Nicephorus lived in the time of the iconoclast emperor Constantine Copronymus, who reigned in the eighth century. He was born and raised in Constantinople, the queen of cities. His parents, Theodore and Eudocia, were noble and well known. His father was a registrar and notary of imperial decrees. Accused of venerating the holy icons, Theodore was beaten and whipped, then exiled first to a fortress. Because he remained steadfast in the Orthodox faith, he was later exiled to Nicaea. There the blessed man endured six years of hardship before his earthly life came to an end. From childhood, his son Nicephorus was raised in the Orthodox faith.
When Nicephorus grew up, he received a good education and became an imperial secretary. While still a layman, he founded a monastery on the Asian shore of the Bosporus and withdrew there for a time. Under Constantine VI, he became director of the Great Hospital of Constantinople. After Patriarch Tarasius died, Nicephorus was elected Patriarch of Constantinople in April 806, though he was still a layman. But under Leo V the Armenian, a fierce opponent of the holy icons, he was forced to resign in March 815. Nicephorus had resisted the emperor’s order against the icons.
Leo then called a Synod of bishops loyal to him. At the emperor’s command, it pronounced an anathema against the Patriarch and his predecessors, Tarasius and Germanus. It also forbade anyone, under pain of excommunication, to call Nicephorus bishop or Patriarch. Nicephorus protested this seizure of authority. Yet he did not want bloodshed, so he withdrew. After bidding farewell to his flock, he crossed the Bosporus by night and went into exile. He bore that exile bravely for fourteen years. He would not even accept the compromise proposed by Leo’s successor, Emperor Michael II, because it conflicted with the decisions of the holy Seventh Ecumenical Council
on the veneration of holy icons. Nicephorus departed to the Lord on June 2, 829, at the age of seventy. Fourteen years later, the most holy Patriarch Methodius was raised to the patriarchal throne of Constantinople. Among his other virtues and achievements, four years after taking the throne he secured the return of the holy relics of the most holy Nicephorus. He had said to the rulers of that time, Michael III and his mother Theodora: “It is not right that the precious and holy relics of the ever-memorable and most devout Patriarch Nicephorus should not be brought to Constantinople,
for he was driven from the patriarchal throne because of his Orthodox and blameless faith, and he ended his life in exile.” Persuaded by these words, the rulers immediately sent people to bring the Saint’s precious relics from the Monastery of Saint Theodore, where they had been laid to rest. Saint Methodius went with them, accompanied by priests and monks. They found the Saint’s precious relics whole and entirely incorrupt, preserved this way for fourteen years after his repose. They placed them on an imperial ship and brought them to Constantinople. As the ship passed the crossing by the Acropolis, the emperor and the whole senate
came out carrying lamps to meet the holy relics, and they venerated them. Then they carried the relics on their shoulders and placed them in the Great Church. After keeping vigil there, they lifted them onto their shoulders again in the morning and carried them to the Church of the Holy Apostles. This took place on March 13, the very day on which Nicephorus had gone into exile.
Today our Church commemorates the return of the precious relics of Saint Patriarch Nicephorus. This feast gives us another opportunity to reflect on God’s love. He helps us in so many ways, and one of them is through holy relics. They are a God-given treasure. Whoever approaches them with faith and love may receive help in mind, soul, and body. On the occasion of the return of the relics of Saint Ignatius the God-bearer, Saint John Chrysostom taught and urged the people of Antioch with words that he could still
say to us today: “God has left us the relics of the saints,” the golden-mouthed Saint tells us, “to guide us toward the same zeal they had, and to give us a harbor and sure comfort in every misfortune that comes upon us. So I urge you all: if anyone is troubled by illness, by some other hardship, or by the depth of his sins, let him come to the holy relics with faith. He will find relief from all these burdens. He will leave with great gladness, and even contemplating the relics will ease his conscience. Indeed...
let those who suffer come, but let those who are cheerful, honored, powerful, or have great boldness before God come as well. They too should not overlook the benefit. When someone comes and sees this Saint, the memory of his deeds will keep that person from giving way to pride. It is no small thing for those whose lives are going well to avoid becoming puffed up, and to know how to live with humility. The treasure of holy relics is therefore useful to everyone, a refuge open to all: to those who have fallen, that they may be freed from temptations, and to those who prosper,
that the good things they have may remain secure; to the sick, that they may recover their health, and to the healthy, that they may not fall ill. Keeping all this in mind, let us choose to come to the holy relics above every pleasure and delight. Then we may find joy and benefit, and in the life to come dwell and share a home with these saints, through their prayers and through the grace and loving kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ. To Him, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, belong glory now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.”
