Saint Hermias the Martyr, whom we commemorate today, lived during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, also known as Antoninus, who ruled from AD 161 to 180.

Saint Hermias served as a soldier in Comana, Cappadocia, and had grown old fighting under the banners of the Empire. Though he was a faithful and genuine Christian, he gave Caesar what belonged to Caesar, and no soldier could claim to be braver than Hermias. But when the persecution of Christians began under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, neither his long and distinguished service nor his advanced age spared him. He was arrested, brought before Governor Sebastian, and ordered to sacrifice to idols. For Hermias, this was impossible: his faith in Christ was ten thousand times more precious to him than his life. When the governor pressed him to abandon that faith, Hermias told him plainly that wise people do not exchange light for darkness. It would be far more reasonable and just, he said, for the governor to leave behind the falsehood of idolatry and come to the life and truth of Christianity. Hermias gave the same answer again, and the governor ordered him to be tortured. They crushed the holy martyr’s jaws.

They flayed the skin from his face and pulled out his teeth. Then they lit a fire and threw the Saint into it. When the martyr came out unharmed, they gave him deadly poisons to drink. He remained unharmed, and even brought the man who had made the poisons to faith in Christ. That man confessed Christ, was beheaded, and received the crown of martyrdom. They then crushed Saint Hermias’s body, placed him in boiling oil, and pierced his eyes. After that, they hung him upside down for three days. Finally, they cut off his revered head, and the blessed martyr departed for heaven, bearing his crown.

Thank you.

The Lord said that those who believe in Him and receive His divine grace through faith would be accompanied by signs showing that His grace is present and His divine uncreated energies are at work. “These signs will accompany those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them. They will lay hands on the sick, and the sick will recover.” We see these words of the Lord fulfilled in the Saints of our Church, who truly believe. In Saint Hermias, whom we commemorate today, we saw in particular the fulfillment of…

“Even if they drink anything deadly, it will not harm them.” Saint Hermias remained unharmed after drinking the deadly poison a sorcerer gave him. The sorcerer himself confirmed what had happened by coming to believe in Christ and suffering martyrdom by the sword. Even today, there are servants of the devil who, through his power and at his urging, seek to harm others, while also harming themselves. There are many kinds of sorcerers and witches who entangle the gullible and the wicked in the snares of magic. It is hard to escape those snares, and the Church does everything it can to save us from them.

The first thing we need is to recognize that the devil exists and that he is evil. Just as we Christians believe that good angels exist, we must also believe that evil demons exist and are at work. They are fallen angels who hate God and His creation, humanity, and want to destroy us. The second thing to bear in mind is that the devil is active. That means magic can take hold where he is able to act: where a person gives him an opening and where God’s grace is absent. God’s grace and the devil cannot coexist. And a person loses divine grace,

A person turns away from God through sin and, if unrepentant, remains far from Him. No satanic power can take hold of faithful, committed Christians who struggle within the Church and remain close to God and His grace, unless God permits it. This remains true even if spells are cast on them, they are given satanic herbs to drink, or they are bound through magical rituals. Magic takes hold of those who blaspheme, live immorally, and refuse to repent. A soul left unprotected by God’s grace easily falls into the devil’s hands. Then the person wastes away and suffers, unable to explain why or how. The third thing we need to bear in mind and watch out for...

The third thing to watch for is the devil’s cunning: the deceit he uses to mislead Christians and people in general, to draw them in and enslave them. He does this by mixing demonic practices with things that seem harmless or even Christian. Spitting to ward off the evil eye, for example, may seem harmless. But it degrades the person and is ultimately blasphemy against Christ, whose member and temple every baptized Christian is. Deception also involves the use of Church objects, such as icons, candles associated with the Crucified Christ, the holy zeon—the hot water used in the Divine Liturgy—antidoron, the blessed bread distributed after Liturgy, and kollyva, the boiled wheat offered at memorial services.

People are also deceived when spells and incantations—which are forms of magic—are mixed with prayers, signs of the Cross, and references to Christ, the Most Holy Theotokos, and many Saints. Deception can also come through seeking, or even obtaining, results that seem beneficial, including apparent healings. But they are beneficial only insofar as they help the devil gain a person’s trust, make that person his follower—get him in his grip, as we commonly say—and claim him as his own. In the end, he leads that person to ruin. As Saint Nicodemus the Hagiorite writes: “Do not be deceived, Christian,

Be assured: a wolf never becomes a sheep, and the devil never becomes a physician. Fire could sooner cool something, or snow warm it, than the devil could truly heal anyone. Even if he wanted to heal you, he could not, for he is utterly powerless. And even if we suppose that he could, he would not want to, because health is a good thing, and the devil hates everything good. That is why he is called a hater of good.” In the end, what mattered to Saint Hermias, and what matters to us, is more than simply escaping evil or the devil: it is gaining Christ.
