, and pointed out the place of her grave. The hesychast awoke at once and hurried to tell the people of the town about the vision and the revelation he had received.

When they heard, they all ran to the grave as though they were about to uncover a great treasure. As they dug and drew near the holy relics, a wonderful fragrance rose from the earth. When they found them, they were astonished: after so many years underground, her body was whole and incorrupt. They reverently took up the relics and brought them with honor to the Church of the Holy Apostles. Later, the people of Kallikrateia built a church in their town dedicated to Saint Paraskeva of Epivates. How her holy relics came to be moved to Belgrade is unknown, but they remained there until 1500. From there

they were taken to Constantinople, and in 1638 to Moldavia, where they were placed in the Monastery of the Three Hierarchs in Iași, in present-day Romania. They remain there to this day.

The God who works wonders performed very many miracles when the holy relics were found, and He continues to do so today. He healed, and still heals, those who are lame, disabled, or paralyzed, along with people suffering from every kind of illness and deadly affliction. Like an inexhaustible spring, the Saint’s reliquary pours out

healing in abundance upon those who come to it in faith. This happens through the grace of the true God and our Savior Jesus Christ, who exalted her and glorified her in return.

The venerable Paraskeva truly was a Saint, and God revealed her holiness. He revealed it through her virtuous life, but above all through the miracles He worked through her. God alone is holy in Himself, by His very nature. Holiness is God’s uncreated divine energy, His uncreated grace. It is revealed in many wondrous ways and is wholly different from anything God has created, including the human person. Holiness is divine, not something that comes from human nature. No matter how good a person may be,

that goodness alone does not give them a share in God’s holiness or make them a Saint. As our Fathers teach, a human being cannot work divine things by their own power, but can receive and experience what God does. Miracles are divine works that God performs in cooperation with a person. Together with a virtuous life and Orthodox teaching, these miracles show that the person has been united with God and made holy. Thus it is God who makes a Saint and reveals that Saint to the consciousness of the Church. No person or institution makes someone a Saint. The Patriarchate simply confirms what has already become widely recognized on the basis of what God has shown. Let us give thanks to God, who raises up His Saints and gives them to us, and who desires to make us holy as well. Will we answer this most holy will of His, which brings us salvation?

δεν μετέχει αυτής της αγιότητας του Θεού, δεν μπορεί να είναι Άγιος. Ο άνθρωπος, κατά τους πατέρες μας, δεν έχει τις προϋποθέσεις για να ενεργεί τα θεία, αλλά πάσχει τα θεία. Και θεία είναι τα θαύματα τα οποία ενεργεί ο Θεός σε συνεργασία με τον άνθρωπο. Αυτά τα θαύματα σε συνδυασμό με την ενάρετη ζωή και την ορθόδοξη διδασκαλία δείχνουν ότι ο άνθρωπος έχει ενωθεί με το Θεό, έχει αγιαστεί. Έτσι ο Θεός κάνει τον Άγιο και τον δείχνει στη συνείδηση της Εκκλησίας και δεν τον κάνει κάποιο πρόσωπο ή κάποιο όργανο. Το Πατριαρχείο απλώς επικυρώνει αυτό που υπάρχει ως διάχυτη γνώμη η οποία διαμορφώθηκε βάσει αυτών που έδειξε ο Θεός. Ας ευχαριστήσουμε το Θεό που κάνει και μας δίνει τους Αγίους Του, που θέλει να αγιάσει και εμάς. Θα ανταποκριθούμε σε αυτό το Πανάγιο και Σωτήριο για μας θέλημα;
