Today, December 6, our Church commemorates Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, Bishop of Myra in Lycia; the Holy New Martyr Nicholas of Karaman, who was martyred in Smyrna in 1657; Saint Anthony the New, the Wonderworker, of Ensiisko; and Saint Nilus of Istonisit Solovnoe, by Lake Eligera, the New Wonderworker of Russia.

Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in Patara, in Lycia, Asia Minor. We do not know exactly when. His parents were devout Christians of modest means. Nicholas was their only child, and they took great care with his education. He avoided the unruly and improper talk and company of other young people. He loved to go regularly to church and spend time with sensible people, drawing spiritual benefit from them. He lost his parents while still young. Though he inherited a large fortune, he took no pride in it and did not spend it on his own comfort. Instead, he devoted himself to relieving those in need.

He helped the destitute, orphans, poor widows, and families weighed down by hardship. Once he learned of three beautiful sisters who could not marry because their father was so poor that they sometimes lacked even their daily bread. They were in danger of falling into sin. Nicholas was still a young layman, but full of purity and virtue. Troubled and saddened by their plight, he decided to save them from that danger. One night, under cover of darkness, he threw a tightly tied cloth bundle through a window of their poor house. He wanted to help without being seen. When it landed, it made a sudden noise.

What was it? They opened it and, to their astonishment, found gold coins—a great many of them. The father hurried outside at once. Who could this unknown and generous benefactor be? He searched but found no one. Soon he used the money to marry his eldest daughter to a wealthy man of the town, trusting in God that the one who had provided her dowry would also provide for the other two. The following night, the same thing happened again. The father rushed outside, but again found no one. He prayed that God would reveal his benefactor to him. In this way, he was able to marry his second daughter too.

The father then kept watch to see who was giving this alms. Saint Nicholas, wanting to complete his good work, threw in the same amount for a third time. When the father heard the coins fall, he opened the door at once and ran after the Saint. He caught up with him and recognized him. Falling at his feet, he thanked him for his great kindness. “If you had not come in time,” he said, “we would have been lost in soul and body.” Nicholas strictly instructed him not to reveal what he had done while he was alive. The father then married his third daughter well and spent the rest of his life in peace, glorifying God. The Saint longed

to venerate the Holy Places, so he set out for Jerusalem. One night, however, a fierce wind arose, and the waves grew high and threatening. Crew and passengers feared the ship would sink, and terror seized them. But the prayer of this traveler devoted to God calmed the storm and restored the sea to peace. During the storm, a sailor climbed the mast to fix the sail’s ropes. As he came down, he fell onto the deck and died. Everyone grieved deeply for him. The Saint prayed to God, and the sailor was raised from the dead. When Nicholas reached Jerusalem, he venerated the Holy Places: the most holy Tomb of the Lord, Golgotha,

the precious Cross, and all the other sacred sites. He wanted to stay there and live in hesychia, in inner stillness, but during the night an angel of the Lord instructed him to return home. After returning to Patara, he was ordained a priest. In his priestly ministry, he gave even more alms and cared still more for those who suffered. He gave what remained of his inheritance and gathered gifts from the wealthy to share with the poor. He taught his flock the faith and tended to their material and spiritual wounds. When the Archbishop of Myra in Lycia died, the bishops of Lycia gathered to choose his successor. They could not agree at once, so they postponed the decision until the next day. That night, however, they all saw the same vision.

They were told by the Lord that the most suitable man for the archbishopric was Nicholas, the priest in Patara, and that he would come to the cathedral the next day. The bishops followed this revelation and made Nicholas Archbishop of Myra. He did not want the office, but in the end he obeyed their unanimous call. The Saint’s work of mercy grew wider still. Alongside the alms he always gave quietly, he founded a home for the poor, a guesthouse, and a hospital. Yet his kindness did not keep him from being firm when firmness was needed. With the arrogant and unjust, he knew how to be a shepherd who carried a staff. More than once

he rebuked and warned the wealthy in order to defend those who were being wronged. When Diocletian and Maximian began a savage persecution of the Church of Christ, especially its bishops, the courageous Archbishop of Myra was not shaken. Despite the emperors’ decree, he went on teaching and leading his flock to the pastures of salvation. For this he was denounced, exiled, and imprisoned. He was released when God granted Constantine the Great repeated victories and freedom of Christian worship was secured. During Constantine’s reign, the heretic Arius appeared in Alexandria, teaching that Christ

was not true God, but a creature made by God. Saint Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria, removed Arius from office and anathematized him. Arius went on preaching his error, however, and drew several bishops into his heresy. Seeing the confusion in the Church, Constantine the Great convened the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea in Bithynia. In the year 325, 318 God-bearing Fathers gathered there. Among them were Sylvester, Pope of Rome; Metrophanes, Patriarch of Constantinople; Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria, assisted by Athanasius the Great, who was then a deacon; Saint Paphnutius the Confessor; and Saint Spyridon, Bishop of Trimythous,

as well as the great Wonderworker Nicholas. There Saint Nicholas saw Arius trying to silence all the bishops. Moved by divine zeal, he stood up and struck him hard across the face. Arius complained. The emperor was deeply distressed and had the Saint imprisoned.

That night in prison, the Lord and the Theotokos appeared to Nicholas. They asked him, “Nicholas, why are you in prison?” The Saint replied, “For love of you.” Christ said to him, “Take this,” and gave him the Holy Gospel. The Theotokos gave him the bishop’s omophorion.

