On September 29, our Church commemorates Saint Kyriakos the Anchorite; the 150 Holy Martyrs of Palestine; Saints Tryphon, Trophimos, and Dorymedon; the Holy Martyrs Petronia and Goudelia; and the Holy Martyr Gobdelas, son of Sapor, king of the Persians, together with his sister Kazdoa and their fellow martyrs Dadas and Kazdoos.
Kyriakos was born in Corinth, in the Peloponnese, in the year 448, when Emperor Theodosius the Younger ruled in Constantinople. His father, John, was a priest; his mother was named Eudoxia. His maternal uncle Peter was a bishop, and he made Kyriakos a reader. As Kyriakos read the divine Scriptures, his heart was kindled with a longing to go to Jerusalem. So, at the age of eighteen, he sailed from the port of Cenchreae to Joppa and traveled on to Jerusalem. There he met his uncle Eustorgios, who was blessed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit
and from whom he received great spiritual benefit. He heard everyone speak of Saint Euthymius the Great with deep reverence and admiration, and longed to meet him. After receiving Eustorgios’s blessing, he went to see him. Euthymius welcomed him joyfully and clothed him in the monastic habit. But Euthymius did not admit beardless young men to his lavra, so as to avoid causing scandal among the brothers. He therefore sent Kyriakos to Saint Gerasimos of the Jordan, who received him and assigned him to the kitchen. There Kyriakos served the brothers eagerly. He ate only bread and drank only water, and even then only every other day. He spent his nights in
vigils and prayer. Saint Gerasimos valued him so highly that during Great Lent he took him into the desert of Rouba, where Kyriakos shared in his labors and virtues. Saint Euthymius the Great also lived in stillness there and gave them Holy Communion every Sunday until Palm Sunday. Soon afterward, Gerasimos saw in a vision the soul of Euthymius ascending in glory to heaven, escorted by holy angels. He took Kyriakos with him to the lavra, and after they reverently buried Saint Euthymius’s body, they returned to their monastery. In the ninth year after Kyriakos’s arrival in Palestine,
the wondrous Gerasimos also reposed. Kyriakos, then twenty-seven, went to the Lavra of Saint Euthymius, where the abbot Elias received him. Later he went to the Lavra of Souka, founded by Saint Chariton the Confessor, whom we commemorated yesterday. He remained there for many years, serving in many ways and showing great patient endurance and profound humility. It is said that he never became angry with anyone. At the age of forty, he was ordained a priest. Then, at seventy-seven, an age when others consider themselves unable to bear hardship and seek rest,
he took one of his disciples, left the monastery, and went into the desert of Natoufa. Finding nothing suitable to eat, Kyriakos asked God to make some wild plants called dog onions sweet. He told his disciple, “Gather these plants, my child, add salt and boil them. Blessed be God, who will satisfy us with them.” God heard the saint’s prayer and made those bitter plants sweet, and they lived on them for four years.
One of the people living nearby heard about Kyriakos’s life. He loaded his pack animal with warm loaves of bread and brought them to the saint. One day, without being told to do so by the saint, his disciple
again ate some dog onions in secret. This time they were so bitter that he nearly died. Saint Kyriakos prayed for him and healed him by giving him the Holy Mysteries. When their bread ran out, the saint again told his disciple to boil the bitter dog onions, and once more they lived on them. In the fifth year of his stay there, a man brought him his son, who was afflicted by a demon, and begged him for mercy. The saint prayed, anointed the boy with oil in the sign of the Cross, and healed him. Word of the miracle spread, and many people came, interrupting the saint’s prayer. So he left for the deeper desert of Rouba.
For five years he lived on roots, shoots, and the tips of wild plants. Yet even there, many people afflicted by demons or other illnesses found him, and no one left without help or comfort. Because of the crowds, the saint withdrew still farther into the trackless desert, to a place called Sousakim. But even there, his grace and the deep longing of the faithful drew many visitors. When an epidemic struck the surrounding region, the monks of the Lavra of Souka hurried to him and begged him to return and help them. His compassionate heart was moved, and he returned to the lavra.
He spent five years there in the cell of Saint Chariton the Confessor. At that time, Origen’s mistaken teaching was causing great controversy, and the turmoil reached even the Holy City. Saint Kyriakos opposed those who held Origen’s doctrines and did much to strengthen the Orthodox faith. When many people again began coming to him, he returned to the desert of Sousakim at the age of ninety-nine. As his biographer, Cyril of Scythopolis, tells us, a great and fearsome lion served him there. It guarded his small vegetable patch from wild goats and drove away robbers and raiders. Once, during a severe drought,
there was no water anywhere. The saint prayed to God, and at once a small cloud appeared above him. Rain fell around his cell and filled all his vessels set among the rocks. After eight years in Sousakim, in the year 555, when he was 106, the fathers of the Lavra of Souka came and, after much pleading, brought him to the cave of Saint Chariton. Despite his great age, he stood willingly through the services and served everyone who came to him with his own hands. He showed no weakness, but could always do all things through Christ who strengthened him. He was gentle and approachable,
ready to teach and steadfast in the Orthodox faith. He was large in stature and strong, with all his limbs sound. Truly, he was filled with the grace of the Holy Spirit. After two years in that cave, he became slightly ill. He called together all the fathers of the lavra, embraced them, and reposed in peace at the age of 108. He gave his spirit to the Lord and received from Him the crown of righteousness promised to those who love Him.
The saints of our Church lived the different aspects of Christian spiritual life and teach them to us by their example. Some saints lived out a particular aspect so intensely that they came to be known by names such as the Faster, the Merciful, the Virgin, the Hesychast, or the Recluse. In the same way, the saint we commemorate today is called the Anchorite because withdrawal was such an important part of his life. He withdrew from the world and even from the communal monastery into what is described as utter wilderness.
This withdrawal went beyond what was usual, but it was no unhealthy eccentricity. It was part of a sound spiritual life, an expression of the saint’s ardent love for God. A saint leaves the world—everything that is not God, everything that hinders communion with Him to any degree—in order to be united with God. Saint John Climacus tells us, “We do not leave our relatives or our homes because we hate them—God forbid—but to avoid the harm they cause us.” And when a person has found God in this way, he has found what he needed to find.
In God he finds everything. He also finds deep and genuine love for other people. He shows that love by praying for the world, or in whatever other way the need calls for. So, although he may appear to have withdrawn from others, he is deeply concerned for them and does them more good than we can grasp.
Physical withdrawal helps us to withdraw spiritually. If our circumstances mean that we cannot or should not physically leave the world, we can still do much to withdraw spiritually. How? By avoiding, as far as we can, every vanity and every occasion of sin. If we do this...
it will greatly help us in our spiritual struggle, and the benefit will be great.
