of Bithynia. His parents were noble by birth, but nobler still in character and virtue. Raised by such parents, he paid little attention to children’s games. Instead, he studied the divine words of Scripture constantly. He also wanted to learn Greek and the secular subjects, choosing from them whatever he found free from evil. With his naturally keen nous, his spiritual intellect, and through study and training, he soon learned all that was good and useful. This helped him avoid the traps and clever arguments of the enemies of Orthodoxy. Beyond this, he sought teachers and guides in the struggle for virtue, because he knew that living as a monk

without examples to follow is dangerous and full of pitfalls. Living with others experienced in virtue, and looking to them as examples, greatly encourages a person in that struggle. The fire of zeal is kindled within him, his eagerness grows, and he continually rises from lesser things to greater ones. So Gregory went to one of the finest monasteries of his time. After taking the monastic habit, he gave himself wholly to spiritual struggles. He learned about the unseen warfare of the devil and how to avoid being wounded by it. He learned about the assaults of evil logismoi, intrusive thoughts that wage war against people at every hour. There he learned to turn away from what the senses perceive and from the pull of the senses themselves:

all the sweet and pleasant things by which the human nous is deceived, poisoned, and brought down. He learned to chant, to pray, to guard his nous, to fast, and to practice restraint with moderation and humility. Gathering all these virtues within himself, Saint Gregory bore fruit thirtyfold, sixtyfold, and a hundredfold. Poverty, humility, gentleness, going unwashed, and sleeping on the ground are all worthy of praise. Which of these virtues did this holy man fail to attain? What good work did he leave undone? Who could surpass him? Yet he counted everything he had achieved as nothing. He devoted himself instead to acquiring what he still lacked.

In him were fulfilled the words of the Apostle: forgetting what lay behind, stretching toward what lay ahead, and running to win the prize of the heavenly calling. But those who have virtue are often pursued by envy. The envious devil could not bear to see the Saint, still so young, adorned with such knowledge, self-control, courage, and meekness, and undefeated by all his schemes. Seeing that this holy man was an example that benefited everyone, what did the devil devise? He planted a suspicion among certain corrupt liars that Saint Gregory had stolen some sacred vessels that had gone missing. They slandered this holy man of God

and were ready to swear oaths to support their false testimony. Some foolish people thought this was a victory for the devil over the Saint, but those with knowledge and discernment saw it as a ridiculous ploy. Saint Gregory understood the devil’s scheme and left for another monastery, so that those slanderers would not bring still greater punishment in Hell upon themselves. A few days later, the person who had stolen the sacred vessels was discovered, and the devil’s malice became plain to everyone. At the other monastery, where his brother by birth also lived, Gregory again submitted himself to obedience and took up the first struggles of ascesis, the ascetic discipline.

He obeyed the abbot and his fellow monks. He fasted, kept vigil, chanted, prayed, served, and humbled himself. So the whole brotherhood came to love him. Humility, simplicity of character, and a modest way of life make a person dear to others, while pride and insolence stir up anger and hatred. After the Saint had spent a long time there, he took the great and angelic schema and became a great schema monk. Then the abbot and the whole brotherhood strongly urged him to become a priest. But the holy man would not consent, because he knew the purity and high standard of life required of a priest.

When they urged him again, almost pressing him to accept, he consented, reflecting that obedience is the foundation of every virtue. He did not receive the priesthood as something he deserved, for he always cast down that vain thought. He accepted it as a service. Three years later, longing to live in hesychia, in inner stillness, he left the monastery to be alone. He knew that when someone lives in stillness and devotes himself to prayer, his senses are freed from the things they perceive. Then his nous, his spiritual intellect, is free to advance toward theoria, the contemplation of spiritual realities. Through that contemplation he rises to the love of God, and through that love he delights and rejoices in God’s glory and beauty.

As he beholds the glory of God, he loves God still more. Thus the love of God and the vision of His glory each give rise to the other. The holy man climbed a mountain, built himself an ascetic hut, and lived there, freeing his nous, his spiritual intellect, from the senses and the things they perceive. In this way he was united with God, from whom he was never parted. United with God, he became God’s friend. And because friends share what they have, God shared His Mysteries with His friend, Saint Gregory. Gregory thus became a beholder of the divine Mysteries: what was to come was revealed to him, and he came to know it.

Foreknowledge of the future was not the only reward of his virtue. He also worked extraordinary miracles. Kings and rulers entrust their treasures to faithful friends, making them keepers of their wealth and stewards of their possessions, and through them they give others what they need. God, too, acts in this way. This holy man loved God and was loved by Him, as God Himself promises in His holy Gospel when He says that He loves those who love Him and keep His commandments. So God entrusted His spiritual Mysteries to Gregory. This came through much labor, sweat, and struggle.

Gregory set before everyone, as though on a rich table, the spiritual food each person needed. Those who needed counsel he advised with great wisdom. When someone needed a word of foresight or discernment, he humbly and modestly revealed what lay ahead. When the sick came to him, he did not send them away empty-handed or with their hopes dashed. He raised his eyes to God, laid his hands on them with great humility, and healed them. The wicked devil, wanting to wage war against Saint Gregory, persuaded some people to say that the Saint’s foreknowledge did not come through the grace of the Holy Spirit,

but through the power of the devil and the art of magic. So they brought thieves, robbers of sacred things, and other wrongdoers to the Saint. They tested him by asking what kind of person each one was. The holy man knew their ill intent, but he did not remain silent, lest he give them an opening to accuse and mock the divine gifts.

