Today, September 5, our Church commemorates the Holy Prophet Zechariah, father of the Honorable Forerunner; Saint Audaeus, bishop and martyr; and the holy martyrs Medemnos, Urbanus, Theodore, and their fellow sufferers, eighty priests and deacons.
The Prophet Zechariah, whom we celebrate today, lived when Herod, called the Great, ruled Judea. He was a priest of the division of Abijah, though some say he was a high priest. His wife, Elizabeth, was a descendant of Aaron. Both were faithful to God and lived according to the law and the commandments of the Lord. They had no child because Elizabeth was barren. The years passed, and when Zechariah’s division came to serve and he was carrying out his priestly duties before God,
he was chosen by lot, as was customary in assigning priestly duties, to enter the Temple of the Lord and offer incense. It would have been September. While he offered incense, the whole crowd was praying outside. Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him. As the angel himself said, he was the Archangel Gabriel. Zechariah was troubled at the sight of him and overcome with fear. But the angel reassured him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John. You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth.”
“He will be great before the Lord. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb, and he will turn many Israelites back to the Lord their God. He will go before the Lord in the spirit and power of the Prophet Elijah, preparing the people to receive Him.” Zechariah was shaken by this announcement, and he doubted it. Along with Elizabeth’s barrenness, they now faced old age. Yet his doubt did not thwart God’s will. The Archangel Gabriel told Zechariah that, as a punishment, he would be unable to speak until the angel’s words came to pass. Meanwhile, the people waiting for Zechariah
wondered why he was taking so long inside the Temple. When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they understood that he had seen a vision there. He made signs to them but remained speechless. When his days of service in the Temple were over, he returned to his home in the hill country, and Elizabeth conceived. She welcomed the Virgin Mary, her first cousin, into her home, and Mary stayed with her during the last three months of her pregnancy. Nine months after conceiving, Elizabeth gave birth to a son. Her neighbors and relatives heard the news and welcomed it as a sign of God’s great mercy toward her.
They rejoiced with her. Eight days later, at the child’s circumcision, the relatives wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. But Elizabeth said, “No, he shall be called John.” They replied that no one in her family had that name. They asked Zechariah by signs what he wanted his son to be called; it seems he had also become deaf. The elder asked for a small writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” Everyone was amazed. At once he was able to speak again. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he began praising God, saying:
“Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, for He has come to His people and redeemed them. For our sake He has raised up a mighty Savior from the house of His servant David, just as He spoke centuries ago through His holy prophets. Through Him, He will save us from our enemies and from the power of all who hate us.”
“He has shown mercy to our fathers and fulfilled His holy covenant. He has kept the oath He swore to our father Abraham: to count us worthy, once delivered from the hands of our enemies, to worship Him as people who belong to Him and do what is right before Him all our days. And you, my child,”
“will be called a prophet of the Most High God. You will go before the Lord to prepare His way, making known to His people salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because our God is full of mercy.”
“He has caused a light from on high to dawn upon us, to shine on those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace.” According to the tradition recounted here, the holy Prophet Zechariah was killed by the Jews at Herod’s command, between the altar and the sanctuary, for these reasons. First, he proclaimed that the Lady Theotokos (God-bearer) was both Mother and Virgin. Second, as a consequence of this,
he instructed the Theotokos, after the birth of Christ, to remain in the place assigned to the virgins. Third, during the killing of the infants, Herod’s men sought his son John but could not find him, because he and his mother were hiding in a cave beyond the Jordan River. The holy relic of this prophet was found in 409 AD, during the reign of Emperor Theodosius the Younger, in the village of Kophar near Eleutheropolis in Palestine. He wore a white garment, a golden mitre on his head, and golden sandals on his feet, just as when he had been serving God at the altar. Now, it is said,
the relic is in Italy. Its discovery is celebrated on February 11.
The doubt that the Prophet Zechariah once felt reminds us that the Saints were people like us. They did not all begin life as Saints; not all were sanctified from their mothers’ wombs. Some showed lesser or greater weaknesses, and others had been great sinners. But they did not remain as they were. Through metanoia, through repentance, they moved forward. They walked the longest road a human being can walk: from Hades to Paradise, or from the devil to God. In the end, through faith and repentance,
they came to Christ. Held in the embrace of the risen God-Man, Christ, who had ascended to heaven, the Saints rose with Him and ascended with Him. But first they had been crucified with Him and had become like Him in His death. They also became like Him in the life they lived, following the path that led through His Resurrection and the Ascension. In this way, they lived out Christ’s life in themselves: the life of the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil. By God’s grace and through their own struggle, they were united to Christ and made Christlike. Thus they fulfilled what God had set
as the purpose of human existence. They became gods by grace, God-men by grace, and Christs by grace. In this sense, every Saint lives out Christ’s life anew. This is the calling of every Christian too, according to the measure of each one’s faith. The whole life of the Church, and all its daily services, continually invite us to do this: to live out Christ’s life together with the Saint we commemorate that day, living in prayer and grace, and taking part in the life and works of the Saints as they took part in the life and works of Christ.
“Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ.” This is what the holy Apostle commands me, you, and every one of us, for we have all been called to holiness, to a holy way of living, to a holy life.
