Today, October 4, our Church commemorates Saint Hierotheos, the first bishop of Athens; Saint Peter of Capitolias, the priest and martyr; Saint Domnina the Martyr and her daughters, Verina and Prosdoke; Saint Abdaktos the Martyr and his daughter Kallisthene; Saint Ammon of Egypt; Saints Faustus, Gaius, Eusebius, and Chaeremon, the deacons and martyrs; Saint John Lampadistes; and the finding of the relics of Saints Gury and Barsanuphius of Russia.
Our father Ammon was Egyptian by birth. When his parents died, his uncle compelled him to wed at the age of twenty-two. After the wedding, when all the guests had left and he and his wife were alone, he said to her, “Come, my dear sister, and let me tell you what is in my heart. If you wish it too, as I do, let the union we have entered be spiritual rather than bodily. Let us sleep in separate beds for love of Christ our Savior, and preserve our chastity, so that we may rejoice forever in Paradise.” With these words, Ammon took a small book from his robe and began to read it.
The book contained passages from Holy Scripture, from the Savior and the Apostles, about chastity and purity. Ammon explained the passages as the Holy Spirit enlightened him. That blessed young woman was sound in heart, good, and blessed; the seed of the Gospel and the Apostles fell on the good soil of her soul. She told her bridegroom that she gladly accepted what he had said, but asked that they stay together in one home and live as brother and sister, or rather as fellow ascetics. The wonderful Ammon agreed, and they lived together as brother and sister for eighteen years. Each day Ammon worked in the garden.
In particular, he cultivated the medicinal plant called balsam, which is planted like a vine and takes great labor to dig around and prune. In the evening he came home, read Vespers with his wife, and shared a meal with her. Then they separated. He rose very early in the night, read Matins (Orthros), and went back to work in the garden. Living this way, with God’s help, they attained perfect apatheia, freedom from the passions. One day that thrice-blessed woman said to Ammon, “My dear, I have something to tell you. If you listen, I will know that you love me as a true brother.” The saint said, “Tell me what you wish.” So she said:
“I do not think it right that a man so holy, so proven in every virtue, who can benefit many people by his words and deeds, as you have helped even humble me in chastity and self-restraint, should live hidden away in a house. No one knows of your virtuous life or the grace of the All-Holy Spirit that rests upon you.” When blessed Ammon heard this, he glorified God, who had enlightened her to say these things. He thanked her and said, “You have spoken well, my sister. This house is yours, and I will go and find another place to live.” At once he departed for a remote part of the mountain of Nitria, where there were as yet no monasteries.
There he built two cells and lived another twenty-two years. Through the strictest ascetic discipline and great struggles, he attained every virtue and ended his earthly life as a monk. He lived sixty-two years in all. Twice each year he saw his blessed wife, and they spoke together of things that benefited the soul. Once, a child who had been bitten by a rabid dog was brought to the saint. The child had become rabid too and had to be kept in chains. His parents begged Ammon to pray to the Lord for him, but the saint humbly replied, “Why do you press me to do what I cannot do?
The means of healing your child are in your own hands. Give the widow an ox to replace the one you secretly killed, and your son will be healed.” Amazed by the saint’s gift of spiritual discernment, they received his blessing. As soon as they gave the widow the ox, their son was healed. On another occasion, some people came to visit the saint. To test their disposition, he asked them to bring him a large jar for storing water.