He revealed what kind of person each one was and the malicious purpose that had brought them to him. Even this did not put an end to their wickedness. They found a prostitute, paid her, and sent her to the holy man to arouse desire in him and defile him by any means she could. She went to him and tempted him, but he tried through counsel and instruction to guide her toward self-control.

She would not change, and the holy man’s words did not benefit her. Suddenly she became possessed by a demon. She fell to the ground, foamed at the mouth, ground her teeth, and made all the disordered movements of a person possessed. When those who had sent her saw this, they repented and begged the holy man to have compassion on her and heal her. At once he raised his hands to Heaven and prayed fervently to God, and the woman was healed. He told her to live chastely from then on, lest something worse happen to her, and to cleanse her soul through fasting, prayer, and all the other virtues. With this guidance toward metanoia, repentance, and with much more counsel besides, he sent her away in peace. In this way the prostitute came to her senses

and, having repented and changed her former way of life, spent the rest of her days in purity and sincere repentance. Let us speak of another scheme the devil devised against the holy man. The enemy of all that is good wanted to trouble and harm the Saint. He stirred up some clergy who envied Gregory, and they went to the bishop of Nicomedia with many accusations and slanders against him. The bishop was simple-hearted and, as the saying goes, an innocent man believes every word. So he believed the clergy.

He sent men to the Saint, ordering him to come as quickly as possible. Gregory understood the devil’s scheme and the slander against him. He told the messengers to return at once, for he would reach the bishop before they did. Worn down by his many ascetic labors and hardships, he mounted a horse and rode straight toward the bishop across the sea. And what a wonder! The seawater grew firm like dry land, and the Saint and his horse crossed to the opposite shore, where the bishop of Nicomedia was, without even the horse’s hooves getting wet. When the bishop saw the holy man riding over the sea as though his horse were walking on solid ground, he remembered Peter walking upon the waves. He fell to the ground in reverence, glorifying God and saying, ‘Blessed are You, O Lord, and greatly glorified.’

‘Today You have shown us another Peter. How wondrous are Your works!’ When the holy man drew near, the bishop fell at his feet and received him with great reverence and honor. He almost thanked those who had slandered Gregory, since they had given him the chance to see such a Saint and worker of miracles. He also begged Gregory to forgive their sin. Those who had accused him saw the miracle, repented, and tearfully asked his forgiveness. From then on they revered and honored him as a godly and heavenly man, a servant and friend of God. The holy man returned to his hut and resumed his customary ascetic struggles.

A husband and wife boarded a small boat and set out with a fair wind. Then a violent gust struck, so fierce that it broke the boat apart and scattered its pieces. The good couple fell into the sea and called on the holy man by name to help them and save them from danger. Swift to help, he appeared to them, reached out his hand, and saved them from drowning when they had no hope of rescue. Once safe, they gave heartfelt thanks to God and to His servant Gregory. Fishermen, too, received help from the holy man. They had cast their nets into the sea many times and hauled them up empty. Then they remembered him, called on him by name in faith, and cast their nets again. And what a wonder!

They caught so many fish that they could not pull the nets in. Other fishermen came to help, and together they brought the nets ashore full of fish. They glorified the Saint and told everyone of the miracle. Let us mention another wondrous event. A wealthy, generous, and virtuous woman had a snake enter her body. As the days passed, her belly grew larger, for the snake, it seemed, was growing inside her. Setting aside the doctors’ remedies, she hurried to the holy man. She fell at his feet and, with tears and faith, begged him to deliver her from the affliction that had come upon her. He had compassion on her and raised his hands to heaven.

For a long while he prayed to God with deep humility and a contrite heart. And what a wonder! The snake died and came out of her lifeless. Freed from danger, the woman thanked God and His holy servant. The holy man also rebuked a bear that had been coming down and causing damage to nearby communities, and drove it away from the area. When he had completed his ascetic struggles and, as it is written, ‘being made perfect in a short time, he fulfilled long years,’ he reached the age of fifty and longed to depart this world and go to Christ. He fell ill and took to his bed. Then he instructed his disciples to keep the good deposit of the faith unwaveringly

and never to abandon the ascesis, the ascetic discipline, and the crucifying of the flesh that they had promised God to maintain throughout this life. After giving them many other spiritual instructions and embracing them, he left his body behind and went to Christ, whom he longed for.

Gregory, whose memory the Church celebrates today, truly was and remains a Saint in the fullest sense of the word. The miracles God worked through him bear witness to this. He reached the highest spiritual state, theosis (divinisation), by following a way of healing the soul that is lived and taught within the Church. Today we live in an age of constant activity and movement, believing that these will bring well-being to individuals and society. Yet this draws us away from God, the source of true life, the life in God for which we were created.

This wears us out. So we look for quiet in nature, in simpler ways of living, or in isolation, yet we find no deep rest. We have seen Saint Gregory long for, seek, and live in hesychia, inner stillness. In the Church’s ascetic life, hesychia means far more than escaping noise and problems around us. A Christian seeking the spiritual life tries to be free from outward distractions and to find inner stillness amid the logismoi, the intrusive thoughts that trouble the heart. The aim is more than rest: it is to give undivided attention

to the work of prayer, the heart of the spiritual life. Such a person leaves behind the world and its concerns to rise toward God and be united with Him. This is work, perhaps the most demanding work of all. Yet it brings deep and genuine rest, making it a wise and fruitful path. The foremost example of this noetic stillness is the Theotokos (God-bearer). According to Saint Gregory Palamas, she alone, from her earliest childhood, lived in stillness beyond what is natural. She alone was thus counted worthy, while remaining a virgin, to carry in her womb the God-Man, Christ, the Word (Logos).

This blessed inner stillness is something we too should seek and cultivate, each of us as far as our circumstances allow.
