Today, November 10, our Church commemorates the holy Apostles of the Seventy: Olympas, Rhodion, Erastus, Sosipater, and Quartus; Saint Orestes the Martyr; Saint Theosteriktos of Symbola; Saint Nonnus, who instructed Saint Pelagia in the faith; Saint Martin the Bishop; Saint Miles, the wonderworking bishop and hieromartyr, and his two disciples; Saint Arsenios of Cappadocia; and the holy martyrs Calliopios, Niros, and Orion.
Saint Miles was born in Persia. After he was baptized, he studied the sacred writings. Later, he was about to become a soldier of the king of Persia, but a terrifying vision stopped him. From then on, he lived in chastity and ascetic discipline, praying to God for himself and for all his people. Some years later, he left his homeland, became a monk, and settled in Babylon. Gennadios, a confessor and martyr, ordained him bishop. Miles tried to correct the Christians there, who were doing wrong in both word and deed. But they defied him, beat him, and drove him away. Seeing that they would not repent, the Saint
foretold the wrath of God that was about to fall upon them, and departed. Three months later, his prophecy came true. The leaders of his diocese committed a grave offense against the king, who sent soldiers with three hundred elephants. They destroyed the city and slaughtered its people. Saint Miles then went to Jerusalem, where he met Ammonius, a disciple of Saint Anthony the Great. He stayed there for two years before returning to Persia, where something wondrous happened. A great serpent entered a monk’s cave. The Saint made the sign of the precious Cross over it, and...
when he breathed upon it, it died at once. When the Saint returned to his province, he built a church to make atonement for the sins of the people who had disobeyed and had been put to a cruel death by the king. Many years later, he attended a Synod of bishops in the city of Ctesiphon. There he rebuked the bishop whose conduct had brought the Synod together. That bishop boasted of his wisdom and mocked the Saint. So Miles said to him, “Because you remain uncorrected and arrogant toward the bishops whom the Holy Spirit has gathered, the wrath of God now falls upon you. You will be paralyzed on one side for many years, so that your illness may bring the others to their senses.”
And indeed, paralysis struck him on one side and lasted twelve years, until his death. From there, the Saint went to another city, whose ruler had suffered from a terrible illness for two years. When the ruler heard that the Saint was there, he sent a messenger to ask Miles to visit him and give him his blessing. The messenger urged the Saint to hurry, but Miles told him, “Go and say loudly to the sick man who sent you: This is what the bishop commands. In the name of Jesus Christ, whom I, unworthy as I am, proclaim, cast off every illness. Gird yourself and come to see me on your own feet.” As soon as the messenger returned and spoke these words—what a wonder!
Every trace of the illness vanished. The ruler regained his strength, rose, and walked to the Saint on his own feet. He fell at the Saint’s feet and kissed them, thanking and glorifying God. This astonishing miracle of the Saint drew many unbelievers to the true faith in Christ.
The Saint also drove out many demons. He took by the hand a woman who had been paralyzed for nine years and raised her up healed. Saint Miles performed many other miracles in different places. When the ruler Basiliscus heard of them, he sent for the Saint and his two disciples and had them brought before him.
Basiliscus saw that Miles was unshakable in his faith in Christ, and subjected him to many tortures. At one point, inflamed with anger, he drew his sword and struck the Saint in the chest. The ruler’s brother joined him and struck the Saint in the heart. While the Lord’s bishop and champion was still alive, he said to them, “Because the two of you have agreed to kill me, though I have done no wrong, tomorrow at this same hour your own hands will shed each other’s blood. You will kill one another, and your mother will be left without children.” Having said this, he gave up his soul into God’s hands. Basiliscus had the Saint’s two disciples buried beneath stones.
The next day, the godless ruler went hunting with his brother. They paid no heed to the Saint’s prophecy, dismissing it as idle talk. When they spotted a deer, they approached it from opposite sides, each facing the other across the animal. Both threw their spears to kill it.
The spears missed the deer and pierced the brothers’ hearts. Thus both died a violent death. Christians buried the relics of Saint Miles and his disciples, while their souls ascended to heaven, where they intercede for us before the Lord.
What strikes us in many accounts, and perhaps especially in today’s, is how deeply a person’s heart can become distorted. Such a person can dismiss even the clearest signs through which God speaks: the unmistakable miracles we encounter in the Holy Gospel and in the lives of the Saints. We have heard how many great miracles Saint Miles, whom we celebrate today, performed, and how they led many people to faith in Christ. Yet Basiliscus and his brother were more than indifferent to them: they responded with a terrible crime. We see the same hostile attitude
in the Gospels, where the scribes and Pharisees said that the Lord cast out demons by the ruler of demons. They attributed the manifest divine uncreated energies of the Holy Spirit to the devil. This is a grave sin and a dreadful distortion. According to the Lord’s word, it remains unforgiven both in this age and in the age to come, because a person who takes such a hostile, blasphemous stance toward the Holy Spirit refuses to receive the Spirit of God,
who alone can cleanse a person from sin and give that person eternal life—the life of God, salvation. When the heart is willing, however, things become simple. The Lord gives us examples: the Ninevites repented at Jonah’s plain preaching, without any miracles, and were spared the destruction God had planned. And a queen made the long journey from Arabia to Israel to hear the wisdom of Solomon. May God protect us from that deadly condition. And may we, as far as we are able, walk before the Lord with sincerity and honesty, remaining open and responsive to His grace.
