The hieromartyr Methodius of Patara, also known as Methodius of Olympus, was dedicated to God from childhood and became a precious vessel of the Holy Spirit. By God's will, he ascended the episcopal throne of Patara. He proved a good shepherd, enlightening people by his words, an example to the faithful through his holy life, a tireless guardian of the truth of the faith, and a courageous defender of it. When he found the false teachings of Origen spreading boldly through his diocese, he undertook a sustained struggle and greatly reduced the number of their adherents. According to one account, those followers of Origen who remained

took their defeat badly. Unable to defend their error, and driven by hostility toward the true Christian faith, they decided to kill its great defender. To this end, they managed to place one of their own supporters beside the Saint as his servant, spurring him on with promises of money. One day, while the bishop was ill, the servant stabbed him to death. Thus Methodius departed as a martyr for the blessed and unending life. First he had offered the Lamb of God in the sacred ministry; then he himself was offered to God as a living sacrifice.

This courageous defender of the faith was adorned with a double crown: he was a bishop, and he also met a martyr's end, staining his priestly vestments purple with the blood of martyrdom. This holy and true priest and martyr of God left us writings rich in every kind of knowledge and spiritual benefit. He also foretold many future events clearly, including the devastation of many places and cities, the Antichrist, and other things.

Callistus, whose memory our Church also celebrates today, lived in the fourteenth century. He was a monk on the Holy Mountain, near Iviron Monastery, a disciple of Saint Gregory of Sinai, and a follower of Saint Gregory Palamas.

Distinguished by his virtue and learning, he became Patriarch of Constantinople in June 1350, during the reigns of John VI Kantakouzenos and John Palaiologos. Soon afterward, the Saint learned that people in the imperial city were turning to magic: not only the uneducated, but also those of the so-called upper classes, especially women. He set out to combat this evil. He knew that such things arose from the spiritual darkness of the flock, which in turn began with the spiritual dryness of the clergy. So he organized the parish clergy. In each parish he appointed the most virtuous and educated priest to lead it, teach the other priests, and work with them to give the parishioners proper spiritual instruction. In 1351, a Synod met at the Palace of Blachernae and affirmed the Orthodox teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas. Three years later, however,

Callistus left the patriarchal throne. The Kantakouzenos and Palaiologos families were disputing the imperial crown, and the reigning emperor, John Kantakouzenos, wanted to secure his family's rule by crowning his son Matthew as well. The Patriarch did not wish to become involved in such matters. He withdrew to the Monastery of Saint Mamas and later went to Tenedos. When John Palaiologos took the imperial city in 1355, Callistus returned to the patriarchate. In December of that year, he sent an instruction to the priests in Tarnovo, Bulgaria,

who, contrary to the Canons, were baptizing with one immersion instead of three. They were also replacing the Holy Chrism with myrrh from the relics of Saint Demetrios and Saint Barbaros. During this Patriarch's second term, the monasteries of Pantokrator and Simonopetra were founded on the Holy Mountain. In 1363, the emperor sent the Saint as an envoy to Elisabeth, ruler of Serbia, in Serres, described by some as being in Thessaly and by others as being in Serbia. On the way, he passed through the Holy Mountain and visited the hut of Saint Maximos the Kavsokalyvite. The venerable monk came out to meet him and received his blessing

and, after greeting him, said playfully to those present about the Patriarch, “This elder has lost his lady,” meaning Constantinople. After they had spoken for some time, he saw him off by chanting, “Blessed is the way on which you journey today,” and the rest of the hymn,

foretelling his death. And indeed, Callistus fell gravely ill in Serres, died on June 20, and was buried there with great ceremony by Elisabeth in the cathedral.

As mentioned earlier, today we also celebrate the gathering in honor of the Most Holy Theotokos, called the Hodegetria. The following account is told of her holy icon. From time immemorial, this icon of the Theotokos had stood in the main church of Vatopedi Monastery on the Holy Mountain, on a pillar by the left choir. In 1730, though the doors were locked, it mysteriously disappeared. It could not be found anywhere in the church or the monastery. The fathers thought someone had stolen it. While they were searching, word came that it had been found at Xenophontos Monastery,

on the other side of the Holy Mountain, three hours' journey from Vatopedi. They immediately sent men to bring it back, and the icon was returned to its place. They took strict measures to prevent it from being stolen or removed again. Even so, this revered icon of the Theotokos left Vatopedi a second time, for reasons known only to her. The church doors and their locks remained untouched, yet the icon went miraculously to the holy place she herself had chosen: Xenophontos Monastery.

It has remained there and will remain as long as she wills, bringing comfort to the brothers who pursue the ascetic life there. A little later, the brothers of Vatopedi entered their church and saw that the holy icon was missing again from its usual place. They became convinced that its departure was willing and miraculous. When they learned that it had gone to the same monastery, they thought it wrong to oppose the Theotokos's decision any further, and they all went to venerate it. In remembrance of this miracle, they decided to bring candles and oil to the icon at Xenophontos Monastery, and they did so for many years. This holy icon stands in the monastery's main church,

on the pillar by the left choir, just as it once stood in the main church of Vatopedi Monastery.

Among the most important works of the holy hieromartyr Methodius, whom we celebrate today, is the Symposium on Chastity. Through a dialogue, it describes humanity's journey from marriage to virginity, which it presents as the fullest way for a person to become like Christ. The dialogue takes place in the beautiful garden of Virtue. As hostess, Virtue invites ten virgins to a feast, where each speaks about virginity from a different perspective. Virginity is more than bodily ascesis, or ascetic discipline, and chastity concerns more than the body. Above all, it means keeping the soul uncorrupted and free from the passions. The teacher of virginity is the Lord, the supreme Virgin, who attained likeness to God and is our example to follow. Yet marriage and having children are not to be despised; through having children, God's divine uncreated energies continue to bring forth life. Virginity is simply preferable to marriage. It is a very high calling, a foretaste of the Last Things (eschata), and a way for human beings to live like angels. Only those who are able are called to undertake it. Virginity is chiefly a positive state: it is the complete

dedication of soul and body to God. A virgin gives herself wholly to the Lord when she not only refrains from marriage but also struggles to keep herself unstained by other wrongs. The mouth remains chaste when it praises God and says nothing improper. The eyes remain chaste when they do not desire beautiful bodies or shameful spectacles, but look toward the things above. The ears remain chaste when they are closed to slander and whispered gossip, and open to hearing the divine Word (Logos). The hands remain chaste when they are not stained by dishonest dealings, quarrels, or love of money. The feet remain chaste when they do not walk crooked paths.

And as she strives to keep the commandments, the heart remains chaste when all its movements are directed toward the Lord, when it desires no wickedness, dwells on nothing worldly, and is not seized by anger or vanity. According to Saint Methodius, virginity is higher even than martyrdom. Virgins do not undergo a brief martyrdom of the body; throughout their lives, they struggle against fierce pleasures and other evils. In this way, the soul preserves its beauty unstained and untouched, just as the painter first portrayed it. Only then does the burning heat of corruption fail to darken it, and it remains whole

to be offered as a gift to Christ the Bridegroom.