These men carried goods for a living. One had a camel and the other a donkey. The man with the camel would not carry the jar, because he did not want to burden his camel. The other loaded it onto his donkey and brought it to the saint, who told him, “Your companion would not burden his camel, and the camel has died.” On hearing this, the man ran to look and found the camel dead, with dogs eating it. For a long time, thieves kept coming to our saint’s cell and stealing his hard bread and whatever other food he had. They ate his provisions, while he risked dying for lack of necessities, since this went on for so long. Seeing no other way through this hardship, he went deeper into the desert, found two large serpents, and commanded them to follow him to his cell. When they arrived, he told them to stand at the door
and stay there until he gave them leave to go. When the thieves came again to steal something, they saw the serpents and fell to the ground, almost dead with fear. The saint came out of his cell and said to them, “Do you see how much more savage and inhuman you are than these creatures? They respect the servants of God and obey them, but you harm them.” Then he brought the thieves into his cell and offered them food with great kindness and good cheer. Seeing such goodness, they were moved to tears and asked forgiveness for their former sins. They repented with all their hearts and became monks. After their repentance,
their wonderful change was so pleasing to God that they even worked miracles, putting the demon, who hates all that is good, to shame. A monk once asked Saint Ammon, “My spiritual father sends me on an errand, and I am afraid I may fall into sexual sin.” Ammon told him, “Whenever temptation comes, say, ‘God of hosts, through the prayers of my father, deliver me.’” The power of this advice was shown in what happened next. When that brother went on an errand for his elder, a woman saw him enter her house and shut the door.
The brother cried out loudly, “God of my father, deliver me!” And at once he found himself on the road to the skete. Athanasius the Great also related this miracle about Saint Ammon. On another occasion, Anthony the Great sent some monks to Abba Ammon to ask him to come and see him. As soon as they delivered the message, Ammon set out with them. When they came to the river called Lycus, he was ashamed to undress, for no one had ever seen him naked. While he was thinking about this, he found himself on the other side of the river, while the brothers crossed by swimming. When they reached Anthony the Great, the two greeted each other. Then Anthony said to Ammon:
“The Lord has revealed wonderful things about you to me, brother. He has also revealed your death to me. That is why I invited you here: so that we might enjoy each other’s company in the Holy Spirit and pray to God for one another. Stay nearby, brother, in a place apart, until your earthly life comes to an end.” So Saint Ammon stayed there, as Anthony had said, and a few days later his life came to an end. Anthony the Great then saw Saint Ammon’s soul being carried to heaven by divine angels singing hymns. He told his disciples, who went and found that Ammon had indeed died, just as Anthony had said.
Sometimes we think we are not doing well or growing spiritually because our surroundings and the circumstances of our lives are not good, not what we think they ought to be. We often hear someone say, “I want to become holy, but other people will not let me.” In other words, we locate the problem outside ourselves. So we are always grumbling and complaining about others. We blame a neighbor, society, or those in power, and almost never ourselves.
But through his life, Abba Ammon tells us today that what we lack is willingness and zeal. Anyone who truly wants to struggle and grow spiritually can do so in any circumstances. This does not mean that everything around us is good, or that we should not try to make things better when we can. It means that the real problem lies within us. If we struggle as we ought, outward obstacles can do more than fail to stop our spiritual growth: they can even help it. Let us also remember that God knows everything and holds everything in His hands. If something truly needs to change, He will change it, as He did in Saint Ammon’s life. If we prove faithful in the few things
and through the difficulties, the abundance and peace of heaven await us. “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things; I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

Εκεί έκτισε δύο κελιά, στα οποία έζησε άλλα είκοσι δύο χρόνια. Με άσκηση δε ακρότατη και αγώνες μεγάλους και αφού κατόρθωσε κάθε αρετή, τελείωσε την πρόσκαιρη αυτή ζωή στη μοναχική πολιτεία. Όλα τα χρόνια της ζωής του έγιναν εξήντα δύο. Δύο φορές κάθε χρόνο έβλεπε τη μακάρια σύζυγό του και συνομιλούσαν λόγους ψυχωφελείς. Κάποτε έφεραν στον Όσιο ένα παιδί το οποίο δάγκωσε λυσσασμένος σκύλος. Λύσσαξε και το παιδί και το είχαν δεμένο με αλυσίδα. Και οι μεν γονείς παρακαλούσαν τον Όσιο να κάνει δέηση προς τον Κύριο για το παιδί τους, ο δε Όσιος ταπεινά τους έλεγε: «Άνθρωποι, τι με πιέζετε να κάνω εκείνα που δεν μπορώ;
