The Holy Hieromartyr Pancratius had parents who came from Antioch. They lived during the earthly life of our Lord Jesus Christ and, together with their son Pancratius, were blessed to see Him, hear Him, believe in Him, and be baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. After the Lord’s Ascension, Pancratius met the Apostle Peter in Pontus. He gave all his possessions to the poor, freed his slaves, and went with Peter to Antioch. There the Apostle ordained him a bishop. Then, aboard the ship of a man named Lycaonides, he traveled to a place in Sicily called Falcona.
Holding the Precious Cross, the Holy Gospel, and an icon of Christ, he prayed and commanded the demons to cast the idol of the local false god Falcona, together with its entire altar, into the sea. This wonder, and the sight of the saint vested in divine light, led Boniface, the ruler of the island, to bow before him and believe in Christ. The saint blessed and instructed him in the faith, then asked him to build a church. It was completed in thirty days. When the saint served there, those inside saw a light
like lightning fill the whole church with extraordinary radiance. The idols of Taormina fell and shattered. Seeing this, the pagan priests gathered and turned against the ruler Boniface. They even drew lots and decided to sacrifice him to their false god Lyson to appease him. Boniface fled to the saint, fell at his feet, and asked for help. “Go, my child,” the saint told him. “Do not be afraid. Tomorrow I will come to the sacrifice, and then the power of Christ the Savior will be revealed.” And indeed, the next day, when everything was ready for the sacrifice, the saint appeared in his priestly vestments, carrying the Precious Cross, like a flame of fire.
First, the bonds holding Boniface came loose by themselves. Those present fell to the ground, unable to bear the radiance of the sacred vestments. Then, at the saint’s command, the enormous idol was torn from its place and fell into the sea, together with the demon inside it that posed as the god Lyson. Finally, the saint took a great serpent nearby, which fed on the blood of the sacrifices, tied it by the neck, and dragged it out of its pit. At first it hissed terribly; then it split open from top to bottom. The crowd that witnessed these wonders cried out, “Great is the God of Pancratius!” and scattered everything prepared for the sacrifice.
They threw down the carved idols and smashed them. The bishop climbed to a high place and preached Christ. Everyone there—many tens of thousands—believed in Him. Three days later, the people came, each carrying a candle and dressed in baptismal garments. That day the saint baptized twenty-four thousand people.
Great joy filled the whole city. People living near Mount Etna also heard of the saint’s miracles: he healed the lame, the paralyzed, those suffering from dropsy, those afflicted by demons, and people with every kind of illness. They came and were baptized. A woman with leprosy also came to the saint. She was a pagan priestess and falsely promised that, if Christ healed her, she would receive Holy Baptism. Although Pancratius saw through her deceit, he made the sign of the Precious Cross over her, and at once the leprosy fell away. Instead of giving thanks, however, she began to blaspheme. Because of her ingratitude, an even harsher affliction came upon her: her body filled with painful, weeping blisters. She cried out, “Have mercy on me, servant of the true God! I no longer place my hope in those defiled gods, but only in you. Ask the Lord Jesus Christ to heal me.” The saint had compassion on her. He prayed and healed her with the sign of the Cross. When she came to believe wholeheartedly, he instructed her in the faith. On the eighth day he baptized her and ordained her a deacon,
giving her the name Benedicta. She then smashed all the idols, gave away all her wealth, and served the Lord’s church with great care. The saint healed others as well and baptized many thousands more. Once, as he elevated the Holy Gifts, divine fire seemed to descend from heaven and surround him. Those who saw it were afraid and did not dare approach for Holy Communion. But he encouraged them: “Come forward, my children, and do not be afraid. This fire does not burn; it gives light.” On another occasion, while the saint served the Divine Liturgy before many thousands of people, a cloud descended and covered him, as it had covered the prophet Moses.
