Today, October 22, our Church commemorates Saint Abercius, Equal to the Apostles, Bishop of Hierapolis and Wonderworker; the Holy Martyrs Alexander the Bishop, Heraclius, Anna, Elizabeth, Theodota, and Glyceria; the Holy Martyr Zacharias; and the Venerable Rufus and Lot.

Abercius lived in the second century after Christ. He embraced the faith of Christ and lived a blameless life. His teaching was known for its power and fruitfulness. After many appeals from the faithful, he became bishop of Hierapolis in Phrygia, in Asia Minor. His office did nothing to lessen his zeal. It is said that a leader must do more than appear to stand above others: he must truly rise to the responsibility, become a better person, and increase his labors in service. According to the Gospel, a leader does not rule over others but serves them. When Abercius took up his ministry as bishop, he brought other preachers to work alongside him and raised up new ones, so that

the teaching and faith in the living and true God might spread further. Leading his fellow workers in the Gospel, this zealous bishop worked with great success for the souls of his flock. Through his words and miracles, he brought many pagans into the body of Christ. Saint Abercius became known in other provinces too, and people came in groups to hear his teaching and receive his blessing. Through his loving care as bishop, many poor people, widows, and abandoned orphans found their daily food and the other things they needed to live. Reverence for Abercius

grew when he healed Phrygella, the mother of Poplion, the city's chief official. She was blind. When she heard accounts of Bishop Abercius, she wanted to hear him teach. One day, she was led to the square, where he was teaching a large crowd from a raised platform. Her soul was illumined, and her heart opened to receive the heavenly refreshment of the truth. She asked to be taken to the bishop. Seeing her approach, he told those around him to make way. Phrygella said to him, “I thank you for the light your words have shed upon my blind soul. I want to become a Christian.” The bishop was deeply moved.

He laid his hands on her and prayed, calling upon the Lord: “In the name of Jesus Christ, who has mercy on those who have gone astray and gives sight to the blind, may your bodily eyes see, just as the eyes of your soul have been opened.” At once she was healed and regained her sight. The people were astonished and deeply moved. Phrygella joyfully glorified God and thanked His servant, through whom the miracle had taken place. The Christians present glorified the true God. Some of the pagans came to believe, while others began to reflect and prepare to embrace fully a faith whose preachers showed such love for humanity and such power.

Saint Abercius extended his good work as far as Rome. He went there by the will of God, longing to venerate the place where the foremost Apostles, Peter and Paul, had shed their blood as martyrs. Through his preaching and holiness, more people there received the Gospel. Still more came to faith when his prayers freed Lucilla, the sixteen-year-old daughter of the emperor of that time, from an unclean demon. He then traveled through Syria, first to Antioch, then to Apamea and other cities, teaching the Orthodox faith and opposing the heresy of Marcion. From there he crossed the Euphrates and went to Nisibis and other parts of Mesopotamia.

He had heard that this heresy was present there as well, and through the power of his words and his life pleasing to God, he restored peace to the Churches wherever he went. He then returned to Asia Minor, traveling through Cilicia, Lycaonia, Pisidia, and Synnada in Phrygia, before finally reaching Hierapolis, the seat of his bishopric. His flock, who had missed him, welcomed him with great joy. Although Abercius had endured the strain of constant preaching and very long journeys, he sought no rest. With his usual zeal, he resumed his pastoral work: preaching the word of truth, baptizing catechumens, freeing those afflicted by demons, and healing every kind of illness.

Once, when he climbed a high mountain with many others, they grew thirsty. He knelt and prayed, and wonderfully sweet water sprang forth. They all drank and were refreshed, and they called that place the Place of Kneeling. As the time drew near for the Saint to depart this world, he saw the Lord in a vision. The Lord said to him, “The time has come, Abercius, for you to rest from your many labors.” He awoke, told his brethren about the vision, and said that he would soon go to the Lord. He counseled the priests, deacons, and most respected laypeople of his flock to live in harmony and peace, caring for the good of the Church and the salvation of their souls.

He also urged them to choose his successor. Grieving at the thought of losing their teacher and shepherd, they elected the Church’s chief priest as their next bishop. The Saint blessed and ordained him. Then, after praying and calling upon God’s mercy, Abercius entrusted his blessed soul into the hands of the Lord.

“Godlike in your life, you received the gift bestowed upon the Apostles; through wondrous deeds, Abercius, you confirmed the glory of the truth for those who welcomed you.” With these words, the hymn of praise to Saint Abercius gives us a brief picture of his life and work.

It was a great work, equal to that of an Apostle. It rested on his Godlike way of life and his holiness, as well as on a special gift like the one the Apostles received. That gift included the power to work miracles, which confirmed the truth of what he preached. We may lack this particular gift for missionary work.

Perhaps Christ and His Church do not call us to be teachers and missionaries.

But the first task belongs to all of us: through metanoia, through repentance, to come to live a Godlike life and, always by the grace of God, to grow in holiness. This should be our deepest concern: that the work of bringing the faith takes place within us, moves forward, and bears fruit.

Whether we remain silent or speak humbly, we will truly and fruitfully proclaim Christ. Without even setting out to do so, we will become missionaries. Otherwise, if we are blind but think we can see, and try to teach others, the words of Christ will apply to us: “If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.” That is why Saint Gregory the Theologian advises us: “We must first be cleansed, and then cleanse others; become wise, and then make others wise; become light, and then give light; draw near to God, and then bring others near; become holy, and then make others holy.” But who can say they have reached such a high state? And what should we do when something needs to be said? When it is necessary, let us speak, but with an awareness of our unworthiness. As Abba Isaac says, let us speak as learners, without claiming authority, judging ourselves and, if possible, with tears, in the hope that God will have mercy on us and on others.
