During the reign of Vladimir, the devout grand prince of the Russian land, God was pleased to raise up a light for His Church and a teacher of monks: our venerable and God-bearing Father Anthony. Saint Anthony, known in the world as Antipas, was born in the town of Liubech in 983. His devout parents taught him the fear of God, and from an early age he longed to become a monk. God guided him to Greece for this purpose.
Without delay, he left his homeland and went to Constantinople. From there he traveled to the Holy Mountain, sacred Mount Athos. He visited its monasteries and saw many monks whose lives followed the example of the angels.
Saint Anthony’s love for Christ burned still more brightly. He came to Esphigmenou Monastery and begged the abbot to tonsure him as a monk. Abbot Theoktistos, a great ascetic who had been granted the gift of foresight, recognized Anthony’s virtues and foresaw his holy life. He granted Anthony’s request and tonsured him, first teaching him what he needed to know about monastic life. From then on, Saint Anthony strove to please God in everything. He pushed himself in his ascetic struggles with perfect obedience and patient endurance, and soon became an example of virtuous living to all the brothers. Some time passed. Then something happened.
The abbot received a divine command to send the monk Anthony back to Russia. He called him and said, “Anthony, go to Russia and become an example and a spiritual pillar for the people there. May the blessing of the Holy Mountain be with you.” Saint Anthony received his abbot’s command as though it had come from the mouth of God. He set out for Russia and reached Kyiv around 1013. Looking for a place to settle, he visited the monasteries nearby, but remained at none of them. This was God’s will. He went into the surrounding hills, to secluded places, and found a cave that the Varangians had once dug.
He prayed and settled there, living with great restraint and ascetic discipline. After the death of the devout Vladimir in 1015, his eldest son, the impious Sviatopolk, took the throne of Kyiv. To hold all his father’s lands for himself, he killed his younger brothers Boris and Gleb, making martyrs of them. He also launched a bloody persecution of the holy men of the Church. Because of that bloodshed, Saint Anthony had to leave once more for the Holy Mountain and return to his holy elder, Theoktistos. This time, though, he did not remain long in the brotherhood at Esphigmenou.
Having come to know the spiritual sweetness of sacred hesychia, or inner stillness, he received the abbot’s blessing and withdrew to Mount Samareia above the monastery, where a church dedicated to him stands today. Meanwhile, in 1019, the devout ruler Yaroslav the Wise defeated Sviatopolk in battle, took Kyiv, and ascended the throne as grand prince. Sviatopolk fled and died in exile on the steppes of Bohemia that same year. During the reign of the wise Yaroslav, a priest named Hilarion became renowned for his devotion, ascetic life, and deep knowledge of the Scriptures. We know little else about him, except that around 1040...
...he was serving as a priest in the village of Berestovo. From there he went to the Dnieper River, to the hill where the Old Monastery of the Caves was later built. At that time, the place was covered in dense forest. There the priest Hilarion dug a small cave, about twelve feet deep.
He began his ascetic struggle there in secret, singing hymns and praying. At that time, God prompted the abbot of the Athonite monastery of Esphigmenou to send Saint Anthony to Russia again. He called Anthony and said, “Anthony, it is God’s will that you return to your homeland. May the blessing of the Holy Mountain be with you.
“Go in peace, my son, and know that many will be granted the grace to receive the holy monastic habit from your hands.” Having received the prayer and blessing of his elder, Saint Anthony left Athos again and went to Kyiv. God guided his steps to the hill where the priest Hilarion had dug his small cave. It now stood empty, for blessed Hilarion had been granted the grace to ascend the metropolitan throne of Kyiv in 1051. Saint Anthony found great peace at the sight of that place. It reminded him of his beloved Athos: steep and inaccessible from the river, wild and difficult to cross because of the dense forest that covered it. He knelt and prayed to God with tears: “Lord,
“May the blessing of the Holy Mountain and the prayer of my holy elder shelter this place. Strengthen me with Your grace, so that I may stay here and live an ascetic life.” So Saint Anthony made his home in that cave. He began a severe ascetic life, devoted without ceasing to prayer. He ate dry bread and drank water, and even that only every two or three days. Once, absorbed for many days and nights in theoria, the contemplation of God, he ate nothing for an entire week. Many people who heard of his poverty and hardships came to the cave with everything he needed and asked for his blessing. Some, captivated by his holy life, wanted to stay with him and undertake the ascetic life under his spiritual guidance. Among them were...
...the blessed priest Nikon and Saint Theodosius. In 1054, the devout ruler Yaroslav died, and his eldest son, Iziaslav, took the throne of Kyiv. By then, Saint Anthony’s fame had spread throughout the Russian land, much as the fame of his namesake, Anthony the Great, had once spread in Egypt. Word of the holy life of the monk Anthony Pechersky, meaning “of the Caves,” as he was known, reached Iziaslav himself. The prince went with his retinue to receive Anthony’s blessing. By the customs of the time, this was a mark of very great honor for the saint.