The Saint was free of his chains. He wore the omophorion over his shoulder and held the Holy Gospel in his hands, reading it. When they asked him what had happened, he told them the whole truth. On hearing it, the emperor released him and asked his forgiveness. At another time, a terrible famine struck Lycia. Myra, the Saint’s diocese, was in danger of ruin. The Saint grieved for his flock. What did he do? A ship’s captain had loaded grain bound for France. That night Saint Nicholas appeared to him in a dream and said, “Take the grain to Myra in Lycia, not to France. There is a great famine there, and you will sell it quickly for a good price. Take these three gold coins as a deposit, and when you arrive, you will receive the rest of the money.”

When the captain woke in the morning, he found the three coins in his hands. He understood that this was from God and sailed to Myra in Lycia. There the grain was sold, and the people glorified God, who cares for those who put their hope in Him. Another time, men and women came running to the Saint in tears. They begged him to hurry and save three of their relatives whom the local governor, Eustathius, had unjustly condemned to death after taking a bribe from their enemies. The Saint saw the injustice of the sentence and appealed to three generals who were there on a mission to put down an uprising in Lower Phrygia.

He asked them to go with him, and together they hurried to save the condemned men. They arrived at the last moment. The Saint took from the executioner the sword with which he was about to behead them. With his own hands he untied their bonds and set them free. They went away rejoicing and glorifying God and Saint Nicholas. When Eustathius ran over to see what was happening, the Saint rebuked him for taking a bribe and passing an unjust sentence. Eustathius confessed and asked forgiveness. The three generals who witnessed this then completed their mission and returned to Constantinople. The emperor honored them for their success. But some envious men at court could not bear to see the three generals honored, so they went

to Ablabius, the emperor’s official, and falsely accused the generals of conspiracy. They also gave him money, and he had the generals imprisoned. Ablabius presented the three men to the emperor as conspirators, and the emperor ordered them beheaded the next day. When the sentence was announced, the innocent men were overcome with grief and despair. They knew no human power could save them. In their desperate state, they remembered Saint Nicholas, who had saved three men from an unjust death in Myra. They prayed fervently to the God of Nicholas and asked Him to save them from this unjust death. God saw the injustice and wished to glorify the Saint,

so He made a way for them. That night, shortly before dawn, the great Nicholas appeared to Emperor Constantine and said, “Emperor, get up quickly and free the three men you have condemned to death. Otherwise, I will ask God to take your life.” The emperor asked, “Who are you to threaten me, and how did you enter the palace at this hour?” The Saint replied, “I am Nicholas, the bishop of Myra. God sent me to tell you to free these three men who have been wronged.” The emperor awoke at once. The Saint also went to Ablabius, the prefect, and said to him, “Why did you take money and wrong three men who have done nothing? Free them quickly,

or I will ask God to take your life.” The emperor summoned Ablabius, who told him that he too had seen the same dream. They then called in the three condemned generals. The generals told them how Saint Nicholas had saved three innocent men in Myra of Lycia, and how they themselves had called upon God to help them through the Saint’s prayers. Hearing this, the emperor was moved to compunction and told the three men, “I grant you your lives. Know that you have been freed from death through that bishop. Go and tell him that I listened to him, and that he need not threaten me.” Then the emperor gave them a golden Gospel book,

a golden censer adorned with precious stones, and two large gilded lamps to take to the church where the great Nicholas served as bishop. On another occasion, sailors in danger of drowning asked for the Saint’s help. He appeared at the stern of their ship, took the helm, and steered it. “You called upon me,” he told them, “and I have come to help you.” Soon the wind died down, the sea grew calm, and the Saint vanished. The sailors went to Myra and met him there. He looked just like the man they had seen at sea, and they thanked him warmly. Yet even this great Saint was human and would one day die. After a short illness, he fell asleep in peace

in the year 330. Though his blessed soul departed from this world, the Saint did not forget, and does not forget, those who call upon him. After his blessed repose, he continued to work many miracles, as he still does for those who turn to him in faith. We will tell just one of them. In Constantinople there lived a devout Christian who loved our holy father Nicholas very much. When he was preparing for a journey, he went to Saint Nicholas’s church and prayed from the depths of his heart. He said farewell to his family and boarded a small boat. During the night, as this deeply devout man moved about the boat among the sailors,

His feet became tangled, and he fell into the sea. The sailors saw what had happened, but they could not pull him out. It was pitch dark, and a strong wind was driving the ship forward. Still fully clothed, the man began to sink. In his heart he cried, “Saint Nicholas, help me!” And, wonder of wonders, he found himself in the middle of his own home. Thinking he was still at sea, he kept crying aloud, “Saint Nicholas, help me!” The people in the house heard him, lit a lamp, and saw him standing there and shouting, with seawater streaming from his clothes.

When they heard what had happened and saw the seawater dripping from the rescued man’s clothes, they were astonished. The Christian changed his clothes and went to the church of Saint Nicholas. There he spent the rest of the night before the saint’s icon, thanking him with tears.

Saint Nicholas, whom we celebrate today, is among the greatest saints of our Church. By living faithfully as a Christian and persevering in his spiritual struggle, he glorified God, and God glorified him in return. He obeyed God, and God answered the saint, working miracles through him. Thus Saint Nicholas became, and remains, a wonderworker. Rightly, many Christians venerate and honor him. Many Christians and churches bear his name. The Church honors him not only once a year, on the day of his repose, but every week. Each Thursday is dedicated to the Holy Apostles and also to Saint Nicholas.

We think the reason our saint is so widely loved, if I may put it that way, is his many miracles. They move people and bring them spiritual benefit. We see the same with other saints who work many miracles: they are especially beloved, and many churches are built in their names. This is good. Since God glorifies them by granting them the gift of miracles, people are right to honor them too. Yet we believe the saints, and Saint Nicholas in particular, would wish even more for another miracle: the miracle of our metanoia, our repentance and salvation.

They help bring this about through their holy teaching, their holy example, and their holy intercessions. But we too must do our part. The best way to honor them is to follow their example. To celebrate a saint is to imitate that saint.
