Saint Conon the Martyr lived in the time of the Holy Apostles. His parents were named Nestor and Nada. When he came of age, his parents urged him to marry a woman named Anna. But he persuaded her to choose virginity with him. So they lived together as brother and sister, devoted to virginity and purity. Saint Conon had been guided in this way by Michael, the Archangel and Commander of the Heavenly Hosts. It is said that Michael appeared to him in shining garments, taught him the faith in Christ, baptized him in the name of the Holy Trinity, the source of life, and gave him the spotless Holy Gifts.
Throughout Saint Conon’s life, the Archangel continued to stand beside him unseen and granted him the divine uncreated energies by which he worked extraordinary miracles. Through these miracles, Conon persuaded his wife Anna to live in virginity and brought his parents to faith in Christ. It is said that the pagans seized his father, Nestor, because he confessed Christ as God, and that Nestor was counted worthy of a martyr’s death.
In a contest concerning their so-called gods, they agreed that whoever reached the cave first would prove that his God was greater. The pagans raced there on horseback, while the Saint went on foot. Even so, he arrived first. He was so far ahead that he met them still riding toward the cave as he was coming back from it. The pagans marveled at what they had seen, but their hearts remained hard. They asked the idol, which housed a demon, which God was greater. Then the Saint commanded the idol to come down, together with the demon inside it. The demon came down
and, approaching the Saint’s feet, cried out, “There is one God: Christ, whom you proclaim.” Then the pagans believed in Christ and cried out, “There is one true God, the God of Conon! The God of Conon has won!” The people of that region would shout these words whenever they celebrated Saint Conon’s feast. It is also said that God gave Conon such power and authority over demons that he sent some to cultivate the land and others to guard its crops. He shut still others in clay vessels, sealed them, and buried them beneath the foundations of his house. As for his martyrdom,
it happened in this way. Governor Magnus came to Isauria under imperial orders, and Saint Conon was arrested and brought before him. Conon confessed Christ and refused to sacrifice to idols, so he was severely beaten and bound. When the people heard, they rushed to rescue him and kill the governor, for the Saint had brought them all to faith in Christ. The governor learned of this and fled. The people freed Conon, wiped the blood from his body, and carried him home. He lived another two years and then departed to the Lord. It is also said that, after his death,
the Christians began turning his house into a church. While digging, they found the clay vessels in which the evil spirits had been shut up. The builders opened one of them because its weight made them think it contained gold. The demons came out like fire. The builders fell to the ground, the church building collapsed, and the wood and ropes burned. After sunset, no one could go near the place. Some time later, through the Saint’s intercessions and the fasting and prayer of the Christians there, the place was freed from the demons’ disturbance.
Mark the Ascetic lived in the fifth century after Christ. He worked diligently at studying the divine Scriptures and reached great heights of ascetic discipline and virtue. We see this both in his writings, which are full of wisdom and spiritual benefit, and in the grace to work miracles that was given to him. Here is one of those miracles. While blessed Mark was living in stillness, striving in his cell and attending to his soul, a hyena came to him with her blind cub. By her humble manner she seemed to beg the Saint to have compassion on her young and heal its eyes. The Saint spat on the cub’s blind eyes and prayed,
and the cub was healed. A few days later, the hyena brought the Saint the skin of a large ram as a gift of thanks for healing her young. He would not accept it until she showed by her gestures that she would no longer harm the sheep of the poor. If Saint Mark had such compassion for creatures without reason, how much more compassion must he have had for people, who share our own nature and whom we are called to treat with mercy? He was so pure that the priest of the skete said he had never given Mark Holy Communion with his own hands.
Whenever Mark came forward to receive Holy Communion, an angel of the Lord gave it to him. The priest would see the angel’s arm, from the elbow down, holding the liturgical spoon and giving Communion to the venerable Mark. Mark left the world and its concerns at the age of forty. After sixty years of ascetic discipline, he departed to the Lord. He was short, beardless, and bald, yet the grace of the Holy Spirit shone through him.
This venerable Mark was a disciple of Saint John Chrysostom. He became a great writer on the ascetic life and wrote many works. His writings were so valuable that people used to say, “Sell everything and buy Mark.” We will give a few of the two hundred chapters of On the Spiritual Law in translation and close today’s account of the saints with them. Mark the Ascetic writes: “In every undertaking, let God come first, for He is the source of every good thing. Then your aim will be in keeping with His will.” The humble person who labors sincerely in the spiritual life
studies the divine Scriptures and applies all their teachings to himself, rather than to his neighbor. Take care not to become a disciple of someone who praises himself, lest you learn pride instead of humility. When you shed tears in prayer, take care not to grow proud, for those tears are not your own doing. Christ has touched your spiritual eyes and given you inner sight. Once, a man intended to do something evil, but first he prayed as he usually did. Because of that prayer, God arranged matters so that he did not do the evil deed, and afterward the man thanked the Lord from his heart. If a merciful and compassionate heart will receive mercy from God,
it follows that a heart without mercy or compassion will not receive it. The perfection of the law in Christ is hidden mysteriously in the Cross of Christ: in a person’s complete sacrifice of self out of love for Christ and neighbor. We come to know the law of freedom by reading it, but we understand its depth by carrying out the commandments. Its fulfillment, however, comes through the grace of Christ. When we make ourselves keep all God’s commandments conscientiously, we will understand that the law of the Lord is without fault in the good we do by human effort. Yet without God’s mercy and grace, those deeds
remain incomplete. Just as God has prepared eternal blessings for those who suffer here, so afflictions await those who live for pleasure and empty glory. God protects the person who suffers injustice at the hands of others and bears it willingly, so that he does not fall into sin. God also gives him consolation in proportion to his suffering. Whoever believes what Christ taught about eternal recompense bears every injustice from others with joy, according to the measure of his faith. Whoever prays for those who wrong him strikes the demons without mercy; whoever fights against those who wrong him is wounded by the demons.
People’s insults bring sorrow to the heart, but they purify those who bear them willingly. When no one is wronging you, at least bear the temptations that come your way willingly. And because you will give an account to God, take care to share what you have in excess, lest it be counted against you as greed.
Do not think or do anything without considering whether God wills it, for a traveler with no direction will labor in vain. A person who sins without being driven by the weakness of his nature or by circumstances finds it hard to return. God sees him fall without the slightest resistance and, in His justice, does not help him. One passion alone keeps us from doing the good we are able to do: neglect. Prayer and almsgiving heal this passion. If you want to heal your soul of the passions that afflict it, pay attention to your conscience. Do what it tells you, and you will benefit. Only God and a person’s conscience know what is hidden in that person’s heart. So let each of us heed both voices and be corrected. Do not excuse yourself by saying you do not know what you ought to do and therefore cannot be held responsible for failing to do it.
If you did the good you already know to do, the rest would be revealed to you afterward, just as someone passes from one room into another and gradually comes to know what is there. It does you no good to learn the next things in theory before you have learned the first things by doing them, for knowledge puffs us up if we do not put it into action. Whoever keeps one of Christ’s commandments should expect to be tested because of it, for love of Christ is tested through temptations. Empty glory and pleasure are the cause of every evil. Whoever does not hate these passions cannot cut off any passion. Love of money, empty glory, and pleasure
we must hate with all our strength, for they are mothers of evil and enemies of virtue. To fight these passions, we are commanded not to love the world or the things in it. This does not mean hating God’s creation without thought. It means cutting off the occasions that feed those three passions. If someone causes you loss, insults you, or drives you away, do not dwell on what happened. Look instead to what will come of it. Then you will discover that bearing these humiliations has brought you many blessings, both in this life and in the life to come.