His good name spread still further, and many began to come to him for guidance in monastic life. Around 1060, the blessed Barlaam, son of Prince John’s boyar, and the God-loving Ephrem, a eunuch in the prince’s service, came to Saint Anthony, longing to dedicate themselves to Christ. Anthony instructed the priest Nikon to tonsure them as monks. But God permitted Saint Anthony and the brothers to be severely tested because of these two tonsures. Boyar John came to the caves in a rage with many of his servants and violently scattered Anthony’s flock, which God had gathered. He dragged his son Barlaam out of the cave by force and furiously tore off his monastic clothing...
...dressed him in splendid boyar robes, and took him by force to his palace. Prince Iziaslav was also enraged with Saint Anthony when he learned that the son of his boyar and his eunuch Ephrem had been tonsured as monks. He ordered the arrest of the blessed Nikon, who had performed the tonsures, and threatened to throw all the brothers into a dungeon and demolish their cave. Seeing the prince’s anger, Saint Anthony decided to leave the cave. He went elsewhere, while the brothers scattered to different places. But when Iziaslav’s wife learned that Anthony had fled, she was deeply grieved and begged her husband not to persecute the servants of God...
...lest God’s wrath fall upon him. That wise woman reminded Iziaslav of the calamity that had recently struck her homeland, Poland. Her father, King Boleslav, had driven the monks from his realm because of Saint Moses the Hungarian. After the monks were expelled, Boleslav met a bitter and sudden death, while great unrest broke out among the people and much blood was shed. She urged Iziaslav to put aside his anger and act wisely, so that the same thing would not happen to him. Hearing her words, the prince feared divine punishment. He sent men to Saint Anthony...
...and invited him to return without fear to the place of his ascetic life, together with all the brothers. The messengers searched for Anthony for three days. When they found him, they fell at his feet and begged him to return to his hermitage. The saint obeyed and went back to the cave. There, in stillness, he prayed without ceasing that God would gather the scattered sheep of His holy flock again and give them strength to endure bravely the temptations of the enemy who hates all that is good. God, in His love for mankind, heard His servant’s prayer and gathered around Anthony once more all the brothers who had scattered during the prince’s persecution.
Others too, thirsting deeply for salvation, began to flock to the cave. They begged Anthony to illumine them, free them from the bonds of sin, and guide them on the path to the Kingdom of Heaven. He received them all with love and taught them the monastic life. After the customary period of testing, he gave them the monastic habit. The number of brothers thus grew to twelve. They had to dig farther into the cave and enlarge it, then build a small chapel and cells inside it, which survive to this day. One day Anthony called all the brothers to him and said, “My brothers and children, you know that the Lord brought us all here and established us as the first blessing for our country and its people.
“You are a blessing from the Holy Mountain of Athos and from our Lady the Theotokos, our shared protector and comforter. Just as my elder on Athos made me a monk, so I, with his blessing and that of the Holy Mountain, have made you monks and leave you here as an inheritance from Athos. Live, then, in a way worthy of your calling and of the blessing that shelters you. My children,” he added, “I think it is time for me to step down as abbot. I long to live as I did before, alone in hesychia, in inner stillness with God. I will appoint another abbot for you and withdraw. Of course, we will not be parted. I will remain here and stand beside you for as long as I live...
“...as your spiritual father.” Anthony did indeed appoint the blessed Barlaam as abbot, for he was experienced and very virtuous. Anthony himself shut himself in one of the cave’s small cells, avoiding all commotion and honor. Soon, though, he moved to another hill, where he dug a new cave, the one now beneath the Great Monastery of the Caves. There he continued his ascetic life, glorifying God with ceaseless prayers and spiritual struggles, cultivating every virtue and growing ever stronger. And God honored him in return, richly adorning him with gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially the gifts of healing and foresight.
Anthony became a wonderworking healer and a great prophet of the Russian land. He healed crowds of sick people through his prayer and with a poisonous herb that he blessed before giving it to them to taste. Before his prayer and blessing, that herb brought death through its poison. After his blessing, it brought life and release from every illness. As for his gift of foresight, one need only recall how he foretold the Russian army’s painful defeat and the devastation of the Russian land by the Polovtsians, which God permitted in those days because of the Christians’ sins.
