Today, July 25, we celebrate the falling asleep of Saint Anne, mother of our Most Holy Lady, the Theotokos. We also commemorate the 165 holy Fathers who gathered at the Fifth Ecumenical Council in Constantinople and condemned the teachings of Origen; Saint Olympias the Deaconess; Saint Eupraxia; the holy martyrs Sanctus, Maturus, Attalus, and Blandina; and Saint Macarius of Zheltovodsk, the Russian wonderworker.
Saint Anne, the mother of the Most Holy Theotokos, came from the tribe of Levi. Her father was named Matthan and was a priest; her mother was Mary. Anne had two sisters, Mary, who bore the same name as their mother, and Sobe. Mary had a daughter, Salome the midwife, and Sobe had Elizabeth. Saint Anne was granted the great honor and joy of having a daughter unlike any other: the Virgin Mary, mother of the Savior of the world. After giving birth to the Theotokos and weaning her, Saint Anne dedicated her to the Temple of God as a pure and spotless gift. She spent her life in fasting,
prayer, and giving alms to the poor, and so she departed peacefully to the Lord.
During the reign of Theodosius the Great, toward the end of the fourth century after Christ, there lived a senator named Antigonus. He was wealthy and highly capable in public affairs, but he was also full of virtue and devotion to God. His wife, Eupraxia, was worthy of him in every way: exceptionally generous, modest, and kind. They had a daughter whom Antigonus also named Eupraxia, hoping she would follow the example of her devout and good mother. Under her parents’ watchful and loving care, the little girl grew in age, beauty, virtue, and wisdom,
and in the illumination of the Spirit of God. After her birth, her parents lived together as brother and sister, pursuing every kind of virtue, especially giving alms. Before long, Antigonus, having pleased God even more than before, departed this passing life for the eternal dwellings. Eupraxia was still young and beautiful, and her wealth, noble family, and virtues attracted distinguished suitors. One of them even had the favor of the empress, who kept urging Eupraxia to marry him. But this modest, devout,
and prudent widow was among those Christian women whose departed husbands remain present in their memory and love. Her tender mother’s heart also longed to devote itself wholly to her daughter. She knew well that a second marriage and more children could often put children from the first marriage at risk. So, seeking peace and safety from further pressure at court, she left the imperial capital and went to Egypt, where she owned a substantial estate. Once settled there, she devoted herself eagerly to works pleasing to God, giving generously from her wealth to churches, monasteries,
and the many poor and sick. Meanwhile, her daughter had grown into a young woman who matched her mother in gifts of body and soul. On Sundays and great feast days, mother and daughter loved to visit women’s monasteries where the spiritual life of ascetic discipline flourished. Their time with the nuns deeply influenced them both. Worldly cares, the passions, and vanities gave them no pleasure; they troubled and frightened them. Both were filled with peace, and they found great joy among the good nuns, away from the turmoil of earthly life,
closer to the blessings of heaven. As her daughter grew older, Eupraxia began to think about her future. The girl had been betrothed in the imperial capital when she was very young, but now she longed for a different life. Her mother’s health had declined, and her days seemed numbered. The younger Eupraxia wanted to embrace monastic life and join the sisters of one of these monasteries, where ascetic discipline was strict. Her mother did not resist. In fact, she brought her daughter before an icon of Christ, dedicated her to Him, and then entrusted her to the abbess. Soon afterward, she died in her daughter’s arms, blessing her
and praying that she would live a holy life, always keeping the Lord’s commandments. When the emperor learned of the elder Eupraxia’s death, he sent an imperial envoy to her daughter. He offered her his protection and called her to Constantinople for her wedding. She promptly wrote back to tell him that she had already become a nun, and asked him to see that her parents’ properties in the capital were used for charitable purposes. Her request was fulfilled. Eupraxia gave herself wholeheartedly to ascetic discipline, fasting, vigils, and prayer, keeping her spiritual mind always on the things of heaven.
Day by day, she intensified her ascetic discipline and grew toward perfection. Despite her very strict fasting, she eagerly served the sisters, carrying water and working in the bakery or kitchen. Though she labored all day, she never neglected her usual rule of prayer. She was the first to arrive at the church for the service and the last to leave. She was gentle, patient, and kind to every sister, an inspiring example of monastic life and Christian conduct. The other nuns marveled at her and prayed that God would give her patient endurance and strength. But the devil, seeing how hard she struggled and how far she had advanced, attacked her fiercely
with temptations of the flesh. She met them with bodily hardship, stricter fasting, confession of her logismoi, her intrusive thoughts, and prayer. Once, for this reason, she remained outdoors for forty days, standing the whole time without food. The enemy of those who struggle for God even plotted against her life. Once, while she was drawing water from a well, he tangled her feet and threw her in. The other nuns heard her cries and pulled her out. Turning to the demon, she said, “Until now I carried water with one jar. From today on, I’ll carry two.” Another time, as she was chopping wood, the demon caused the axe to wound her heel,
and she fainted from the loss of blood. Later, a piece of wood pierced her face and nearly blinded her. Yet she continued serving the sisters and attending their gatherings. Her great zeal for God made her barely feel the pain of her wounds. At another time, with God’s permission, the devil threw her from an upper room above the third floor to the ground. On another occasion, he caused boiling water to fall on her face, but she was unharmed. Just as the evil one never stopped attacking her, God never stopped sending her help. The sisters became convinced that God’s grace rested upon Eupraxia, and they called her His faithful servant.
Her virtuous life pleased God so much that she was granted the grace to work miracles. She healed a child who had been paralyzed from birth and could neither hear nor speak, and she healed a woman who had been afflicted by a demon for many years. But Christ, her Bridegroom, who loves pure souls, chose not to leave His bride on earth much longer, for she was worthy to dwell in heaven. The abbess was shown Eupraxia’s departure in a vision. At the age of thirty, early in years but mature in the abundant fruit of her spiritual life, Eupraxia departed to Christ, for whose faith and love
she had spent her wealth, her youth, and her life. Her tomb became an inexhaustible source of miracles, through which the holy Triune God, the giver of every good thing, is glorified.
Let us return to Saint Anne, whose falling asleep the Church celebrates today. She was the grandmother of our Lord according to the flesh. What a great honor and blessing! Yet, as one Church preacher points out: “God did not glorify the forebears because they were His relatives. No; because their deeds pleased Him, they were chosen from all the world to be His relatives.” Their holy deeds led to their being chosen; being chosen did not make them holy. And when the Lord was once told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside and want to see You,”
He answered, “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” That is, “My mother and brothers are these people here who hear God’s Word and put it into practice.” Family ties of flesh belong to this present life; they cannot give eternal, divine life. Spiritual kinship and communion with Christ overcome death and bring a person into eternal life and salvation. Kinship of flesh comes from shared blood. Spiritual kinship comes from sharing one Spirit: the Holy Spirit, whom those who believe in Christ receive when they are baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity. It is by the Holy Spirit
that the cry “Abba, Father” rises within us, and we become children of God, and brothers and fellow heirs with Christ. The Holy Spirit is love and brings forth in us love for the heavenly Father, for His only begotten Son, for every person, and for all creation. Through Holy Baptism we are grafted into Christ and become one body with Him. He is the head, and we are the members. He is the vine, and we are the branches. By receiving Holy Communion, His spotless Body and precious Blood, we become one body and blood with Christ. “Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him,” the Lord assures us.
Yet taking part in the Mysteries is not enough. We must also live according to them, by keeping Christ’s commandments. “My mother and My brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” And as we become Christ’s brothers and sisters, we also feel the tender bond of grandchildren with their grandmother, Saint Anne, whom we celebrate today.
