Today, November 11, our Church commemorates Saint Minas the Great Martyr of Kotyaion; Saint Victor the Great Martyr; Saint Vincent the Hieromartyr and Deacon; Saint Stephanida the Martyr; Saint Theodore the Confessor, abbot of the Studion Monastery; and Saint Maximus the Blessed, the Russian fool for Christ and wonderworker of Moscow.

Saint Minas the Great Martyr lived during the reign of Emperor Maximian, toward the end of the third century after Christ. He was born in Egypt to pagan parents. Yet, though born to such parents, he became a chosen servant of Christ. When he came of age, he joined the army, serving in the imperial forces stationed at Kotyaion, now Kütahya in Asia Minor. He stood out among the other soldiers for his stature, courage, and good judgment. One day, when he heard the emperor’s orders to arrest and torture Christians, he came to hate that godless command, and

he left the army and went up into the mountains above Kotyaion, where he lived a life of ascesis, of ascetic discipline. Through fasting, vigils, and prayer, he purified himself, and love for God burned within him. After receiving a revelation, he decided to come down and openly proclaim his faith in Christ. He did so at a great pagan festival. The Christians who had been hiding rejoiced to see him, but the pagans seized him, beat him, and brought him before the city governor, Pyrrhus. At first, Pyrrhus imprisoned him. The next day, Saint Minas was brought before him. Pyrrhus urged him to embrace pagan worship, but saw that his faith could neither be moved nor shaken, so

he ordered him bound and severely whipped for a long time. Saint Minas showed remarkable patient endurance and remained steadfast. Seeing this, Pyrrhus ordered him suspended high above the ground, his flesh torn with iron claws, then rubbed with coarse haircloth and burned with flaming torches. Saint Minas endured all this by the grace of Christ and remained faithful to Him. The torture continued: he was dragged over iron spikes, beaten with rods, and struck in the face. None of it changed his resolve. At last, he was sentenced to be beheaded. As he went to the place of his martyrdom,

he asked some Christians who had been hiding to take his body to his homeland, Egypt, after his death. When they reached the place of execution, Saint Minas prayed and thanked the Lord for counting him worthy to share in His sufferings and to remain steadfast in confessing Him. He asked the Lord to receive his soul into His kingdom and to grant His grace and help to those who would call upon Saint Minas. Then he knelt, and his honored head was cut off. The pagans threw his head and body into the fire. The saint’s soul ascended to places of light and rest, while his honored and holy body, which was only partly burned,

was taken by his friends. They anointed it with myrrh, wrapped it, and, as he had asked, carried it to Egypt. God granted Saint Minas the grace to help people in need and to work many great miracles. We will mention just one: a remarkable miracle that Saint Minas the Great Martyr worked in our relatively recent history, whose benefits we Greeks still enjoy, along with all those who stood as allies beside our suffering homeland.

We know the desperate position Greece faced during the Second World War. At that time, Greece—

came under attack from the vastly greater forces of the Axis. She fought heroically and, while fighting the Italians, was victorious. But when Hitler’s heavily armed German armies attacked, Greece was overwhelmed and occupied by Germans, Italians, Bulgarians, and Albanians, and divided among them. The unimaginable suffering the Greeks endured in that period is well known. A small number of Greek soldiers escaped capture and crossed into Egypt, Saint Minas’s homeland. There they formed the core of the reconstituted Greek army and continued the struggle to free their enslaved homeland.

Hitler’s armies, led by the notorious Rommel, had captured almost all of North Africa and were advancing toward Alexandria. But in 1942 came the famous Battle of El Alamein. The Allied forces, which included the small number of free Greeks, stopped Rommel’s advance, defeated his forces, drove them into retreat, and pursued them until, according to this account, they had all been taken prisoner. As the struggle continued, these powerful enemies were completely overcome within two years, and Greece and the other occupied countries were liberated. This great and wondrous turn in the course of the war is attributed

to Saint Minas the Great Martyr. The name El Alamein, the speaker says, is an Arabic variation of Saint Minas’s name. The place was given that name because a church dedicated to him stands there, and it is said that his tomb was there as well. For centuries, pilgrims from all around the Mediterranean came to that church, and many miracles took place through the saint’s grace. Even today, images of his various miracles remain among the ruins of that ancient church. One shows Saint Minas leading the camels of a caravan that he saved from certain danger.

So when Rommel’s armies advanced toward Alexandria, they reached El Alamein and camped there for the night, preparing to attack the city in the morning. Everyone expected Alexandria to fall, and its fall would have had disastrous consequences for the course of the war.

Saint Minas did not let that disaster happen. Around midnight, some devout people saw him come out of the ruins of his church, leading camels just as he was shown in the image I mentioned, and enter the enemy camp with them. No one could describe the panic that seized those once mighty enemies from that moment on, or the scale of their defeat.

That hour marked the end of their power, and before long they were completely defeated. The Allied Christians of other denominations also recognized this as a miracle. As a sign of lasting gratitude to the saint, they gave the Patriarchate of Alexandria that site, so his church could be rebuilt and a monastery established there in his name.

The presence of the saints means a great deal to us, the members of the Church still struggling here on earth. The saints protect us in danger and help us in difficulty. They are examples for us to follow in our spiritual struggle, intercessors before God for our salvation, and a comfort in our burdens and sorrows. The saints are Christians who have fulfilled their calling, works of the Holy Spirit, imitators of Christ, and beloved children of the Father. And we love them, honor and venerate them, bear their names, build churches in their names, and paint their icons.

But above all, the saints want us to follow their example: to turn away from sin, cultivate the virtues they had, grow in spiritual life, draw ever closer to them, and glorify the holy God as they did. “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). Their longing is for our salvation and the glory of God. That is why their lives are read each day and their holy examples are set before us. Saint Minas is said to have a special gift for helping us find things we have lost. Let us pray and ask our wonderworking saint to help us,

through the grace he received from God, to find the Paradise we have lost—or for our Lord to find us, like the lost coin in His Gospel (Luke 15:8–10).