The all-good Lord permitted Saint Anthony, too, to face a great trial, so that his patient endurance and steadfastness might shine still more brightly. Influenced by slander against the saint, Iziaslav was seized by terrible anger toward him. At that time, Anthony was caring in his cave for Isaac the Recluse, who was bedridden after the devil had deceived him and left him half dead. It seems that the enemy of all good was furious at Anthony’s efforts to save Isaac. He set out to hinder this work pleasing to God by every means, and for a short time he succeeded. Before Iziaslav could harm Anthony, his brother Sviatoslav, the prince of Chernihiv, heard of his anger...
Sviatoslav sent his men by night to bring the servant of God into his territory. Saint Anthony chose a quiet place near the city, on Boldin Hill. He dug a cave and settled there, and a monastery was later built on that spot. But the enemy of all good did not rejoice for long. Iziaslav learned the truth from many trustworthy people. His anger subsided, and he came to see the saint’s innocence and virtue. He understood that the accusations were slander stirred up by the evil one. Grieved and repentant, the prince sent representatives to Chernihiv, asking Anthony to return to Kyiv and to the flock God had gathered around him.
Gentle and humble of heart, Anthony accepted Iziaslav’s request and returned to his brotherhood, which had so long been without its spiritual father. After his return to Kyiv, the saint took up even greater ascetic struggles. His whole life in the cave was an unceasing, fierce battle against the schemes of the devil and the rulers of the darkness of this age. Before departing for the heavenly dwellings, he helped bring about the building of the church of the Caves Monastery through his prayers and miracles. Having blessed the site and the beginning of the work, Saint Anthony began to prepare for his passage to the eternal city not made by human hands.
As he sensed that the time of his departure was near, he gathered the brothers around him and instructed them. He comforted them with the promise that, even after leaving his mortal body, he would never abandon the place of his spiritual struggles. “I will always be among you, my children. I will watch over your struggles and your progress in monastic life. I will care for the souls who come to this holy place seeking to please God. I give you this promise as my only inheritance to you, and my most precious one. From heaven I will intercede with the Lord, so that you may all find mercy on the fearful day of judgment.” And so, after sixteen years in the second cave and ninety years of life,
the saint left this passing world for eternity on July 10, 1073, during the reign of Prince Sviatoslav Yaroslavich and the Byzantine emperor Michael VII Doukas. The honored body of the saint, the first abbot of the Caves Monastery, was laid in his cave beneath the present great monastery. During his life, he had stayed out of human sight and prayed in secret. Now he asked the Lord to keep his body hidden from people as well. The Lord granted his wish and has kept the venerable relics of His servant hidden to this day.
Those who, from time to time, tried to dig into the cave and uncover the relics were punished for daring to oppose God’s will and the saint’s wish. Fire burst from the earth and burned their limbs. They suffered for a long time, until they repented of what they had done and received forgiveness and healing through the wonderworking saint.
Though hidden from human eyes, the holy relics of Saint Anthony remain a source of sanctification, help, and strength. From their hidden resting place, they work many miracles for those who come in faith to the holy cave and ask for the saint’s intercession.
The Kyiv Caves Lavra, also called the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra or simply the Pechersk Lavra, stands at the southern edge of Kyiv, on two hills along the right bank of the Dnieper River. In the eleventh century, dense forest covered the area. As mentioned earlier, the first ascetic there was Hilarion the Priest. Yet Saint Anthony, whom we commemorate today, may be regarded as the founder of the lavra. This Athonite monk was the father and founder of Russian monasticism. For almost a thousand years, the Kyiv Caves Lavra was a life-giving vine, nourishing Orthodoxy in the north with fruit that gave life.
It was a place of extraordinary spiritual struggle, a starting point for the ascent toward God, and a nursery of saints. Through their fervent prayers, ascetic struggles, miracles, and holiness, these men strengthened and established the message of the Gospel in Russia. The monastery was also a powerful center of resistance to the Union with Rome and to Latin efforts to spread their teaching. In the seventeenth century, the first advanced Church school in Russia was founded here. It grew into the renowned Kyiv Theological Academy. In 1718, a great fire destroyed the printing house, the library, the church, and most of the monastery complex.
From the ashes, the monks recovered the wonderworking icon of the Theotokos (God-bearer). It had suffered only slight damage. That same day, Archimandrite Ioannikios went to tell Peter the Great what had happened. “Was the icon of the Theotokos saved?” the tsar asked at once. “It was saved,” replied the archimandrite. “If the icon was saved, then the monastery was saved too,” the ruler said with joy. With imperial help, rebuilding began that very day. Yet this radiant beacon of spiritual life and Orthodox tradition was extinguished after the October Revolution of 1917, for reasons known to the Lord alone.
The lavra and its church were plundered by the German occupiers, who took away unique works of Church architecture. In recent years, by the grace of the all-good God, the divine light of monastic life has begun to shine again in this holy place, where for many decades there had been no feast, no incense, and no offering.
