The relics whose discovery we celebrate today were found while the Most Holy Patriarch Thomas occupied the throne of Constantinople. First, the precious relics of several holy martyrs were found hidden beneath the earth. Patriarch Thomas and the people who gathered from everywhere immediately brought them forth with great reverence. Many people were then healed of various illnesses. Years later, God revealed to a clergyman and calligrapher named Nicholas that these sacred relics included those of the Apostles Andronicus and Junia, whom the Apostle Paul mentions.

In his Epistle to the Romans, he writes: “Greet Andronicus and Junia, my relatives and fellow prisoners. They are well known among the apostles, and they were in Christ before me.”

Saint Athanasius, whom we celebrate today, was born in Constantinople to devout and very wealthy parents. Devout from an early age, he longed to become a monk.

He went to the Monastery of Paulopetrion on the Gulf of Nicomedia and became a monk there. He grew so much in virtue, and his reputation spread so widely, that even emperors came to know of him. He also formed close ties with Saint Theodore the Studite and Saint John of the Monastery of Kathara. Together they worked for the restoration of the veneration of the holy icons.

Under Emperor Leo V the Iconoclast, Athanasius was accused of venerating the holy icons. He was tortured in various ways and sent into exile. Yet he remained steadfast in the Orthodox faith to the end and departed joyfully to the Lord.

The holy fathers Thalassius and Limnaeus lived in Syria in the fifth century, during the time of Theodoret, bishop of Cyrrhus, who wrote their lives. Thalassius built a hermitage on the mountain above the village of Tillima, near Cyrrhus. His simplicity and humility surpassed those of the other holy ascetics of his day. Limnaeus, still very young and deeply drawn to the ascetic life, went to Thalassius and learned from him how to live it. He then went to Saint Maron and, following his example, chose to live without a roof over his head or any other shelter.

Limnaeus climbed to the summit of a mountain and lived there as an ascetic. He did not build a hut. He surrounded himself only with a wall of dry stones, with the sky for a roof. Through these struggles, he received from God the grace to drive out demons and heal the sick. Once, as he was walking, a viper bit his leg more than ten times. Though he suffered terrible pain, he chose not to seek medical treatment. He was healed through the sign of the Precious Cross, prayer, and the invocation of the divine Name. This saint gathered blind people who had been forced to beg, built a cell for each of them, and gave them the food they needed.

He obtained that food from Christians who came to him for a blessing. After living without a roof for thirty-eight years, he peacefully gave up his soul into the hands of God.

Saint Baradatus came from Antioch. He loved the solitary life devoted to God. At first he shut himself in a small cell. Then he went to the highest point in the area and built a small wooden shelter, barely large enough to hold his body. He always had to bend over because it was too low for him to stand upright. The boards were poorly joined, so they protected him neither from rain nor from the burning sun. After living in these harsh conditions for many years, he followed the counsel of Theodotus, the Patriarch of Antioch at the time, and came out of the shelter. But even

after coming out, he stood continually with his arms stretched toward heaven, praising God. He endured these hardships despite having a frail body afflicted by illness. Burning with divine love and fervent zeal, he compelled his body to labor beyond what it could bear. Yet, though he had reached such heights of virtue, he remained humble. In his wisdom, he knew how much harm pride does to a person. Having lived in this way, the thrice-blessed Baradatus peacefully departed to the Lord.

The ascesis, the ascetic discipline, of the holy ascetics is striking. The struggles of some of them, such as the Stylites and Saints Limnaeus and Baradatus, whom we celebrate today, seem beyond human nature. They are fearsome even to hear about. They may also discourage those who think seriously about their salvation: “They were saved through such great ascetic struggle. What will become of me, when I have done nothing like that, or cannot do it?” We could say that this concern is beneficial. It is a good concern. It spurs us to do a little more in our own ascetic struggle: to be content with less, to be less drawn to things that please the flesh, and to struggle

a little harder against the desires of the flesh. Perhaps most importantly, it helps us grow in humility, come down to earth spiritually, and stop imagining that we are someone special or that we are doing something great. This humility can make up for much of the ascetic effort we lack.
