Like David the Psalmist, blessed Niphon, whose memory our Church celebrates today, was consumed as if by fire with zeal to preserve Orthodoxy and the canonical order of the Russian Church. Niphon, who loved Christ, became a monk at the Lavra of the Caves while Timothy was abbot. His one concern was to adorn his soul with virtue, so he labored in fasting, vigils, prayer, and hardship. Word of his life, so pleasing to God, did not take long to spread beyond the Lavra. Thus, in 1130, when Saint John, bishop of Novgorod, after twenty years of service as a bishop,
retired to a monastery for a life of stillness, venerable Niphon was elected to succeed him. As soon as he received the grace of the episcopate from Metropolitan Michael II of Kyiv and the bishops of Russia, he devoted himself with divine fervor to strengthening Orthodoxy in his diocese.
He saw to the building of churches, so that God’s name would be glorified and his people nourished by the life of worship. In the center of Novgorod he built a stone church dedicated to the Most Holy Theotokos, and he adorned the Cathedral of Saint Sophia with beautiful icons. To the flock entrusted to him, Bishop Niphon was the good shepherd.
He taught and built up his flock through preaching, instruction in the faith, and his holy example. He always remembered the Apostle Paul’s counsel to Saint Timothy: “Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching. Persevere in these things, for by doing so you will save both yourself and those who hear you.” Many times blessed Niphon intervened to make peace in disputes among the rulers and citizens of Russian cities.
They were then caught in constant quarrels and civil strife. With wise words and prudent counsel, he always worked to reconcile the opposing sides, pursuing what makes for peace and builds people up together. During his time as shepherd, the people of Novgorod rebelled and drove out their ruler, Vsevolod. They invited Sviatoslav to take his place.
As soon as Sviatoslav took power, he sought to enter into an unlawful union. Bishop Niphon refused to perform the service of Holy Matrimony and forbade every member of the clergy in his diocese to bless it. But the ruler would not relent. He forced some priests who had come with him to Novgorod to perform the Mystery. Even then, the courageous bishop continued to rebuke Sviatoslav openly, following the example of the prophet David, who said, “I spoke of Your testimonies before kings, and I was not ashamed.” Especially notable was the blessed bishop’s concern to preserve the Russian Church’s canonical bond
with the Great Church of Constantinople. When Metropolitan Michael of Kyiv fell asleep in the Lord, Prince Izyaslav of Kyiv called a Synod of the Russian bishops and proposed that they elect the monk Clement the Philosopher as Metropolitan, without the approval and blessing of the Patriarch of Constantinople. Most members of the Synod yielded to the prince’s wishes. But Saint Niphon would not agree. Neither the prince’s power nor the decision of most of his fellow bishops could sway him. He rose and spoke the truth: “How can we dare,” he said, “to elect and consecrate a Metropolitan of Kyiv
without the blessing of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople? How can we trample on canonical order and disregard tradition? We received Baptism and grace from there. The Ecumenical Throne of Constantinople brought the light of truth, the light of Christ, to the Russian land. Through that Throne, we who were slaves of darkness became children of light, children of God and of the East. Our first Metropolitan, Michael, also came from there. Since then, we have undertaken in writing not to consecrate a Metropolitan of Kyiv without the Ecumenical Patriarch’s approval. How, then, can we break the oaths we made before God?” With Christian courage, like a true bishop of the Church of Christ,
blessed Niphon resisted the prince’s unlawful demand. He believed that this rebellion would be the beginning of the Russian Church’s falling away from Eastern Orthodoxy. Two bishops, Manuel of Smolensk and Cosmas of Polotsk, stood with venerable Niphon. The others, fearing the prince, considered the election of a Metropolitan without the Ecumenical Patriarch’s approval to be canonical. Thus Clement was consecrated and installed on the episcopal throne of Kyiv on July 27, 1147. The new Metropolitan immediately began pressuring Saint Niphon to recognize him and
serve the Divine Liturgy with him. But the bishop, zealous in his defense of canonical order, answered sternly: “You have been severed from Christ; you have fallen from grace. Whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in another way, is a thief and a robber.”
