The holy hieromartyr Patrick and the holy martyrs Acacius, Menander, and Polyenus were counted worthy to receive the crowns of martyrdom in Prusa, in Asia Minor, under its governor, Julian the Consul. Saint Patrick’s rare learning and ardent zeal for the faith led to his becoming bishop of Prusa. Alongside his other duties, he preached every day, defending the Gospel against the accusations of the pagans and drawing many of them to faith in Christ. He had willing companions in this apostolic work, especially Acacius, Menander, and Polyenus. They were denounced and brought before the governor, Julian the Consul,
who first tried to turn Patrick away from the faith through philosophical debate. But when he saw that Patrick answered and overturned every argument, he ordered the bishop of Christ to be thrown into the hot springs. The waters harmed the soldiers who threw the saint in, but Patrick came out unharmed. In the end, he was beheaded together with Saints Acacius, Menander, and Polyenus. Thus these blessed men received the crowns of their struggle.
Venerable Memnon, whom we celebrate today, left the world and all that belongs to it for love of God. He pleased God through obedience, submission, and a life of virtue, and became an abbot. Through his gentleness and love, he also became a worker of miracles.
Once, locusts descended on the monastery’s fields. The saint came out of the monastery and prayed, and, wondrously, they vanished, as though burned by fire or drowned in a river. Through his prayer, water also sprang up in a dry place. It continues to flow to this day, to the glory of Christ.
He appeared to sailors who called on him for help during a storm. He steered their ship and encouraged them, and soon brought them safely into a harbor. Through such miracles, this blessed man helped those who called on him in many ways. He pleased God to the end of his life and departed to Him, carrying the riches and provisions of virtue.
The holy martyr Acoluthus, also celebrated today, endured his struggle during the reign of Maximian, who ruled from AD 286 to 305. He came from the Egyptian Thebaid. True to his name, Acoluthus followed closely in the footsteps of the author and perfecter of our faith, our God Jesus Christ. He practiced the virtues of the Gospel with great care and preached the divine word to the pagans. Because of his faith and his confession of Christ, he was brought before the local governor. Neither flattery nor threats could sway him, so first they tied a heavy stone around his neck,
and then, by order of the imperial prefect, he was burned at the stake. In this way he won the crown of martyrdom.
From the Egyptian Thebaid, the Thebaid of the South, let us now turn to the Thebaid of the North. In Egypt, Anthony the Great, foremost among the monastic fathers and a model of the hermit’s life, Saint Pachomius, who received the rule for life in community from an angel, and the thousands of monks and nuns who followed them filled the desert with Christians and won heaven through an angelic way of life. There is also the Russian desert of the forested, marshy North, where no fewer thousands of monks and nuns sought their salvation. The saints of the sixteenth-century Russian Thebaid are countless. Today we will speak very briefly of
Venerable Cornelius of Komel. After enduring difficult ascetic struggles at the monastery of White Lake, he began to wander and eventually reached the forest of Komel. He was ordained a priest and lived in the forest as a hermit for nineteen years. Only when he turned sixty did he build a church and found a monastery.
It was customary for a chosen monk to spend time in a monastery, living the outward ascetic life, until he was ready to become a hermit. Then, with the blessing of his abbot or spiritual father, he would go deep into the dense forests. Just as a swimmer throws himself into the vast sea, the ascetic cast himself into the depths of danger and hardship that lay before him in the solitary life of the wilderness. This was possible only with fullness of faith and complete trust in God’s providence. There, after passing through the school of inner perfection, he would come into contact with people again. But at the first opportunity, he would struggle to return to the wilderness and live in hesychia, inner stillness. So it was with Venerable Cornelius. After building his first monastery, he left again for Lake Sura with his disciple Gennadius. Later, at the monks’ insistence, he returned to his monastery, where he cut down trees and sowed the fields,
so that they could eat bread earned by their own labor and also provide for those who had none. Like all the great saints of the Northern Thebaid, Venerable Cornelius belonged to the great tradition of Hesychasm. He taught purity, noetic prayer, self-knowledge, and the struggle against the passions. He especially stressed the two greatest commandments of the Gospel: love for God and love for one’s neighbor. Among his disciples was Venerable Gennadius of Kostroma, who carried on the monastery Cornelius had founded at Lake Sura. The Kingdom of Heaven, the Annunciation,
Gennadius was a clairvoyant wonderworker who received a revelation about the coming time of troubles for the Russian land. Another disciple was Venerable Adrian of Poshekhonye, who founded a monastery after a divine revelation and was later killed by robbers. Venerable Cornelius of Komel departed this life on May 19, 1537. Thank you.
Every day, our Church honors its saints and holds them up for us to imitate. As anyone can see, there are many kinds of saints, many ways of life, and many paths to holiness and salvation. Among them, venerable monks and nuns hold a prominent place. When monasticism in our Church is genuine and rightly lived, it is flesh of her flesh and, at least in times of peace for the Church, her highest spiritual expression. Saint Nektarios, though himself a bishop,
maintains that a monk is higher even than a hierarch. Our love for the ascetic monastic life is part of the Orthodox way of life and shows that we are living the Orthodox tradition. It is love for the very heart of Orthodoxy: its prophetic mission, its apostolic life filled with grace, and its witness unto martyrdom. That is why all the saints loved this ascetic way of life. Christians who do not love the monastic spirit, in both the broad and the strict sense, have departed from the tradition of our Church. That departure distorts who they are as Orthodox Christians and puts their salvation at risk. The presence of ascetics, even in an extreme form, is a healthy response to the spirit of secularization. Their contribution is therefore beyond price. We must honor the way of life of all our venerable fathers so that we may escape spiritual division within ourselves and take our place fully in the blessed stream of our Church’s Orthodox tradition.