The crowds fell to the ground in wonder. When he elevated the Holy Bread, the cloud rose toward heaven. With the saint’s blessing, Boniface, ruler of Taormina, defeated his enemies and returned with spoils and many captives. Seeing the saint’s miracles, the captives believed in Christ and were baptized. The saint also ordained a priest and a deacon in each district to care for the souls of the faithful and build churches, which he then consecrated. At one point, a large force of enemies from Calabria in Italy, led by Achilinus, besieged the saint’s city of Taormina. On the first day, the Lord permitted the enemies to prevail,
so that the weakness of the people of Taormina would become clear. Growing distressed, they began to complain against Boniface and Pancratius, and even thought of killing them. But the good Boniface urged them not to despair and to call upon Christ the Master for help. The saint persuaded them, though with difficulty, to pray in their homes. Then he went out to face the enemy with a priest and a deacon. He wore his sacred vestments and carried the Cross and icons of Christ and the Apostle Peter. From a high place, he made the sign of the Precious Cross toward the east, west, north, and south, surrounding the city with its protection. Then he prayed for the city’s deliverance,
and they raised the Cross and the icons. At once the enemies were thrown into confusion. They began striking one another and fled, crying out. Seeing the miracle, the people of Taormina glorified the Lord and thanked the great Pancratius. Foreseeing his death, the saint sent the priest Evagrius to Rome so that the Apostle Peter might ordain him as his successor. Boniface had also gone away to war, leaving Artagarus as his deputy. Artagarus hated Pancratius deeply and sought a chance to kill him. As the saint prayed at the ninth hour, he heard a voice say, “Come, Pancratius, faithful and wise steward, and
enjoy the good things I have prepared for you.” Artagarus and his accomplices invited the saint to bless their table, or so they claimed. The saint received Holy Communion, put on his omophorion, and went. He sat down but ate nothing. After they had eaten their fill, they began to dance. They set up an idol of Scamander before the saint and worshipped it to spite him. The bishop urged them to stop worshipping the lifeless idol, but in vain. He made the sign of the Cross, and the idol fell and shattered. Enraged, they began to abuse him and beat him to death. They threw his precious body far from the palace.
When his body was later discovered where it had been thrown, the saint’s death filled the souls of those who loved Christ with sorrow, and there was great mourning. Boniface punished Artagarus and two of his accomplices for the murder.
His precious relics were placed in a golden reliquary. Several days later, however, the saint appeared in a vision and ordered that they be taken out and buried in the customary way. When the reliquary was opened, his holy body was found whole and intact, without blood or wounds, shining and giving off a sweet fragrance.
The Apostle Peter learned what had happened through the Holy Spirit and ordained Evagrius a bishop. Evagrius baptized Boniface, who gave up his temporary rule and lived in humility, obedience, and much prayer. Soon a church began to be built in the name of the Holy Hieromartyr Pancratius. Many miracles took place at his tomb: the sick were healed and demons were driven out through the irresistible grace of the Lord Jesus, to the glory of the Holy Triune God. Thank you.
One of the many things that marks people in our time is despair. It began to poison human life after that first sin in Paradise. Perhaps more than in any other age, people today feel disheartened. You seldom see joyful faces or people full of hope. Instead, almost everywhere you see sorrowful faces. People live without comfort. Everyone and everything seems to have let us down and disappointed us. And it is understandable: how can a person feel comforted, joyful, and deeply at peace while far from the Comforter and the source of all comfort?
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction.” And, “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter, to remain with you forever, the Spirit of truth.” Since God is the God of all comfort, His coming and dwelling in the heart brings comfort that is sure and strong. It is deeper than soothing words or the hope that difficult circumstances might change. That is why the saints are truly comforted, including Saint Pancratius, whom we celebrate today. They bore God within them—the living God at work
whom their souls longed for, who gave them life and joy and brought them complete rest. The saints are fully comforted. And because they bear God and are moved by the Spirit, they become a source of comfort for us as well. They strengthen us and give us rest through their life-giving words, and comfort us with their Christlike love.
Let us rejoice, for we have offspring in Zion and loved ones in Jerusalem. We have saints on earth who support us, and saints in the Church triumphant who intercede for us without ceasing. Coming to know them, growing close to them, calling on them, and following their example are powerful remedies for this age so starved of comfort.

Ένα των πολλών στοιχείων που χαρακτηρίζουν τον άνθρωπο της εποχής μας είναι και η απόγνωση, η απελπισία, η οποία αρχίζει να δηλητηριάζει τη ζωή του ανθρώπου μετά την πρώτη εκείνη αμαρτία στον Παράδεισο. Ίσως περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη εποχή σήμερα οι άνθρωποι είναι απογοητευμένοι. Δε βλέπεις εύκολα χαρούμενα πρόσωπα, ελπιδοφόρες υπάρξεις. Αντίθετα, σχεδόν παντού βλέπεις θλιμμένα πρόσωπα. Οι άνθρωποι ζουν απαράκλητα. Όλοι και όλα μας έχουν προδώσει, μας έχουν απογοητεύσει. Και είναι φυσικό: πώς ο άνθρωπος να είναι παρηγορημένος, χαρούμενος, βαθιά αναπαυμένος όταν είναι μακριά από τον Παράκλητο και την πηγή πάσης παρακλήσεως;
