Today, September 30, our Church commemorates Saint Gregory, the hieromartyr and bishop of Greater Armenia; Saint Hripsime, Saint Gayane, and their fellow martyrs, thirty-two virgin martyrs; the seventy holy martyrs who suffered with Saint Hripsime; two women monastic martyrs; the martyr Stratonikos; Saint Mardonios the Martyr; the thousand holy martyrs; Saint Gregory of Istompotamos Pesoma; and Saint Michael the Wonderworker, the first Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia.
Gregory, the radiant light of Greater Armenia, was born into a royal family in AD 240. His father, Anak, was a relative of Kousaros, king of Greater Armenia. After making an agreement with the Persian king Artashir, Anak murdered Kousaros. The Armenian nobles avenged the king’s death: Anak and his accomplice were killed, along with Anak’s whole family, except for two children. One was in Persia. The other was Saint Gregory, who was then in Caesarea of Cappadocia. There he studied, came to faith in Christ, and was baptized.
Tiridates, the son of the murdered Kousaros, also went to Caesarea after being driven out by the Persian king. Gregory sincerely condemned his father’s wicked deed and made this clear to Tiridates. When Tiridates became seriously ill, Gregory showed him great love. It was clear that no hostility remained between them. Later, with Roman help, Tiridates regained his father’s throne. After some years, Saint Gregory, now a priest, felt it his duty to go to Armenia and work for the faith of Christ. His labors there bore fruit. He worked with great zeal and wisdom.
Every day, more people joined the Church. Although Tiridates was a pagan, he let the Saint carry on his work freely. But then he changed his approach. One day he invited Gregory to a festival of Artemis and asked him to take part in the sacrifices. “I am not asking you to deny your faith,” he said, “but I want you to honor mine as well.” Gregory tried in vain to explain why he could neither attend nor take part in the sacrifices. It seems Tiridates had been waiting for such an opportunity. He insulted Gregory and ordered his arrest. When he failed to make him a pagan, he subjected him to many punishments and tortures.
They hung him upside down by one foot and beat him with heavy rods. They filled the air beneath him with smoke from foul manure, drove iron nails into the soles of his feet and forced him to run. They crushed his head with an instrument and burned it with hot ashes. They poured caustic liquids into his nose, tore his sides with iron claws, dragged him over iron spikes, and poured molten lead on him. The Saint endured it all with courage, thanking and glorifying God. Finally, Tiridates ordered his hands, feet, and neck bound, and had him thrown into a pit used for prisoners.
The pit was full of filth, worms, and deadly snakes. No one could have borne even a day there, yet the Saint remained for fifteen whole years. A widow secretly fed him: an angel of God had told her to lower a little bread to him each day so that he would not starve. Meanwhile, Tiridates became possessed by a demon, lost his reason, and was disfigured. Many of his nobles suffered a similar affliction. Tiridates had a sister named Kousarodoukta. In a dream she heard a voice say, “Unless Gregory is brought out of the pit, neither your brother nor the nobles will be healed.” The dream came to her many times.
At last, Gregory was freed from that terrible pit. Tiridates and the nobles fell at his feet, begging him to deliver them from their demonic affliction. Gregory first arranged for the remains of the saints who had suffered martyrdom with Saint Hripsime to be buried with honor. Then he prayed that God would bring the king and nobles to their senses. He urged them to abandon their evil deeds and believe in the true God, and promised that, if they were baptized, they would receive healing in soul and body. They all believed and declared their faith.
They showed their repentance through their deeds, and they were healed. Seeing the miracles, crowds of people also asked to be baptized. They tore down the pagan temples, built churches, and endowed them with property and goods. Remembering his sins and the saints of God whom he had killed, Tiridates sought to make amends through good works, setting an example for others. Since they had no bishop there, they wanted Saint Gregory to become their bishop. So they sent him to Caesarea, where Metropolitan Leontius consecrated him. On his return, the Saint baptized the king, his wife and sister, the nobles, and all the people.
In other cities too, he celebrated the Divine Liturgy, baptized people, ordained priests, built monasteries, and founded schools. Armenia became a center from which the light of Christ spread to the Persians, the Medes, and the Assyrians. Through the good leadership of the Saint and the king, deep peace prevailed throughout Armenia, and the people lived devoutly and in a way pleasing to God. Many became monks, and within a few years four hundred bishops were consecrated. Saint Gregory then wished to withdraw. He went to live in stillness, leading a strict ascetic life. At the king’s request, the Saint consecrated his own son Aristakes, a man known for his virtue, as Metropolitan of Armenia. Gregory traveled throughout the country with him and strengthened the people in their faith.
He then returned to his hermitage. A short time later, on September 30, sometime after the year 325, he departed to the Lord, where he enjoys the rich reward of his labors.
Today, in the account of Saint Gregory’s life, we saw the faith of Christ spread to another country and another people. We saw it and rejoiced. And we see it with joy today, as Orthodoxy continues to spread.
Because we are in Christ, and others are in Christ too, we feel that they are our brothers and sisters, one with us. And that is right. The Church does not abolish our homeland or our nation; she rises above them and brings them together. To confine the Church within the narrow boundaries of homeland and nation is ethnophyletism.
Heresy separates people from the truth and from the Church. Ethnophyletism, too, is a kind of heresy. It is a renewed form of the Jewish temptation: the Jews wanted Christ only for their own nation. When we make Christ into a national deity and confine Him to the aims of one ethnic group, we deny the universality of the Church. Saint Justin Popovich stresses: “The Church is universal, catholic, divine and human, eternal. Therefore it is blasphemy, unforgivable blasphemy against Christ and the Holy Spirit,”
“to make the Church a national institution, to narrow her down to small, limited, temporary national aims and methods. Her purpose reaches beyond nations. It is universal and embraces all humanity: to unite all people in Christ, without exception for nationality, ethnicity, or social standing.” The Ecumenical Patriarchate expressed this universality, expresses it now, and must continue to express it. At a local Synod in Constantinople in 1892, it condemned ethnophyletism as utterly foreign and unthinkable, wholly unheard of and without precedent in the Orthodox Church.
