On February 12, our Church commemorates Saint Meletius, Archbishop of Antioch the Great; Saint Mary, who took the name Marinos; Saint Anthony, Archbishop of Constantinople; the holy martyrs Plotinus and Saturninus; and the holy New Martyr Christos the Gardener.
Meletius was born in Melitene in Lesser Armenia around the year 310. He was known for his learning and devotion to God. At the age of forty-seven, he was ordained bishop of Sebaste. Three years later, he was chosen as Archbishop of Antioch. This was the city where those who believed in Christ were first called Christians. Because of its fame and magnificent buildings, it was known as Antioch the Great. Saint Gregory of Nyssa calls Meletius a new Apostle, counted among the Apostles. Elsewhere, he describes him as a harmony of virtues, a man zealous for the faith, and a pillar of the Church,
an adornment to its altars, and much more. Sadly, when Meletius took his new seat, the Christians of Antioch were divided into three groups. There were the faithful Orthodox, who became his devoted flock. Then there were the Arians and Semi-Arians. And there were the Eustathians, devoted followers of the former Archbishop Eustathius, who refused to recognize his successors as lawful bishops.
At first, none of these groups showed hostility toward Meletius. The Arians hoped he would favor them. But the saint faithfully upheld and defended the decisions of the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea.
The faithful asked him to give them a brief teaching on the Holy Trinity. First, the saint held up three fingers before the crowd. Then he folded down two, leaving one raised, and said, “We understand three, yet speak of them as one.” With the three fingers he showed the three persons, each of one essence with the others; with the one finger, the one essence of God. This angered the Arians, who accused him of heresy. At the same time, a synod of Arian clergy declared that he had lost his seat. The emperor Constantius, who favored Arianism, upheld their decision. So, barely a month after taking his seat as Archbishop of Antioch,
Meletius was exiled to Armenia. In one of his homilies, Saint John Chrysostom praises the effect Meletius had on the Orthodox in so short a time. He tells his listeners that, in fewer than thirty full days, Meletius had grounded them so firmly in the faith and kindled such zeal in them that, even when countless storms came afterward, their shepherd’s teaching remained unshaken. John Chrysostom also tells of something that happened as Meletius was leaving Antioch. The city’s governor was taking the bishop by carriage out of the city and into exile.
Crowds of Orthodox faithful heard what was happening and ran to receive their shepherd’s blessing. But when they saw the governor, their anger at their bishop’s unjust exile rose so high that they showered the emperor’s representative with stones, aiming especially at his head. Then Meletius made a gesture worthy of the goodness of a Christian bishop. When his words and gestures could not calm the crowd, he stood up and protected the man who was driving him into exile, covering the governor’s head with his own garments. At this sight, the people admired Meletius even more. They also respected his wishes and, with aching hearts,
let the carriage pass. Saint John Chrysostom says, very movingly, that when Meletius departed for Armenia, he took with him the hearts and minds of his whole flock. Euzoius, who favored Arianism, was chosen to replace the exiled Meletius. But Meletius’s Orthodox flock would not enter into Church communion with his heretical replacement. Faithful to their true shepherd, they waited for his return. Julian the Apostate succeeded the emperor Constantius. Early in his reign, probably for political reasons, he recalled all the bishops whom his predecessors had exiled.
And so Saint Meletius returned to Antioch. Saint John Chrysostom gives a vivid account of his joyous entry into the city. Saint Meletius took part in the Second Ecumenical Council, held in Constantinople in 381, and presided over it. He died while the Council was still in session. His funeral was attended by the whole city and by the entire Council. At the Council’s request, Gregory the Theologian, Archbishop of Constantinople, delivered the funeral address. The people of Antioch received the sad news with deep sorrow. Their mourning was especially plain when the remains of their beloved bishop were brought back to rest in the place
where he had labored so hard and endured so much bitterness.
Mary set aside her women’s clothing, dressed as a man, and took the name Marinos. She entered a monastery with her father and lived as a monk, serving alongside the younger monks. No one realized she was a woman. Once, while staying at an inn with other monks, she was accused of having seduced the innkeeper’s daughter. The blessed Mary willingly bore the weight of this slander and said that she had committed the sin, though she had done no such thing. She was expelled from the monastery and spent three difficult years caring for a child who was not hers.
In time, she was received back into the monastery, bringing with her the child people believed she had fathered. When she died, those preparing her for burial discovered that she was a woman. The truth about her life and her virtues then came to light. The innkeeper’s daughter, who had slandered the saint, was overcome by an evil demon and confessed that a soldier had been the child’s father. From then on, the abbot and the monks, who had once called Mary wretched, called her blessed and granted her many honors.
Few things are harder to bear than slander: a false or groundless accusation. We can understand a guilty person being accused and condemned. But what of an innocent person who is accused and condemned? Ecclesiastes says, “Behold the tears of those who are slandered, and they have no one to comfort them.” They weep inconsolably, says Saint John Chrysostom, because slander is a terrible thing. “It is terrible, though it should not be,” he adds. “For if the judge—your conscience, or God Himself—does not condemn you, why do you mourn?” And Saint Basil the Great says that
no one is so unfeeling that their soul does not suffer and bend under the weight of being talked about by people who lie so easily. But let us return to Saint Mary. We saw the woman who slandered her come under the power of a demon and confess the truth, exposing her own lie. When the truth about the saint came to light, she was vindicated in the eyes of those who had condemned her. Having borne the weight of slander and all that followed from it, she was counted worthy of the crown of holiness. We believe she willingly and gladly took up this cross of slander for her spiritual benefit. So the saint is an example for us today. She shows us how to face slander. More broadly, by humbly giving up her right to defend herself, she urges us to learn to give up our own rights for the sake of others and for our spiritual growth.
