The hieromartyr Athenogenes was from Sebaste in Cappadocia. The son of devout parents, he cherished the Christian faith as the most splendid inheritance, and the only one that is secure and everlasting. His learning, zeal, and tireless, courageous care for others earned him the esteem and respect of Christians. When he was a mature man, he was raised to the episcopal throne of Pidachthoe. As bishop, he was a lamp set on a lampstand, a fervent teacher, and a faithful, careful keeper of the Gospel’s commandments. Knowing that a bishop could not meet so many spiritual and social duties alone, he worked from the outset

to train capable helpers. He had devout and virtuous disciples whom he guided in the spiritual life. Then Diocletian’s persecution of the Church broke out, and the governor Philomachos arrested Bishop Athenogenes and his ten disciples. All of them steadfastly confessed Christ. The governor ordered their deaths, and all received the radiant crown of martyrdom through beheading. As mentioned earlier, today we also commemorate another martyr named Athenogenes, who died in the flames. According to Basil the Great, he composed the hymn sung at every Vespers:

“O Gladsome Light of the holy glory,” and so on.

The martyr Faustus lived under Decius, another savage persecutor of Christians. Amid persecution, confiscations, exile, imprisonment, and martyrdom, this bold and courageous soul came forward preaching Christ. His persecutors arrested him and sentenced him to crucifixion. He endured that dreadful punishment with remarkable fortitude. His suffering lasted five days. Then, blessing God and giving Him thanks, he gave up his spirit.

Saint Antiochus the Martyr, whom our Church also commemorates today, was from Sebaste in Cappadocia. He studied medicine and excelled in it. But, full of devotion and love for his neighbor, he did not wish to practice medicine as a way to earn his living.

Traveling through towns and villages, he taught the Christian faith and healed many who were suffering, without charge. His apostolic work also brought him an apostle’s end. After his arrest, he confessed Christ before the court. Unable to change his mind, the governor Andrianos condemned him to death by torture. He endured the tearing of his sides and the flames, and was finally beheaded. Yet even in death, he was winning souls. His executioner, Kyriakos, marveled at the courage and goodness of Antiochus amid such suffering. Enlightened by the Holy Spirit, Kyriakos also confessed Christ, washed away his sins, and received the martyr’s crown through beheading.

The saintly martyrs we celebrate today, like all the saintly martyrs and confessors—indeed, we could say all the saints—confessed the true God and His mighty works. They did so through their words or through their whole way of life, before tyrants or before the entire world and all creation. They confessed through God’s grace, and what they bore witness to was that same grace, which had worked the miracle of their sanctification. Divine grace was reflected in the saints and made visible through them. They did not bear witness to themselves, but to God. That was their worth.

That was the worth they showed the world. The saints preached Christ, confessed Him, and bore witness to Him. And Christ, as He promised, will acknowledge them before His Father in heaven. He has already acknowledged them in this life by filling them with grace and sanctifying them. But He will acknowledge them most fully at His Second Coming. Then the saints will shine like the sun in the Kingdom of God. As Saint Gregory Palamas says, they will radiate the light of Christ as children of divine light. Christ dwelling within them will bear witness that they truly belong to Him.

This will be clear from reality itself, through their communion in His grace, rather than in theory or words alone. And so they will be beloved of the Father. Those who are united with Christ have the Father’s love within them because of the Son. God rests among the saints. As one prayer of the Divine Liturgy says during the Trisagion Hymn, He is the One “who rests among the saints.” God, of course, has no fixed place. Yet, according to Saint John of Damascus, the place where His divine uncreated energies are made manifest can be called the place of God. In this sense, the Church and those who share in God’s divine uncreated energies are His dwelling place.

That is, His saints. May we too, through holy virtues and fervent metanoia—repentance—make our hearts a fitting place for God to rest. May He rest there and be revealed, be revealed and borne witness to. In this way, may we glorify Him and be glorified by Him in return, now and always.
