Today, August 30, our Church commemorates Saints Alexander, John, and Paul the Younger, Patriarchs of Constantinople; Saint Fantinos, the venerable wonderworker; the six holy martyrs of Melitene; Saint Sarmatas; Saint Brienne; the sixteen holy martyrs of Thebes; Saint Eulalios the Hierarch; and the holy martyrs Felix, Fortunian, Septiminus, and Januarius.

The Church historian Socrates says that Alexander, the Archbishop of Constantinople whom we celebrate today, shone with apostolic gifts. Even as a priest, he was widely known for his devotion to God, his virtue, and his goodness. When Patriarch Metrophanes was unable to attend the First Ecumenical Council at Nicaea, he chose Alexander to represent him. After that Council condemned Arius, Alexander, though already seventy years old, agreed to travel through Thrace, Macedonia, Thessaly, Greece itself, and the islands, proclaiming the Orthodox faith.

He made known the decision and the Creed of the Council of Nicaea. He was still on that journey when Patriarch Metrophanes died. Before his death, Metrophanes had named Alexander as his successor, convinced that, despite his age, he had the spiritual gifts needed to guide the archdiocese of the capital through those harsh and troubled times. The dying hierarch’s last wish was respected. Some of the fathers who had attended the First Ecumenical Council were in the capital, and they consecrated Alexander as Metrophanes’ successor.

History tells us that Arius had been condemned, yet Arianism still had many followers and protectors, even in the imperial palace and among the bishops. Athanasius the Great saw the grave danger this posed to the faith and the Church. He took the lead among the Orthodox in continuing the struggle against Arius, a proud and cunning leader of heresy who readily bent his conscience. But at the urging of Eusebius, bishop of Caesarea, this defender of Orthodoxy was condemned and deposed at the Synod of Tyre. The Synod also voted to readmit Arius to the Church, on the pretext that the statement of faith he had submitted was

in agreement with the Creed of Nicaea. Athanasius was exiled to Augusta Treverorum, and Arius returned to Alexandria. But the people there would not tolerate the presence of the leader of heresy. Eusebius of Caesarea and his supporters then sought a public event in Arius’s favor that would place him under the emperor’s direct protection. They deceived Constantine the Great into having Arius come to Constantinople and be received into Holy Communion there. Archbishop Alexander resisted, gently but firmly, assuring the emperor that Arius’s new statement of faith was deceptive.

In truth, it remained heretical at its core. Constantine was at a loss. He summoned Arius and demanded a clear answer: did he uphold the teaching of the Orthodox Church? Arius said he did and swore that he held no heretical belief and taught no blasphemy. The emperor then told him, “Go, then. If your faith is sound, may the oath you have sworn stand. But if your faith is impious, may God punish you for swearing falsely.” Then he dismissed him. The next day was Sunday, and Constantine insisted that the Archbishop of Constantinople

must give Arius the Holy Gifts. Alexander left the palace in deep sorrow and distress. At the first church he came to, he went inside and, with tears, called upon the Most High for help. Then he went to the Great Church and prayed through the night at the holy altar. He said, “If Arius comes tomorrow, take me, your servant, from this life, and do not let the faithful perish with the impious. If you care for your Church—and I know you do—look upon her. Do not let your inheritance be destroyed and disgraced. Take Arius from this life, so that, if he enters the Church, people will not think that heresy enters with him

or mistake impiety for true faith.” The virtuous hierarch’s prayer was heard. In the morning Arius set out for the Church, surrounded by many friends, talking freely and full of joy, as though in triumph. On the way, however, he was seized by an urgent need and went to the latrine. When he took too long to come out, his worried friends hurried in. What had happened? Arius lay on the ground, his body torn open at the middle. The aged Alexander glorified God for this miracle and for protecting the Orthodox from heresy. He devoted the rest of his life to the defense of Orthodoxy. Saint Alexander

shepherded the Church of Christ in a way pleasing to God for twenty-three years and departed to the Lord in 340. As for the Patriarch John of Constantinople commemorated today, of the many patriarchs named John, he was most likely John Xiphilinos. He came from Trebizond and was born in 1006. A man of great learning, he had held high public office before withdrawing to a monastery in Bithynia. He lived there as a monk for ten years, until he was called to the patriarchal throne. He was ordained a priest

and a week later, on January 1, 1064, was consecrated bishop. John VIII served the Divine Liturgy and preached every day in the churches of the capital. He regularly gathered his clergy to read and interpret Holy Scripture with them and teach them the true doctrines of the faith. He also repaired many churches, restored the holy icons of Hagia Sophia, and cared for the poor, distributing bread and wheat to them freely. He died in 1075. Here is how one of his contemporaries described him: He emerged as a man of complete purity, free from every bodily stain. Moreover, he

showed contempt for money, owned nothing, and was no less generous to the poor than that renowned merciful man. Richly adorned with every other virtue as well, he was an accomplished speaker, thoroughly educated, and remarkable for the breadth of his learning. As for the Patriarch Paul commemorated today, there were likewise several patriarchs by that name. Some believe this was Paul III, who served as patriarch from 687 to 693. While still a layman, he was the emperor’s private secretary and, in that capacity, took part in the Sixth Ecumenical Council. After becoming patriarch, he presided over what the account calls the Fifth Ecumenical Council, held in 691–692 under Justinian II. Others believe the saint commemorated is Patriarch Paul IV. He came from Cyprus and ascended the patriarchal throne in 780. He was educated and deeply devout, and the historian Theophanes describes him as venerable, exceptionally merciful, and worthy of every respect. He resigned toward the end of August 784 and withdrew to the Monastery of Florus, where he lived as a simple monk

for two or three months after his resignation.

One quality stands out in all the holy Fathers of our Church, and especially in Saint Alexander, whom we celebrate today: their God-given zeal for Orthodoxy and for the truth. Our Fathers loved the truth with all their hearts, because God is truth. The Lord said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” Everything God does and says is true. “The works of your hands are true,” and “mercy and truth go before your face.” Truth and falsehood cannot be reconciled.

A lie is a rejection of the truth, an estrangement from God. Truth is essential to knowing the true God and receiving true life. Indeed, truth is true life itself: it is Christ and the salvation of the human person. Everything in a person should be truthful: above all, the doctrine he holds and the faith he professes, but also his words and his whole life. A lie defiles. Whoever lies defiles his heart and his mouth; whoever speaks the truth sanctifies his soul, his body, and all his members. For the truth is Christ. That is why the Word of God counsels us: “Speak the truth

each to your neighbor.” And again: “Acquire truth, and do not cast aside wisdom and instruction.” “The mouth of the truthful will be filled with laughter”—that is, with joy. The Apostle likewise urges us: “Put away falsehood and speak the truth, each to your neighbor.” The writer of Proverbs observes: “Better a poor person who walks in truth than a rich liar.” David, the prophet and king, asks: “Lord, who may dwell in your tabernacle? Who may live on your holy mountain?” And he answers: “The one who walks without blame, does what is right, and speaks the truth in his heart.” The Evangelist John also tells us, and by doing so urges us: “Whoever speaks the truth abides in God.”
