Kyriaki lived during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth century after Christ. At that time, in the eastern lands, there lived a Christian named Dorotheos and his Christian wife, Eusebia. He was wealthy and generous to the poor.
Yet they were always sorrowful because they had no child. They prayed to God about this. And God, who had blessed the barren Sarah, Hannah, and Elizabeth and granted them children, blessed this devout couple too. They had this daughter, and because she was born on a Sunday, they named her Kyriaki at her holy Baptism. Under her parents’ loving care and God’s blessing, the saint grew into a beautiful and deeply devout young woman. She had a living faith, self-control, modesty, and the purity that keeps both body and soul virginal. Her parents thought of finding her a husband, but she preferred a life of virginity. Besides, the persecutions had not ended. What kind of family could one raise in such difficult times? And what would it mean to have children who might soon be left orphans? In those days, a pagan ruler
was staying in the city where the saint’s parents lived. Hearing about Kyriaki, he decided that she should marry his son. He was drawn by her beauty and learning, but also by the fact that she was an only child: her parents’ great wealth would come into his hands.
With this in mind, he sent word to the saint’s parents, asking them to agree to the match. But the saint had given herself entirely to God, body and soul, and would hear nothing of it. She said only, “I am the bride of my Christ, and I wish to die a virgin.” When the ruler heard this, he grew furious and denounced both the saint and her parents as Christians.
These were, as we have said, the days of Diocletian, that fierce persecutor of Christians. The accusation was brought before Justus, the prefect of Melitene. He summoned Dorotheos and Eusebia and heard them say plainly that they were Christians. He tried in many ways to change their minds, warning them that if they persisted in confessing their faith, they would bring about their daughter’s death as well. But they answered that everyone and everything belongs to God, their Maker and Lord. In His mercy, He had heard their prayers and given them their daughter. They had raised her as His child, not as their own. Their one desire was
to see her crowned in His eternal Kingdom. Of course they would grieve at her death, but their consciences would be at peace, for they would bear no guilt for her blood. Kyriaki was then summoned. She came before the ruler with modesty and reserve, but when he urged her to embrace idolatry, she answered with the same resolve and steadfastness as her parents. At this firm refusal, he ordered her parents put to death. They were beheaded by the sword and received the martyr’s crown. This only strengthened the virgin Kyriaki’s resolve. Her longing for heaven grew more intense.
For the time being, however, no harsher sentence was passed against her. She was imprisoned, though without the usual cruelty shown to Christians. Hoping her resolve would weaken and that her youth would finally persuade her to save her life by sacrificing her faith, they gave her some comfort. But the days passed, and her Christian steadfastness did not fade. What were they to do? Word had spread that Hilarion, the prefect of Bithynia, had persuaded several Christians to return to idolatry. Hoping he could do the same with Kyriaki, they sent her to him. But the saint put all his cunning and cruelty to shame.
Though an innocent young woman, she had the wonderful wisdom given by the Spirit of God and the unconquerable courage with which divine almighty power arms those who keep their hearts pure. “I pay no heed to my youth or my beauty,” she told the prefect. “Even the most splendid things on earth are as fleeting as flowers. What is today’s young woman but tomorrow’s old woman? Should I make my beauty the center of my life? I see its true worth in the wrinkles that await it and the grave that calls it. Did you really think that I, a Christian woman, would be so terribly foolish as to let my Christ declare me unworthy and lose eternal glory just
to remain a little longer on this earth, where only the graves can boast of lasting? In life and in death, I am and shall remain a Christian.” These words were followed by terrible torture. They hung the saint by her hair and burned her body with flaming torches. She endured it all with great courage for love of Christ. He appeared to her in the prison where they later cast her and said, “Do not fear these torments, Kyriaki. My grace will be with you and deliver you from every temptation.” Having said this, the Lord healed her wounds and vanished. The next day, Hilarion saw the saint restored to health
and said to her, “The great gods love you dearly. Taking pity on your beauty, they healed your wounds so you would bear no disfigurement. Do not be ungrateful to them. Come with me to their temple and worship them.” The saint replied, “It was not your gods who healed me, but my Christ. Still, since you wish it, let us go to their temple and see whom you want me to worship.” They went, and when they entered the temple, the saint knelt and prayed: “Lord Jesus Christ my God, You alone have authority over heaven and earth. Hear Your servant, and let these lifeless idols fall, so that everyone here may know
that You alone are the true God.” As soon as the saint said this, the temple shook violently. The idols fell and shattered. The astonishing sight threw those present into a panic, and they rushed out of the temple. Some of them came to believe in Christ. Only Hilarion kept his hatred of Christ and began to blaspheme. In his confusion, he went near a statue; it fell on him, crushed him, and killed him. The saint walked out of the temple alone. No one dared seize her, and so she freely preached the Gospel, drawing many to it through the grace of God. But the new prefect, Apollonius,
arrested the saint. When neither flattery nor threats could change her mind, he first had her thrown into a great fire. But God, who kept the three young men unharmed in the furnace, also kept the saint safe. The same happened with the two lions he released against her. The God who tamed the lions in the pit at Babylon so that they did not devour Daniel also protected the saint. The lions charged fiercely, but as soon as they came near her, they grew gentle as lambs. They lay at her feet and rolled about playfully. Many who saw this wondrous miracle believed in Christ. Apollonius put them to death, some by the sword
and others by throwing them into the sea. He ordered the saint cast into prison. The next day, after another attempt to turn her from faith in Christ and love for Him had failed, he sentenced her to death by the sword. When they reached the place of execution, the saint asked her executioners to give her a little time to pray. She knelt and asked Christ not to hold her killing against them, but to receive her soul and place her in His Kingdom, where her parents were too. They had shown her the honorable path of suffering martyrdom for His name. The Lord heard her prayer, and as soon as she finished,
she came to a peaceful and blessed end. Shining angels received her soul. The executioners and the others present were astonished and said, “Great is the God of the Christians, for He has authority over life and death.” Some Christians took the saint’s precious remains and buried them, glorifying and blessing God.
How much Saint Kyriaki, whom we celebrate today, has to say to us, especially to the young, through her love for Christ, her faith and steadfastness, her purity and virginity, her patient endurance, prayer, courage, confession, and martyrdom. And how much her parents have to say to parents today. They taught her about Christ and led her on the path of perfection and salvation, living the Gospel themselves and walking the path of martyrdom. They speak to Christian parents today who want their children to be Christians, but only up to a certain point. Beyond that point, they become uneasy
and often react in ways that can hardly be called Christian. They fear their children might suffer for Christ, or become clergy, or, above all, monks or nuns. In this way they show that they want neither their children nor themselves to be Christians in the fullest sense, but simply good people. They want Christianity only as far as it makes life comfortable here, while failing to put the Kingdom of God and salvation first. Christ does not ask for partial love, but for love with our whole being: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” And as a condition of salvation, He asks for
faithfulness even to death: “Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” The saint and her parents had this faith. If we do not have it, let us at least be humble and ask for it: “Increase our faith.”
