Saint Chryse, virgin martyr and spotless bride of Christ God, the heavenly King, came from Meglen in Macedonia, in the region known in ancient times and today as Almopia, in the district of Pella. She was born in a village called Slatena. Her family was poor: her father was an unknown Christian of little means, with four daughters including Chryse. Yet as poor as she was in possessions, she was rich in gifts of soul and body. She had fervent faith in God, virginity, and purity of life, as well as beauty of face. Because of that beauty, the blessed woman was called to end her earthly life in glorious and courageous martyrdom.
It happened in this way. A Turkish man saw how beautiful she was and was seized by fleshly, satanic desire. He began looking for an opportunity to carry out the evil purpose he had set his mind on.
One day, Saint Chryse went out with other women to gather wood. When that man heard of it, he took several other Turkish men to the place where they were cutting wood, seized her, and brought her to his house. First he tried flattery and promises to change her mind and bring her into his religion. He told her that if she converted, he would take her as his lawful wife. At the same time, he threatened her with terrible suffering if she refused. But Chryse was golden not only in name but also in spirit. She felt no fear. Silently calling on the name of the Lord Jesus for help, she said with great courage, “I believe in my Christ and worship Him. He alone is my bridegroom, and I will never deny Him, whatever torments you inflict on me.” When the men heard this, they thought they could not persuade her on their own and turned to other means. Believing that women were better able to deceive other women,
they handed Saint Chryse over to their wives and ordered them to persuade her by every means. The women tried everything they could think of to change her mind. For almost six whole months they urged the blessed Chryse to accept their faith, but in vain. She stood firm on the unshakable rock of faith in Christ. Then they summoned the martyr’s parents and sisters. With grave threats, they ordered them to urge their daughter to convert. Otherwise, they said, they would kill her and harm and punish them as well.
So her parents and sisters came to the martyr. Fear compelled them to do so, though they did not want to. They said and did everything that might soften even the hardest heart. Weeping, they pleaded, “Our dear daughter, have pity on yourself and on us, your parents and sisters. We are all in danger of being destroyed because of you. Deny Christ outwardly, so that you and we may be spared. Christ is merciful and will forgive this sin, committed under necessity and force.” Consider how fierce this battle was, devised by the devil against the martyr. Think what thoughts and feelings of compassion the tears of her mother, father, and sisters might have stirred in the tender young woman. Yet the power of Christ overcame this attack and this scheme of the devil as well.
Noblehearted and discerning, Chryse’s heart burned with love for Christ. The words and tears of her parents and sisters did not sway her. She rose above the claims of flesh and blood, beyond the ordinary bonds of nature. Turning to them, she spoke these remarkable and wise words: “You who urge me to deny Christ, the true God, are no longer my parents and sisters, and I will no longer acknowledge you as such. In your place, I have my Lord Jesus Christ as Father, the Lady Theotokos (God-bearer) as Mother, and the Saints as my brothers and sisters.” With this answer she sent them away. What noble courage!
What true love for God! In this Saint, the words of David the prophet and king were truly fulfilled: “My father and my mother have forsaken me, but the Lord has taken me in.” And so were the Lord’s words: “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.” When the men of another faith saw that they had failed to turn Saint Chryse from faith in Christ, they gave up flattery and persuasion and began to torture the martyr terribly. At first,
for three whole months they beat her with rods every day. Then they flayed her, leaving strips of skin hanging from her body for her to see, hoping to frighten her. Blood flowed from her wounds and reddened the ground. Next they heated a spit until it was glowing and drove it through the martyr’s head from one ear to the other, while smoke came from her nose and mouth. Though she suffered torments that could have broken even the strongest men, the martyr of Christ endured them with great courage. She drew strength from the power of the Cross and from her deep, heartfelt love for Christ. Then Saint Chryse heard that Hieromonk Timothy, the former superior of Stavronikita Monastery on the Holy Mountain, was nearby.
He was her spiritual father, so she sent word through a Christian asking him to pray to God that she might be counted worthy to complete the course of her martyrdom in a way pleasing to Him. At last, her cruel, hardhearted tormentors, still unsatisfied after all they had done to her, wondered how she could remain alive. Enraged and unwilling to be overcome by a young woman, they hung Christ’s little lamb from a wild pear tree. Then they rushed at her with their knives and cut apart the virgin’s sacred body. And so good Chryse, tested by so many torments and made radiant like gold in a furnace, gave up her holy soul
into the hands of her immortal bridegroom. She received a double crown: one for her virginity and one for her martyrdom in blood. Now she joins the wise virgins and those who have won the martyr’s crown in their joyful celebration at the right hand of her bridegroom, Christ. With Him she reigns forever and ever. Some Christians secretly took the remains of the courageous virgin martyr and buried them with honor and reverence.
Natural and spiritual kinship. Natural kinship is a bond arising from shared human nature and common blood. Spiritual kinship is a spiritual bond: communion with God and participation in His uncreated grace. This bond and communion come through faith, which is more than accepting a truth with the intellect. It means bringing our whole being into accord with that truth. “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the Word (Logos) of God and do it.”
Just as God is greater than man, spiritual kinship is greater than natural kinship. Through natural kinship we remain human. Through spiritual kinship we become partakers of the divine nature. We become gods by grace: we receive God’s grace and are transformed by it with a good and divine change. We might even say that the ultimate purpose of natural kinship is to lead us into spiritual kinship. That is when natural kinship finds its true worth. But when natural kinship stands in the way of spiritual kinship, obstructing our relationship and communion with God, it becomes a harmful bond,
one we must break. This helps us understand why Saint Chryse sent her relatives away and severed her family ties when they advised her to deny Christ. Parents, too, must take care never to stand in the way of their children’s salvation.
They must love their children with understanding. And what they give them must be truly good and truly beneficial. First and foremost, they must give them Christ.