“You did not ascend the throne according to the canonical order of our Church. You are no true shepherd, but a wolf, a thief, and a robber. Therefore I will neither serve the Divine Liturgy with you nor commemorate you in the diptychs as the canonical shepherd of Kyiv, especially since you yourself do not commemorate the Patriarch of Constantinople.” Angered by the Saint’s stand, Clement urged the prince to imprison him.
Izyaslav forbade the Saint to return to his diocese and confined him to the Monastery of the Caves. There blessed Niphon recalled earlier days of ascetic discipline, prayer, fasting, and hesychia, the life of inner stillness. He prayed with gratitude to God because he had been counted worthy to suffer dishonor for His name and, for the sake of the Church’s canonical order, had been deprived of his throne like the confessing fathers of old. The following year, however, George Monomakh, prince of Suzdal, took Kyiv, drove out Izyaslav, and freed Saint Niphon. The righteous bishop returned to Novgorod with honor. Its people, who until then had been weary and scattered like sheep without a shepherd, came out with tears of joy to welcome their worthy and beloved spiritual father. The Patriarch of Constantinople also learned of the bishop’s holy struggles and his devotion to canonical order and to the Mother Church,
and sent him a letter of praise. He compared Niphon to the holy fathers of old, who had shed even their blood, when necessary, for the Orthodox Church. A few years later, the Ecumenical Patriarchate sent Metropolitan Constantine to occupy the throne of Kyiv. Full of joy, Saint Niphon came to Kyiv to meet him and to meet the
During his stay there, the Saint lived at the Monastery of the Caves. Suddenly, though, he became gravely ill. The time had come for his departure to Heaven. Three days before he fell asleep in the Lord, he told the brethren of a wondrous vision he had seen ten days earlier. “One morning I came to my cell,” he said, “to rest after the Matins service. I was growing drowsy when I seemed to find myself inside the monastery church, in the place where blessed Nicholas Sviatosha used to stand. I began to pray with tears, begging the Most Holy Theotokos to grant me the grace to see the holy founder of the church, venerable Theodosius.”
“Many fathers were gathered in the church. One of them approached me and asked, ‘Do you wish to see our venerable father Theodosius?’ ‘Yes, I do. If it is possible, show him to me,’ I replied. He took me by the hand and led me into the sanctuary. There he showed me the venerable father, alive before me. Deeply moved, I fell at his feet and venerated him. But he raised me up, blessed me, and said, ‘Welcome, my brother Niphon. From now on we shall be together forever.’ In his hand he held a scroll that read, ‘Behold, I and the children whom God has given me.’ Then I came to myself and understood that I had seen a vision sent by God
to warn me of my departure. Blessed be the name of the Lord of life and death.” Thirteen days after the vision, on April 8, the Saturday of Bright Week, the blessed Niphon fell asleep peacefully and departed to join the heavenly, triumphant flock of venerable Theodosius. His body was reverently laid in the cave beside the holy relics of the fathers who had fallen asleep in the Lord. His holy soul stands before God’s throne and intercedes for us with Christ, the great High Priest.
As we have seen, the one whose memory we celebrate today was zealous for the faith and for Orthodoxy. He bore witness to it through his words, his life, and the persecution he endured. Through the ages, all the holy fathers have shared in Christ’s sacrificial priesthood and borne witness through suffering.
They continually give themselves for their flock. Following Christ’s example, they sacrifice themselves each day for the sheep. The priesthood is not a life of pleasure and comfort, but a cross. Priests are not worldly rulers. They are shepherds who give themselves for their flock and do all they can to save the sheep.
Day by day, they care for the sick and bring them life. In the Western understanding described here, a priest urges Christians to do good works and gives them tickets, as it were, to enter Paradise and see God. According to Orthodox teaching, however, a priest helps heal the person who is sick through divine grace, so that the sight of God becomes light and life for that person. For our aim is not simply to reach God, but to reach Him healed. For someone who remains unhealed, the sight of God will be a fire of judgment. So the priest does not hand out tickets; he heals. This is the central work of the Church and her priests. Such healing calls for a complete offering of oneself, for union with others, and for love shaped by the Cross.
When someone becomes a shepherd to care for a human flock, he takes up a cross: the Cross of Christ. As Christ sacrificed Himself for the sheep, so the priest sacrifices himself for his flock. Loving Christ, he gives himself for the flock; and in giving himself for the flock, he loves Christ.
