Aquilina lived at the end of the third century after Christ, when the emperor was Diocletian, a pagan and a fierce persecutor of Christians. She came from the city of Byblos in Palestine and was the daughter of a ruler named Eutholmius. At five years old, she was baptized by the local bishop, Ephthalios. This good child grew up in a Christian home, surrounded by prayer and virtue. She was taught the truth of Christ and gave her whole heart to the Lord. By the age of ten, Aquilina had grown so much spiritually, and her zeal was so great, that she taught girls her own age to...
turn away from the worship of idols and embrace faith in Christ. Because of this, a pagan named Nicodemus reported her to the governor, Ulusianus. He summoned her and asked whether the accusations were true. “Yes,” she said. “I believe with all my soul in Christ, who is the only true God. I urge my friends, and all people, to believe in Him and be saved, for Christ is humanity’s only salvation.” The governor immediately ordered her to be tortured. The executioners began beating her mercilessly. They showed no pity for her young age. Her small, frail body was covered
with wounds from their blows. But the Lord, as He does for all the martyrs, stood beside her, unseen by the unbelievers. He strengthened Aquilina and gave her courage and patient endurance. The brutal torturers kept striking the young girl. To make her suffering still worse, they took red-hot skewers and pierced her ears. Blood flowed from the Saint’s nose and mouth. Still, she would not deny Christ, and she continually called on Him for help. “Lord,” she said, “help me. I will never deny You, never.” Aquilina’s courageous confession enraged Ulusianus even more, and he ordered her to be beheaded with a sword.
Aquilina’s tender body fell lifeless to the ground. But her soul, pure and white, flew to heaven, near the Lord of Hosts and Glory, where she rejoices in the eternal blessedness of God’s Kingdom.
Blessed James, whose memory the Church also celebrates today, turned away from the world and gave all his possessions to the poor, spending none of them on bodily pleasures. Afterward, though, with the help of the devil, who hates humanity, he became so full of pride that he dared to say, “Who knows better than I do how I should be saved?” So he undertook many great spiritual struggles, but he did not ask those with experience for guidance, as the holy Fathers teach us to do. He followed his own judgment, his own will, and his own self-satisfaction. That is why the demons deceived him. One night, a demon appeared to him in a dream, disguised as an angel of light, and said:
“Righteous James, holy and virtuous James, you are in no way inferior to Paul. You can meet any Saint as an equal, or even as his superior. Tomorrow night Jesus Christ will appear to you.” James woke full of joy. When night came, he lit candles in his cell, filled it with incense and fragrant oils, and waited for Christ. He rejoiced, thinking that this visit would formally confirm his holiness. Around midnight, in the deep silence, he heard a sound. James started. He was about to receive God Himself in his cell! And when the footsteps reached his door...
he bowed down. But suddenly, as he rose, horror seized him. Before him stood the Antichrist, surrounded by a splendid appearance and glory, but laughing at him and mocking him. The devil struck James on the forehead. By God’s providence, he went no further: he turned back and vanished. In the morning, this victim of pride went to a virtuous elder. The elder rebuked him with love, but also spoke bitterly of the foolish pride that had stripped him of God’s grace and robbed his virtues of their worth. He told James plainly that he had not reached the heights of holiness but had fallen into the depths of misery. He needed deep metanoia, repentance, and humility to find mercy before the Lord.
James listened to these painful words without arguing. He wept over his fall and lamented how blind he had been. What, then, should he do? After giving him much counsel, the elder sent him to a communal monastery. James obeyed. There he served in the kitchen for seven years with great humility and obedience. Then he went to live alone in a cell for another seven years, doing a modest amount of handiwork and carefully keeping the rule of prayer he had been given. In this way he learned God’s sure path: to ask for counsel, to follow the way of obedience and humility. He grew spiritually and became a wonderworker. And when he had lived out his life in this way,
he departed to the Lord.
“Let the children come to Me.” Today, in the account of Saint Aquilina’s life, we have seen the holy life of a little girl. But she is not the only child who became a saint. Many boys and girls, in ancient times and more recently, from infancy through adolescence, have shone like bright stars. Through their holy lives, their great spiritual struggles, and even their deaths as martyrs, they brought glory to themselves and to the Church. Yet how many children today know nothing of the Church or of the countless treasures she gives us—treasures that are real, priceless, and eternal?
Children cannot discover on their own the spiritual gifts that come from above. Instead of reading, hearing, or watching things that are sacred and good for their souls, they absorb things from television that are not only empty but poisonous. Many children hear nothing about God and are drawn, to one degree or another, toward pleasure-seeking, violence, and paganism. That is why they need their parents’ help in this, and the help of adults more generally.
A child needs to find the right path early and impress upon the soul the values that will guide the whole of life. If children do not come to know and love Christ and the spiritual life while they are still innocent, it is hard for them to enter the hidden path of faith—unless great pain and suffering shake them awake and lead their souls there.
Parents who love their children protect them from anything that threatens their physical health. Those who truly love them must be especially careful to protect them from spiritual poisons. They should give them good spiritual nourishment—Orthodox teaching—as well as wholesome food for the body. A good children’s book is a pleasure to read and can edify children and those who have long since grown up. Books about the lives of the Saints are especially helpful: they help children come to know
God’s friends and develop a personal bond and friendship with them. What better friends could children find than the Saints? These friends will never betray them; they will always protect them and do them good. Why, then, should children not become friends of the Saints and the angels of God? Could they find any greater or better help than this?

στην ανάπτυξη προσωπικής σχέσεως και φιλίας με τους φίλους του Θεού. Ποιους καλύτερους φίλους μπορούν να βρουν από τους Αγίους; Αυτοί οι φίλοι ποτέ δεν θα τα προδώσουν και πάντα θα τα προστατεύουν και θα τα ευεργετούν. Γιατί λοιπόν να μην γίνουν τα παιδιά φίλοι των Αγίων και των Αγγέλων του Θεού; Υπάρχει σημαντικότερη και καλύτερη βοήθεια από αυτή;
