Saint Macrina, whom we celebrate today, was born around AD 328. She was the eldest of the ten children of the saintly couple Basil and Emmelia. Her brothers included Saint Basil the Great, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, Saint Naucratius, and Saint Peter of Sebaste. Her parents named her Macrina. But before her birth, her mother dreamed that she was holding her daughter in her arms, and a majestic man appeared and called the child Thecla. So the saint secretly bore the name of Saint Thecla, the First Martyr and Equal to the Apostles. Her biographer and brother, Saint Gregory of Nyssa, suggests that the man did not mean for Emmelia to name her daughter Thecla. Rather, the name foretold that Macrina’s life and resolve would resemble those of the virgin Thecla. In the end, she was named after her paternal grandmother, Macrina, who had been a disciple of Saint Gregory the Wonderworker and had endured persecution under Diocletian and Galerius. As Macrina grew out of infancy, she devoted herself to learning the God-inspired words of Holy Scripture, especially the wisdom of Solomon and the Psalter.
She would recite a fitting verse from the Psalter at every moment: when she woke, when she began and finished a task, when she ate and rose from the table, and when she went to bed. In this way, she joined her whole life to the psalms of David. When she was twelve, her father chose a thoughtful, educated young man and decided that she would marry him when the time came.
During their betrothal, death took the young man from this life. From then on, Macrina would not agree to marry anyone else, despite her parents’ urging and the many men who sought her hand.
She said that just as each person has one birth and one death, so there should be one marriage. Each woman has one husband, she said, and since her father had chosen this young man for her, she could belong to no other. God had willed to take him to Himself. God always acts with wisdom, she maintained, and submitting to His will is life and happiness.
Macrina remained in her family home. She gave her mother great help, especially after her father’s death, in raising her brothers and sisters in the Christian faith. There were four boys and five girls besides Macrina.
She lived a pure and blameless life. Her ascesis, her disciplined life in God, became an example to her mother, whom she gradually drew toward the full life of the nuns. She also seems to have had a profound influence on her brother Basil. After his studies in worldly learning, she helped him turn away from public acclaim and worldly advantage and devote himself wholly to God and His Church. She had a similar influence on her other siblings. In particular, she helped shape the character of her youngest brother, Saint Peter. She took him into her care from infancy and guided him directly toward God.
From an early age, she trained him in sacred learning, giving his soul no chance to turn toward anything vain. She was like a father and a teacher to him, counseling him in every good thing and every virtue. Macrina’s life, then, was a life of virtue, but also of pain.
After the death of her betrothed, it seems that one of her siblings died very young. Then her second brother, Naucratius, drowned unexpectedly at the age of twenty-seven. He had lived an ascetic life and cared for elderly people who were ill. Their father, Basil, had also died.
Through these difficult times, the faith and courage of the eldest daughter always shone. She stood beside her mother like an unshakable rock, supporting and comforting her. She helped her rise above calamity, and together they emerged from the furnace of suffering purer and more spiritual. Many years passed. Burning with divine love, Saint Macrina was granted the grace to found a community of women on her family’s estate at Annesi in Pontus, near the Iris River. It was a model of shared monastic life for its time: a nursery of saintly women and a place of spiritual struggle and growth toward perfection. On the opposite bank of the Iris, her brother Saint Peter built a monastery of his own.
The two monasteries developed a bond of mutual, brotherly support. They became a source of both spiritual and material blessing for the region. Macrina’s mother, together with the freed former servants who wished to join her, formed the first members of the community. The noblewoman Emmelia left her former habits behind. She attained the same depth of humility as Macrina and made herself equal to the other nuns. She ate at the same table, slept on the same kind of bedding, and shared their life in every other respect. Macrina and her mother had left worldly vanity behind and sought to live like the angels.
No anger, envy, hatred, pride, or other passion could be seen in them. Nor did they desire anything vain, whether honor, acclaim, or anything like it. Self-restraint was their delight. Being held in no esteem was their glory. Their wealth was to own nothing and to shake off every material possession like dust. They treated all the tasks of this present life as secondary. Their true work was to study divine things, pray constantly, and sing hymns without ceasing, day and night. This was both their work and their rest.
Although they were bound to their bodies, their lives were not pulled downward by the body’s weight. They rose upward with the heavenly powers. Many years passed in this way, and their virtues grew with the years. The saint’s mother reached a great age and departed to the Lord around May of 370. She died in the arms of her first and last children, Macrina and Peter, whom she blessed especially just before her repose. In that same year, Basil the Great became bishop of Caesarea, and later he ordained his brother Peter
as a priest and then as bishop of Sebaste. Eight years later, Basil, renowned throughout the world, also departed this life. When Macrina heard of his death, she grieved, but she was not overcome. She bore this loss too with courage. After Basil’s death, Gregory wished to visit his sister, whom he had not seen for more than eight years. At her monastery, he found her ill with a fever, lying on a hard board. She thanked God for granting her wish to see Gregory before leaving this life. Then she spoke with him at length about life, the soul, death, and salvation.
The next day, their conversation turned to their parents, and they remembered their ancestors who had suffered for the faith. Macrina’s heart overflowed with gratitude for God’s gifts. She spoke of her love for Christ her Bridegroom and her longing to reach Him soon and be united with Him. In the evening, she ended their conversation and turned to prayer. When a light was brought in, she gave thanks in silence, for her voice had failed. She made the sign of the cross, drew a deep breath, and, with her eyes closed and her hands crossed over her chest, ended her earthly life. Word spread through the monastery, and before long the nuns, who had held back their grief,
felt they had lost the one who had nurtured their hope in God and guided them toward salvation. They burst into mourning, especially those whom Macrina had found during a famine, raised, and led into monastic life. A vigil was held that night. At dawn, the local bishop, Araxios, arrived with a great crowd. They carried and buried the saint’s body, as she had wished, where her parents were buried. On his return journey, Saint Gregory met a soldier who told him how his daughter’s eyes had been miraculously healed through Saint Macrina’s prayer. But this was not the only miracle God worked through her. During a famine, the blessed Macrina would take
wheat from the storehouse and distribute it to the poor, yet the supply did not diminish at all. She healed others who were ill, and when she was young, she herself was healed of a tumor in her breast through prayer. She healed people afflicted by demons and foretold things to come. She glorified God through her saintly life, and in His goodness He glorifies her in return.
In today’s account of Saint Macrina’s life, we have also caught a glimpse of other saints among her relatives. Some were married and others unmarried. This wider pattern gives us occasion to stress that, in the life of the Church and in Orthodox patristic teaching, the decisive difference is neither between life in a monastery and life in the world nor between those who are married and those who are unmarried. It is between people who have the Holy Spirit and are led by Him, and people who do not have Him and are led by themselves—or rather, by evil spirits. There is a second point that follows from this:
The Christian way of life, as Holy Scripture describes it and the saints live it, is ascetic. Holy Scripture bears witness to this new life and guides us toward it. To receive this new life, this salvation, requires an ascetic way of living from every Christian who wants to receive the Holy Spirit, whether married or unmarried. The commands to “strive to enter through the narrow gate,” “the kingdom of God suffers violence, and the violent take it by force,” and “put to death what is earthly in you,” among others, are addressed to all Christians and apply to everyone.
Wherever a person lives, the purpose of every human life is theosis: union with God. Ascesis, the ascetic discipline that helps us attain it, belongs to every Christian. There is one salvation offered to all, and the purity it requires is necessary for everyone.
