In AD 363, Saturninus was governor of Ancyra. Basil was a priest of the Holy Church there. He was reported to the governor for criticizing Julian’s actions against the Church and speaking strongly against pagan religion. Saturninus ordered him to renounce Christ. The faithful priest declared that his whole life belonged to the Savior and His Gospel. “You were wrong to think I would deny Christ,” he added. “Even the least of the lay faithful in my parish is ready to shed his blood for our holy faith.” Saturninus tore open his sides and threw him into prison.
The same thing happened a second time. A few days later, when Julian passed through Ancyra, they brought the Saint before him in chains. The emperor asked whether he would renounce Christ. But the Saint replied that he believed in Christ alone as the true God, his Creator and Lord. He was then handed over to Count Flaventius, who punished the martyr by stripping skin from his body. Julian next ordered metal spits to be heated red hot and used to pierce and burn the martyr’s body. As this was happening, the brave athlete of Christ surrendered his soul into God’s hands and received from Him the crown of martyrdom.
The fair and pure brides of Christ are these five holy virgin martyrs, monastics known in those days as consecrated women. They fought the good fight bravely, and the Church also commemorates them today. They lived during the reign of Trajan, who ruled from AD 98 to 117. At the end of his letter to the Philippians, the Apostle Paul sends greetings in Christ from those of Caesar’s household. This suggests that, during his first stay in Rome, members of the palace staff had come to faith in Christ. The Roman martyrology also records martyrs from the palace.
It records martyrs from among those close to the Caesars. Something similar seems to have happened under Emperor Trajan. Drosida was the emperor’s daughter and lived with him in the palace. The five consecrated virgins lived in a small community near the city, leading an ascetic life and striving to keep God’s commandments. Trajan bitterly hated and persecuted Christians who confessed Christ, putting them to death day after day. He even had their precious remains thrown into wretched, unclean places. When those devout monastics saw this, they took up another work pleasing to God:
They made it their duty to gather the sacred remains of the holy martyrs, anoint them with fragrant oils, wrap them in linen, and bury them within their own community. Blessed Drosida loved the Christians. When she heard of this work, she wanted to visit the monastics and help them. She found an opportunity to slip out of the palace unseen and went to meet them. She asked to accompany them in searching for the sacred remains of a martyr, so that they could care for them and bury them as they usually did.
And so they did. One day, while carrying out this work, both the monastics and Drosida were arrested. When the emperor saw his daughter, he was astonished and ordered that she be kept under guard in the hope that she might change her mind. The five monastics died as martyrs. Drosida left the palace and, before going to face martyrdom, wished to be cleansed through Holy Baptism. “Lord Jesus Christ,” she said, “I have left the royal life for love of You. You who were baptized for our sake, baptize me also with the Holy Spirit.” Then she took out the holy chrism she had brought from her room and anointed herself.
She baptized herself in water, saying, “The handmaid of God Drosida is baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Some Christians devoted to Christ found her and learned her story from her own lips. On the eighth day after her baptism, while she was still beseeching God and praying that He would show her what to do, she departed to the Lord, whom she loved with all her heart.
We ordinary Christians, and even more so those far from the Church, may fail to understand certain things the Saints did out of love for God, or we may misunderstand them. How could Drosida leave the palace and a royal life? How could others choose torture instead of comfort, and death instead of life?
Yet for the Saints of our Church, as for Saint Isaac the Syrian, love for Christ, the love of God, is Paradise. It is the Kingdom that the Lord promised to the Apostles. “Until we find love,” Abba Isaac continues, “we labor in a land of thorns. Among thorns we sow and reap, and they prick us even when our seed is the seed of righteousness. When we find love, we are fed with heavenly bread. That bread is Christ, who came down from heaven and gave life to the world; He is the food of angels.” Whoever lives in love receives life from God and, even now in this world, breathes the air of the Resurrection. The love of God is the wine that gladdens the human heart. Blessed is the one who has drunk this wine. The unchaste drank it and became self-controlled. Sinners drank it and left behind their sinful habits. Drunkards drank it and began to fast. The rich drank it and came to desire poverty.
The poor drank it and became rich in hope. The sick drank it and grew strong, and the foolish became wise. The love of God that the Saints possessed was more than a simple feeling. It was a gift from above, received after they had been cleansed of the passions, those disordered desires. May we too long for and receive this love of God. When we reach it, we reach God, and our journey is complete, for there is nothing beyond Him that we could desire or seek.
